Paleomagnetism, magnetic anisotropy and U-Pb baddeleyite geochronology of the early Neoproterozoic Blekinge-Dalarna dolerite dykes, Sweden

Paleogeographic proximity of Baltica and Laurentia in the supercontinent Rodinia has been widely accepted. However, robust paleomagnetic poles are still scarce, hampering quantitative tests of proposed relative positions of the two cratons. A recent paleomagnetic study of the early Neoproterozoic Blekinge-Dalarna dolerite (BDD) dykes in Sweden provided a 946–935 Ma key pole for Baltica, but earlie

First evidence of Archean mafic dykes at 2.62 Ga in the Yilgarn Craton, Western Australia : Links to cratonisation and the Zimbabwe Craton

The Archean Yilgarn Craton in Western Australia hosts at least five generations of Proterozoic mafic dykes, the oldest previously identified dykes belonging to the ca. 2408–2401 Ma Widgiemooltha Supersuite. We report here the first known Archean mafic dyke dated at 2615 ± 6 Ma by the ID-TIMS U-Pb method on baddeleyite and at 2610 ± 25 Ma using in situ SHRIMP U-Pb dating of baddeleyite. Aeromagneti

Phylogenetic relationships, biogeography and diversification of Coenonymphina butterflies (Nymphalidae : Satyrinae): intercontinental dispersal of a southern Gondwanan group?

The origins, evolutionary history and diversification of the Australian butterfly fauna are poorly known and uncertain. Two competing hypotheses have been proposed to explain the occurrence of butterflies on this isolated continental landmass. The common view is that all Australian butterflies entered the continent relatively recently from the northern hemisphere via Southeast Asia and/or mainland

Measurement of the Higgs boson mass in the H → ZZ⁎ → 4ℓ and H → γγ channels with s=13 TeV pp collisions using the ATLAS detector

The mass of the Higgs boson is measured in the H→ZZ⁎→4ℓ and in the H→γγ decay channels with 36.1 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data from the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector in 2015 and 2016. The measured value in the H→ZZ⁎→4ℓ channel is mH ZZ⁎=124.79±0.37GeV, while the measured value in the H→γγ channel is mH γγ=124.93±0.40GeV. Combining

Feature Detection and Description using a Harris-Hessian/FREAK Combination on an Embedded GPU

GPUs in embedded platforms are reaching performance levels comparable to desktop hardware, thus it becomes interesting to apply Computer Vision techniques. We propose, implement, and evaluate a novel feature detector and descriptor combination, i.e., we combine the Harris-Hessian detector with the FREAK binary descriptor. The implementation is done in OpenCL, and we evaluate the execution time and

Processes governing the drinking water microbiome

AbstractSafe drinking water is far from sterile and can contain 10^3-10^5 bacteria/mL. This water microbiome can be altered through various treatment processes in the drinking water treatment plant (DWTP), particularity when it comes in contact with biofilms. Biofilms cover surfaces in the drinking water systems and contain diverse bacterial communities that interact with the water. In this thesis

The Organisation of Welfare Services on Quasi-Markets - a Study of Elderly Care in Sweden

This paper examines how a Scandinavian country organises elderly care as a welfare service on a quasi-market. More specifically, it deals with how public officers work with meeting citizens’ need and demand, while at the same time struggle with political decrees, changes in the political climate, as well as the whims of the market. Swedish elderly care is used as an example of how a welfare servic

Human thymopoiesis is influenced by a common genetic variant within the TCRA-TCRD locus

The thymus is the primary lymphoid organ where naïve T cells are generated; however, with the exception of age, the parameters that govern its function in healthy humans remain unknown. We characterized the variability of thymic function among 1000 age- and sex-stratified healthy adults of the Milieu Intérieur cohort, using quantification of T cell receptor excision circles (TRECs) in peripheral b

Evolution within a language : Environmental differences contribute to divergence of dialect groups

Background: The processes leading to the diversity of over 7000 present-day languages have been the subject of scholarly interest for centuries. Several factors have been suggested to contribute to the spatial segregation of speaker populations and the subsequent linguistic divergence. However, their formal testing and the quantification of their relative roles is still missing. We focussed here o

Healthy indoor environments : The need for a holistic approach

Indoor environments have a large impact on health and well-being, so it is important to understand what makes them healthy and sustainable. There is substantial knowledge on individual factors and their effects, though understanding how factors interact and what role occupants play in these interactions (both causative and receptive) is lacking. We aimed to: (i) explore interactions between factor

Rapid and efficient induction of functional astrocytes from human pluripotent stem cells

The derivation of astrocytes from human pluripotent stem cells is currently slow and inefficient. We demonstrate that overexpression of the transcription factors SOX9 and NFIB in human pluripotent stem cells rapidly and efficiently yields homogeneous populations of induced astrocytes. In our study these cells exhibited molecular and functional properties resembling those of adult human astrocytes

Secondary ice production by fragmentation of freezing drops : Formulation and theory

A numerical formulation is provided for secondary ice production during fragmentation of freezing raindrops or drizzle. This is obtained by pooling laboratory observations from published studies and considering the physics of collisions. There are two modes of the scheme: fragmentation during spherical drop freezing (mode 1) and during collisions of supercooled raindrops with more massive ice (mod

The ca. 2785–2805 Ma high temperature ilivertalik intrusive complex of southern west Greenland

Ferroan granitoid intrusions are rare in the Archaean rock record, but have played a large role in the evolution of the Proterozoic crust, particular in relation to anorthosite-mangerite-charnockite-granite suites. Here we discuss the petrogenesis of the ca. 2785–2805 Ma ferroan Ilivertalik Intrusive Complex, which has many geochemical similarities to Proterozoic iron rich granitoids. We present m

High Serum Serotonin Predicts Increased Risk for Hip Fracture and Nonvertebral Osteoporotic Fractures : The MrOS Sweden Study

Because several studies have implicated serotonin as a regulator of bone mass, we here explore its potential association on fracture risk and falls, as on bone mineral density (BMD) and muscle strength, in humans. Serum levels of serotonin were analyzed in 950 men (aged 69 to 81 years), participating in the Gothenburg part of the population-based study MrOS Sweden. Men taking selective serotonin r

Traumatic shaking : The role of the triad in medical investigations of suspected traumatic shaking

The Swedish Agency for Health Technology Assessment and Assesment of Social Services (SBU) is an independent national authority, tasked by the government with assessing methods used in health, medical and dental services and social service interventions from a broad perspective, covering medical, economic, ethical and social aspects. The language in SBU's reports are adjusted to a wide audience. S
