Sensor Fusion for Compliant Robot Motion Control

Force feedback control is necessary for accurate force control in robotic manipulators and, thus far, wrist force/torque (F/T) sensors have been used. An important problem arises when only these types of sensors are used. In a dynamic situation where the manipulator moves in either free or constrained space, the interaction forces and moments at the contact point and also the non-contact ones are

Immunostaining for p16(INK4a) used as a conjunctive tool improves interobserver agreement of the histologic diagnosis of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia

The quality of cervical histopathology is critical to cervical cancer prevention, cancer treatment, and research programs. On the basis of the histology results further patient management is determined. However, the diagnostic interpretation of histologic hematoxylin-eosin (H&E)-stained slides is affected by substantial rates of discordance among pathologists. Overexpression of the cyclin-depe

Vincristine pharmacokinetics is related to clinical outcome in children with standard risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia

Vincristine is a key drug in the treatment of childhood and adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), and many other childhood malignancies. Despite decades of wide clinical use, no data on the correlation between vincristine pharmacokinetics and long-term clinical outcome have been published. We here report clinical data (median follow-up time 10.5 years, range 7.3-12 years) for 86 children with

Effects of common polymorphisms in the alpha(1A)-, alpha(2B)-, beta(1)- and beta(2)-adrenoreceptors on haemodynamic responses to adrenaline

Common naturally occurring polymorphisms have been identified in the coding regions of the alpha(1A)-, alpha(2B)-, beta(1)- and beta(2)-adrenoceptor (AR) genes [alpha(1A)-AR R492C, alpha(2B)-AR insertion/deletion (I/D), beta(1)-AR R389G, beta(2)-AR G16R and beta(2)-AR Q27E] and are associated with modified in vivo and in vitro functionality. We tested their possible effects on the haemodynamic res

'Family money' and 'business money': bankrupt entrepreneurs in a ‘question situation’

This paper addresses the question of bankruptcy and honesty in local contexts, and especially the problem of the bankrupt small businessman in conveying ‘honesty’ to the local community. Studying bankrupt entrepreneurs, the analysis explores a tacit dialogue between the failed businessmen and the small town communities where they live and work. The bankrupts respond to their seemingly mistrustful

A role for PKC-epsilon in Fc gamma R-mediated phagocytosis by RAW 264.7 cells

Protein kinase C (PKC) plays a prominent role in immune signaling, and the paradigms for isoform selective signaling are beginning to be elucidated. Real-time microscopy was combined with molecular and biochemical approaches to demonstrate a role for PKC-epsilon in Fcgamma receptor (FcgammaR)-dependent phagocytosis. RAW 264.7 macrophages were transfected with GFP-conjugated PKC isoforms, and GFP m

Effects on osteoclast and osteoblast activities in cultured mouse calvarial bones by synovial fluids from patients with a loose joint prosthesis and from osteoarthritis patients

Aseptic loosening of a joint prosthesis is associated with remodelling of bone tissue in the vicinity of the prosthesis. In the present study, we investigated the effects of synovial fluid ( SF) from patients with a loose prosthetic component and periprosthetic osteolysis on osteoclast and osteoblast activities in vitro and made comparisons with the effects of SF from patients with osteoarthritis

Self propagating high temperature synthesis of magnesium zinc ferrites (MgxZn1-xFe2O3): thermal imaging and time resolved X-ray diffraction experiments

Spinel ferrites of the form MgxZn1-xFe2O4 ( x = 0. 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.00) were prepared by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) from reactions of iron(III), zinc and magnesium oxides, iron powder and sodium perchlorate. The driving force for the reactions is the oxidation of iron powder. Reactions were carried out in the presence of an external magnetic field of 0.2 or 1.1 T. Reactio

Study of a confined turbulent jet: Influence of combustion and pressure

Today, environmental issues play an important role in the viability of modern low-emission power plants. As a consequence, gas turbine combustors need to be operated at lean premixed conditions. However, successful designs require a detailed knowledge of the combustion process under realistic operating conditions. The present study focuses on nonreacting and reacting jets at operating pressures fr

Evidence of tendon microtears due to cyclical loading in an in vivo tendinopathy model

Tendon injuries at the epicondyle can occur in athletes and workers whose job functions involve repetitive, high force hand activities, but the early pathophysiologic changes of tendon are not well known. The purpose of this study was to evaluate early tendon structural changes, specifically the formation of microtears, caused by cyclical loading. The Flexor Digitorum Profundus (FDP) muscle of nin

Decreasing levels of tumour necrosis factor alpha and interleukin 6 during lowering of body mass index with orlistat or placebo in obese subjects with cardiovascular risk factors.

Aim: Obesity is associated with increased levels of inflammatory mediators. The objective of this study was to evaluate changes in the leucocyte derived inflammatory mediators tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin 6 (IL-6) and the isoprostane 8-epi-prostaglandin (PG) F2alpha during BMI lowering with orlistat (Xenical®, Roche) or placebo. Methods: TNF-alpha, IL-6, and 8-epi PGF2alp

Extragastric Helicobacter species

The genus Helicobacter has expanded at a rapid pace and no fewer than 31 species have been named since the proposal of the genus in 1989. Of these 31 species, 22 are principally associated with extragastric niches and there is increasing interest in the role of these taxa in diseases of humans and animals. Substantial evidence attests to certain species playing a role in the pathogenesis of enteri

Compaction of agglomerates of aerosol nanoparticles: A compilation of experimental data

The compacting behavior of agglomerated aerosol nanoparticles in the size range between 7 and 150 nm was investigated using available literature data. We observed a characteristic behavior, which can be described by three separate steps. When comparing the first step, the compaction from agglomerates into spherules, differences could be observed for nanoparticles of different materials. It is seen

Method for determination of methane potentials of solid organic waste

A laboratory procedure is described for measuring methane potentials of organic solid waste. Triplicate reactors with 10 grams of volatile solids were incubated at 55 degreesC with 400 ml of inoculum from a thermophilic biogas plant and the methane production was followed over a 50-day period by regular measurements of methane on a gas chromatograph. The procedure involves blanks as well as cellul
