A laboratory procedure is described for measuring methane potentials of organic solid waste. Triplicate reactors with 10 grams of volatile solids were incubated at 55 degreesC with 400 ml of inoculum from a thermophilic biogas plant and the methane production was followed over a 50-day period by regular measurements of methane on a gas chromatograph. The procedure involves blanks as well as cellul
Pressurized Liquid Extraction was utilized for the extraction of seven selected polychlorinated biphenyls (28, 52, 101, 118, 153, and 180) from a naturally contaminated fishmeal and two feed samples fortified with a naturally contaminated fish oil sample. In order to assure sufficient extraction efficiencies, the extraction solvent, the extraction temperature, and the flush volume were optimised b
Department of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Institute of Laboratory Medicine, Lund University Hospital, S-221 85 Lund, Sweden. The aim of this study was to investigate if the uptake of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), a widely used industrial chemical, increases after exposure to NMP in humid air compared to dry air. NMP has been described to be an airway irritant and a developmentally to
Studies of language in children with mild-to-moderate hearing impairment ( HI) indicate that they often have problems in phonological shortterm memory (PSTM) and that they have linguistic weaknesses both in vocabulary and morphosyntax similar to children with specific language impairment (SLI). However, children with HI may be more likely than children with SLI to acquire typical language skills a
This paper approaches the uncertainty problem from the point of view of adaptive control. The uncertainty is reduced by continuous monitoring of the response of the system to the control actions and appropriate modifications of the control law. It is shown that this approach makes it possible to deal with uncertainties that cannot be handled by high gain robust feedback control.
Ofta går också döden hand i hand med en kärlekThis thesis addresses the work of the Swedish author, Torgny Lindgren (born 1938). Its main focus lies on the all-pervading irony in his work. The use of irony is seen as a unifying trait in Lindgren’s authorship. The development of more complex ironies during the years of his authorship is seen as an effect of his authorship’s thematic development, moving from political satire to existential, eth
This paper presents a post processing strategy for myocardial velocity fields obtained by phase contrast magnetic resonance imaging. Such data can be used to track cardiac motion and to calculate strain. The method combines data regularization with optical flow estimation to overcome the partial volume effect in the image acquisition. Validation is performed both in vitro and in vivo and it is sho
Planar gamma-scintigraphy is often used to quantify pulmonary deposition patterns from aerosol inhalers. The results are quite different from those obtained using 3-dimensional PET and SPECT. The purpose of this study was to characterize the effects of scatter and tissue attenuation on the distribution of radiolabeled aerosol as measured by planar scintigraphy using Monte Carlo simulations. This s
A series of Ti-doped diopside samples synthesized by fluxgrowth methods under reducing conditions were investigated by microanalytical methods and optical absorption spectroscopy, to assess Ti incorporation mechanisms, valence states, and related electronic transitions. Chemical characterization show that Ti occurs both in the tri-and tetravalent states, with Ti4+ preferentially ordered to the tet
The association between humoral immunity to unique and conserved epitopes of the Chlamydia trachomatis 60-kDa heat-shock protein (hsp60) and immunity to human hsp60 was examined in 129 women with laparoscopically verified pelvic inflammatory disease. An ELISA was used to detect antichlamydial IgG and IgA antibodies, IgG antibodies to recombinant human hsp60, and antibodies to two synthetic peptide
A theorem on duality between cost functions and density functions in optimal control is derived using the Hahn-Banach theorem. The result puts focus on convexity aspects in control synthesis and the theory of almost global stability. In particular, it gives a new proof that existence of a density function is both necessary and sufficient for almost global stability in a nonlinear system.
List-sequence (LS) decoding has the potential to yield significant coding gain additional to that of conventional single-sequence decoding, and it can be implemented with full backward compatibility in systems where an error-detecting code is concatenated with an error-correcting code. LS maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding provides a list of estimated sequences in likelihood order. For convolutional
