The Gaia -ESO Survey : Exploring the complex nature and origins of the Galactic bulge populations

Context. As observational evidence steadily accumulates, the nature of the Galactic bulge has proven to be rather complex: the structural, kinematic, and chemical analyses often lead to contradictory conclusions. The nature of the metal-rich bulge - and especially of the metal-poor bulge - and their relation with other Galactic components, still need to be firmly defined on the basis of statistica

Maximally restrictive leptonic texture zeros in two-Higgs-doublet models

The implementation of maximally restrictive texture zeros in the leptonic sector is investigated in the context of two-Higgs-doublet models with Majorana neutrinos. After analyzing all maximally restrictive pairs of leptonic mass matrices with zero entries, we conclude that there are only four texture combinations that are compatible with observations at 3σ confidence level and can be implemented

High-precision mass measurements for the isobaric multiplet mass equation at A = 52

Masses of 52Co, 52Com, 52Fe, 52Fem, and 52Mn have been measured with the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap mass spectrometer. The isobaric multiplet mass equation for the T = 2 quintet at A = 52 has been studied employing the new mass values. No significant breakdown (beyond the level) of the quadratic form of the IMME was observed (). The cubic coefficient was 6.0(32) keV (). The excitation energies f

A new quantitative X-ray system for micro-PIXE analysis

Particle Induced X-ray Emission is a well-established technique for quantitative elemental analysis down to trace levels. During microbeam analysis, where the beam is collimated and focused into a small spot, the beam current reduces to nA or less. The generation of characteristic X-rays is reduced in the same proportion, leading to long data-acquisition times. This can partly be compensated for b

Comparison of reproductive investment in native and non-native populations of common wall lizards reveals sex differences in adaptive potential

Non-native animals can encounter very different environments than those they are adapted to. Functional changes in morphology, physiology and life-history following introduction show that organisms can adapt both fast and efficiently. It remains unclear, however, if female reproductive characters and male sexually selected behaviour show the same adaptive potential. Furthermore, the invasion succe

Attosecond dynamics of light-induced resonant hole transfer in high-order-harmonic generation

We present a study of high-order-harmonic generation (HHG) assisted by extreme ultraviolet (XUV) attosecond pulses, which can lead to the excitation of inner-shell electrons and the generation of a second HHG plateau. With the treatment of a one-dimensional model of krypton, based on time-dependent configuration interaction singles (TDCIS) of an effective two-electron system, we show that the XUV-

Attosecond photoionization dynamics with stimulated core-valence transitions

We investigate ionization of neon atoms by an isolated attosecond pump pulse in the presence of two coherentextreme ultraviolet or x-ray probe fields. The probe fields are tuned to a core-valence transition in the residual ionand induce spectral shearing of the photoelectron distributions. We show that the photoelectron-ion coincidencesignal contains an interference pattern that depends on the tem

A method for assessment of exposure to rubber glove allergens

Background: Use of disposable protective gloves in health care is necessary both to protect patients and personnel. However, the use might also be responsible for skin disease among persons wearing the gloves. Dermatitis may be caused by additives in the gloves, either from manufacturing of the glove material or components in coatings applied after vulcanization. Objectives: We wanted to analyse t

Hand eczema in healthcare workers : a questionnaire survey of risk factors and work-related exposures

Recent data on the prevalence and causes of hand eczema among healthcare workers in Sweden are lacking. Multidrug-resistant bacteria have necessitated improved hand hygiene and preventive measures. This has led to an increase in the use of disposable rubber gloves and hand disinfectants, which might influence the risk of hand eczema. Our aims were to identify healthcare workers with hand eczema; t

Factors influencing the skin exposure to diphenylguanidine in surgical gloves

Background: For health care personnelhandhygieneandwearing appropriate protective gloves are compulsory. We have noticed an increase of hand eczema caused by contact allergy from rubber chemicals such as diphenylguanidine (DPG) in synthetic rubber gloves used by surgeons and surgical nurses. The exposure time to surgical gloves as well as the number of gloves used per day vary. Furthermore surgery

Penetration of aluminium salts through pig skin in vitro

Background: Recently it was suggested to use aluminium chloride hexahydrate in petrolatum at 10% to detect aluminium contact allergy. Patch testing with aluminium chloride hexahydrate at 20% did not demonstrate a higher number of positive test reactions. It was speculated that the constricting effect of aluminium salts might impair skin penetration. Objectives: The purpose of the present study is

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis to gloves, follow-up of investigated patients

Background: In the Department of Occupational and Environmental Dermatology there has been an increase in the inflow of patients, working as surgical nurses or surgeons. They have been referred due to presumed occupational contact dermatitis. Results from investigated patients have in part been presented previously, where the investigation has shownmultiple contact allergies caused by their occupa

Enteral Pancreatic-like Enzymes of Microbial Origin affect Insulin Release during an Intravenous Glucose Tolerance Test

We have previously shown that the presence of pancreatic enzymes in the gut lumen of exocrine pancreatic insufficient pigs influences blood glucose and insulin levels during an intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT). The present study aims to highlight the effects of orally applied pancreatic-like enzymes on blood glucose and plasma insulin levels during an IVGTT in young intact pigs. Five, 7-
