Conserved ancestral tropical niche but different continental histories explain the latitudinal diversity gradient in brush-footed butterflies

The global increase in species richness toward the tropics across continents and taxonomic groups, referred to as the latitudinal diversity gradient, stimulated the formulation of many hypotheses to explain the underlying mechanisms of this pattern. We evaluate several of these hypotheses to explain spatial diversity patterns in a butterfly family, the Nymphalidae, by assessing the contributions o

Integrating bio-oil production from wood fuels to an existing heat and power plant - evaluation of energy and greenhouse gas performance in a Swedish case study

Combined heat and power (CHP) production in combination with a district heating (DH) grid gives an energy-efficient use of wood fuels. The heat demand in the DH grid will, however, decline in the coming decades, and operators are seeking additional heat sinks. In this case study, the integration of a pyrolysis unit into an existing CHP plant was investigated as a possible solution. The retrofitted

Towards a conceptual framework for built infrastructure design in an uncertain climate : Challenges and research needs

The potential risks of climate change on the built environment involve large uncertain-ties. This poses an intricate problem to designers and challenges a long-standing tradition of built infrastructure design. More specifically, designers are faced with this challenging question: how to rationally account for climate change risks when designing a new asset? A framework that holistically addresses

The bacterial amyloids phenol soluble modulins from staphylococcus aureus catalyze alpha-synuclein aggregation

Aggregated α-synuclein (α-syn) is the main constituent of Lewy bodies, which are a pathological hallmark of Parkinson’s disease (PD). Environmental factors are thought to be potential triggers capable of initiating the aggregation of the otherwise monomeric α-syn. Braak’s seminal work redirected attention to the intestine and recent reports of dysbiosis have highlighted the potential causative rol

Modeling Multi-Frequency Characteristics for Classroom and Hall Scenarios at 2-4, 9-11 and 27-29 GHz Bands

This paper investigates the wideband channel characteristics obtained in a classroom and a hall indoor scenarios at 2-4, 9-11 and 27-29GHz. A virtual uniform circular array (UCA) based channel sounding system was utilized to capture wideband spatial channel characteristics. The propagation parameters of multipath components (MPCs) were estimated by using a high resolution parameter estimation (HRP

Hough-transform-based cluster identification and modeling for V2V channels based on measurements

In this paper, a recently conducted measurement campaign for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) propagation channel characterization is introduced. Two vehicles carrying a transmitter and a receiver, respectively, have been driven along an eight-lane road with heavy traffic. The measurement was conducted with 100 MHz signal bandwidth at a carrier frequency of 5.9 GHz. Channels are observed consisting of two

ControlSystems.jl: A Control Toolbox in Julia

ControlSystems.jl enables the powerful features of the Julia language to be leveraged for control design and analysis. The toolbox provides types for state-space, transfer-function, and time-delay models, together with algorithms for design and analysis.Julia's mathematically-oriented syntax is convenient for implementing control algorithms, and its just-in-time compilation gives performance on par

The prevalence and clinical relevance of hyperhomocysteinemia suggesting vitamin B12 deficiency in presumed healthy infants

Background: Previous studies have demonstrated a high prevalence of biochemical vitamin B12 deficiency in infants in Norway. Increased total homocysteine (tHcy) is the most important marker of B12 deficiency in infants. There is a need to evaluate its clinical relevance. Aims: To investigate the prevalence of hyperhomocysteinemia (S-tHcy > 8 μmol/L) suggestive of suboptimal B12 status and the prev

Advanced Bladder Cancer. Aspects of Diagnosis and Treatment.

Treatment of bladder cancer has seen few advancements in recent decades until the introduction of checkpoint inhibitors during the last few years. Bladder cancer diagnostics have been similarly impaired and the likely advent of novel treatments in the neoadjuvant setting will require new diagnostic tools in the preoperative setting in muscleinvasive bladder cancer. This thesis evaluates three diagn

Non-corticosteroid adjuvant therapies for acute bacterial meningitis

Background: Acute bacterial meningitis is a bacterial infection of the membranes that surround and protect the brain, known as the meninges. The primary therapy for bacterial meningitis is antibiotics and corticosteroids. Although these therapies significantly improve outcomes, bacterial meningitis still has a high risk of death and a high risk of neurological sequelae in survivors. New adjuvant t

Online Copyright Infringement and Enforcement in Sweden

Should the use of DRM systems to protect lawful consumption of digital works remain absolute in scope? : TILTing perspectives 2017 Regulating a connected world, 17-19 May 2017, Tilburg, Netherlands

From a strict technological perspective copyright holders can today truly enforce their rights ex ante by creating closed environments in which the consumption of digital works is strictly controlled by DRM systems. The scope of such control is however usually attributable to a given business model rather than legal compliance because the copyright framework (and particularly Art. 6 InfoSoc Direct

Perceived Stress, Psychological Resources and Salivary Cortisol

The aim of this chapter was to analyze associations between measures of cortisol in saliva withmeasures of perceived stress, using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and of psychological resources interms of mastery, locus of control, self-esteem and sense of coherence. Only studies on healthy individualswere included and cortisol measures were grouped into single time point measures, deviation mea

Combined presentation and immunogenicity analysis reveals a recurrent RAS.Q61K neoantigen in melanoma

Neoantigens are now recognized drivers of the antitumor immune response. Recurrent neoantigens, shared among groups of patients, have thus become increasingly coveted therapeutic targets. Here, we report on the data-driven identification of a robustly presented, immunogenic neoantigen that is derived from the combination of HLA-A*01:01 and RAS.Q61K. Analysis of large patient cohorts indicated that

Modeling Metastatic Colonization in a Decellularized Organ Scaffold-Based Perfusion Bioreactor

Metastatic cancer spread is responsible for most cancer-related deaths. To colonize a new organ, invading cells adapt to, and remodel, the local extracellular matrix (ECM), a network of proteins and proteoglycans underpinning all tissues, and a critical regulator of homeostasis and disease. However, there is a major lack in tools to study cancer cell behavior within native 3D ECM. Here, an in-hous

TGF-β-mediated epithelial–mesenchymal transition and tumor-promoting effects in CMT64 cells are reflected in the transcriptomic signature of human lung adenocarcinoma

Epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a cellular process during which epithelial cells acquire mesenchymal phenotypes. Cancer cells undergo EMT to acquire malignant features and TGF-β is a key regulator of EMT. Here, we demonstrate for the first time that TGF-β could elicit EMT in a mouse lung adenocarcinoma cell line. TGF-β signaling activation led to cell morphological changes corresponding
