Choice Blindness: The Incongruence of Intention, Action and Introspection

This thesis is an empirical and theoretical exploration of the surprising finding that people often may fail to notice dramatic mismatches between what they want and what they get, a phenomenon my collaborators and I have named choice blindness. The thesis consists of four co-authored papers, dealing with different aspects of the phenomenon. Paper one presents an initial set of studies using a co

The usefulness of cytogenetic biomarkers as intermediate endpoints in carcinogenesis

During the last decades, cytogenetic biomarkers in peripheral lymphocytes have been used to assess exposure to carcinogenic or mutagenic agents in occupational settings. The first method in use assessed chromosomal aberrations (CA). It is generally accepted that chromosomal mutations are causal events in the development of neoplasia, and it has earlier been postulated, but not proven, that increas

Multiscaling analysis and random cascade modeling of dye infiltration

[1] We aimed at investigating whether the spatial variability of infiltration in field soils, as visualized through dye infiltration experiments, is characterized by a multiscaling behavior. Digitized high-resolution dye images from three sites in an experimental catchment in Tunisia were analyzed using three indicators of scaling: empirical probability distribution functions, power spectra, and r

Neuroendocrine differentiation in prostate cancer: Implications for new treatment modalities

Objectives: This review aims to provide practising clinicians with the most recent knowledge of the biological nature of prostate cancer (PC) to facilitate investigation of new treatment modalities for patients with PC, especially the hormone-refractory state of the disease. Methods: Review of the literature using PubMed search and scientific journal publications. Results: Much progress has been m

Extended X-Ray-Absorption Fine-Structure Spectroscopic Study of Acetone Solutions of Zinc and Lead(Ii) Ethylxanthate

EXAFS and vibrational spectra of acetone solutions of zinc and lead(II) ethylxanthate have been recorded in order to correlate structural data with absorption bands in the mid-infrared region. Two ethylxanthate ions are monodentately coordinated to both zinc and lead(II) in acetone solution. Two acetone molecules are weakly coordinated to zinc to complete a tetrahedral configuration round zinc, wh

Forskningen k

Uncertainty and Risk Analysis in Fire Safety Engineering

Standard QRA-metoden förutsätter att en Two Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA) methods are presented which can be used to quantify the risk to occupants in, for example, a building in which a fire has broken out. The extended QRA considers the inherent uncertainty in the variables explicitly. The standard QRA does not consider the uncertainties in the variables and must be complemented by a sensitivity analysis or an uncertainty analysis.

The ABO blood group gene: a locus of considerable genetic diversity

The blood group ABO gene shows considerable polymorphism in most of the 7 exons. Introns examined so far have also shown blood group-related polymorphisms, as has an upstream enhancer region. Several polymorphisms affect the specificity of the gene product (glycosyltransferase) and explain the occurrence of blood group A and B. Various lethal mutations result in blood group O. Other mutations are

Modeling the increase of nodularin content in Baltic Sea Nodularia spumigena during stationary phase in phosphorus-limited batch cultures

Nodularin (Nod), produced by the brackish/marine cyanobacterium Nodularia spumigena, is a potent hepatotoxin, tumor promoter and is possibly carcinogenic to mammals. It is structurally and toxicologically related to the microcystins, produced by Microcystis aeruginosa in fresh water. A better understanding of the kinetics of Nod production might provide an insight into the physiological and ecolog

Synthesis of Nb-doped SrTiO3 by a modified glycine-nitrate process

The objective of the present investigation was to develop a technique to synthesize submicronic particles of Nb-doped strontium titanate with a homogeneous composition. This was achieved by a modified glycine-nitrate process, using Ti-lactate, Nb-oxalate, and Sr(NO3)(2) as starting materials. A combination of both citric acid and glycine was needed in order to integrate the useful features of both

Essays on Interest Groups and Trade Policy

This thesis explores the relationship between domestic political processes and interindustry variations in unilateral and multilateral trade policies. The literature on endogenous protection is extended to account for the potential importance of information flows, to explore the consequences of adapting the analyses to political systems which differ from the American kind, and to build a framework

Magnetism in artificial lattices

We compare magnetism in two artificial lattice structures, a quantum dot array formed in a two-dimensional electron gas and an optical lattice loaded with repulsive, contact-interacting fermionic atoms. When the tunneling between the lattice sites is strong, both lattices are non-magnetic. With reduced tunneling in the tight-binding limit, the shell-filling of the single-site quantum wells combine

Recognition is a concept with long standing in discourses on diplomacy, international relations, and international law. Recognition is a prerequisite for reciprocal exchanges in international relations. The principles of diplomatic recognition have, however, varied considerably throughout history, between the two poles highly inclusive and highly exclusive. Paradoxically, the European Union figure

Serum Levels of 2,2,4,4,5,5 -Hexachlorobiphenyl (CB-153) in Relation to Markers of Reproductive Function in Young Males from the General Swedish Population.

A time-related deterioration in male reproductive function caused by exposure to endocrine disrupters, including persistent organochlorines (POCs), has been hypothesized. In animal studies, POCs were found to have adverse effects on male reproductive function. However, little is known about the impact of POC exposure on reproductive parameters in men. In a study of 305 young Swedish men 18-21 year

A norbislabdane and other labdanes from Aframomum sulcatum

Extracts of the seeds of Aframomum sulcatum (Oliv. & Hanb) K. Schum (Zingiberaceae) yielded a novel norbislabdane derivative, sulcanal (1) and the new labdane (12E)-8beta,17-epoxy-11-hydroxy-12-labden-15.16-dial-11,15-hemiacetal (2) (as a 1:1 C-15 epimeric mixture), along with known labdane diterpenes.

MULTISCAN--a Scandinavian multicenter second trimester obstetric ultrasound and serum screening study

AIM: To study the detection rates of second trimester ultrasound screening for neural tube defects (NTD), abdominal wall defects (AWD) and Down's syndrome (DS) in low risk populations at tertiary centers, and to compare the ultrasound screening detection rates with those that were obtainable by biochemical serum screening (double test: alpha-fetoprotein/human chorion gonadotrophin/age test).
