Modeling Pan-Arctic Peatland Carbon Dynamics Under Alternative Warming Scenarios

Peatlands store large amounts of carbon in terrestrial ecosystems and they are vulnerable to recent warming. The ongoing warming may change their carbon sink capacity and could reduce their potential to sequester carbon. In this study, we simulated peatland carbon dynamics in distinct future climate conditions using the peatland-vegetation model (LPJ-GUESS). The study examined whether less pronoun

Spatially and temporally resolved laser/optical diagnostics of combustion processes : From fundamentals to practical applications

Laser diagnostic techniques have for more than five decades been used for gaining a deepened understanding of various combustion processes. The main reason for this is the possibility of non-intrusive measurements of key combustion parameters, e.g. species concentrations, temperatures and velocities, with high spatial and temporal resolution. The present paper will describe some development of the

Sensitivity of Diffusion MRI to White Matter Pathology : Influence of Diffusion Protocol, Magnetic Field Strength, and Processing Pipeline in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

There are many ways to acquire and process diffusion MRI (dMRI) data for group studies, but it is unknown which maximizes the sensitivity to white matter (WM) pathology. Inspired by this question, we analyzed data acquired for diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) at 3T (3T-DTI and 3T-DKI) and DTI at 7T in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and healthy c

Resonant Frequency Ultrasonic P-Waves for Evaluating Uniaxial Compressive Strength of the Stabilized Slag–Cement Sediments

Material omfattar 194 prov

Cosmology from Strong Interactions

A wealth of theoretical and phenomenological information about Quantum Chromodynamics at short and long distances collected so far in major collider measurements has profound implications in cosmology. In this review, we give a brief discussion of major implications of strongly-coupled dynamics of quarks and gluons and effects of their collective motion in physics of early Universe and in astrophy

Extreme variation in recombination rate and genetic diversity along the Sylvioidea neo-sex chromosome

Recombination strongly impacts sequence evolution by affecting the extent of linkage and the efficiency of selection. Here, we study recombination over the Z chromosome in great reed warblers (Acrocephalus arundinaceus) using pedigree-based linkage mapping. This species has extended Z and W chromosomes (“neo-sex chromosomes”) formed by a fusion between a part of chromosome 4A and the ancestral sex

Revisiting radial distortion absolute pose

To model radial distortion there are two main approaches; either the image points are undistorted such that they correspond to pinhole projections, or the pinhole projections are distorted such that they align with the image measurements. Depending on the application, either of the two approaches can be more suitable. For example, distortion models are commonly used in Structure-from-Motion since

Incorporation of Magnesium into GaN Regulated by Intentionally Large Amounts of Hydrogen during Growth by MOCVD

Herein, metal–organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) of GaN layers doped with Mg atoms to the recognized optimum level of [Mg] ≈2 × 1019 cm−3 is performed. In a sequence of MOCVD runs, operational conditions, including temperature and flow rate of precursors, are maintained except for intentionally larger flows of hydrogen carrier gas fed into the reactor. By employing the largest hydrogen flow

A full-range moisture sorption model for cellulose-based materials yielding consistent net isosteric heat of sorption

A structured approach to derive the water activity function of cellulose-based materials which describe the sorption behavior from dry fiber up to the fiber saturation point is proposed. The coupling between the sorption isotherm and the net isosteric heat of sorption is incorporated in a consistent way, which allows for coupled heat-diffusion problems to be solved. Three different models are deri

Bees increase seed set of wild plants while the proportion of arable land has a variable effect on pollination in European agricultural landscapes

Background and aims – Agricultural intensification and loss of farmland heterogeneity have contributed to population declines of wild bees and other pollinators, which may have caused subsequent declines in insect-pollinated wild plants. Material and methods – Using data from 37 studies on 22 pollinator-dependent wild plant species across Europe, we investigated whether flower visitation and seed

Polarimetric relative pose estimation

In this paper we consider the problem of relative pose estimation from two images with per-pixel polarimetric information. Using these additional measurements we derive a simple minimal solver for the essential matrix which only requires two point correspondences. The polarization constraints allow us to pointwise recover the 3D surface normal up to a two-fold ambiguity for the diffuse reflection.

Taking flight to Utopian practice

In this chapter I study the ways in which people in intentional communities during the late 1970s related to geographies of escape, politics and engagement. The individuals taking part in the back-to-the-land communes of the 1960s and 1970s were seen as escapists by many in their time. They left the city and, therefore, were presumed to have left the political and societal spheres. Studies of comm

The Fertile Desert : A History of the Middle Euphrates Valley until the Arrival of Alexander

The Fertile Desert studies a region of the Euphrates Valley between the Balikh and Khabour in Syria that remains little known. Partial reports, isolated interventions, and proposals for a hypothetical reconstruction of the relationship and processes of cultural expansion between Mesopotamia and the Jazira suggest that the Euphrates has always been a major traffic route. But suggestions on a map mu

A novel X-ray diffraction approach to assess the crystallinity of regenerated cellulose fibers

Here, a new accurate approach is presented to quantify the degree of crystallinity of regenerated cellulose textile fibers using wide-angle X-ray scattering. The approach is based on the observation that the contributions to the scattering from crystalline and amorphous domains of the fibers can be separated due to their different degree of orientation with respect to the fiber direction. The meth

Psychometric properties of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in wrist osteoarthritis : test–retest reliability and construct validity

Background: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are frequently used to assess the effects of treatments in patients with wrist osteoarthritis (OA), but their psychometric properties have not been evaluated in this group of patients. Our aim was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS pain at rest, pain on motion without load, and pain on load), the Disabiliti

Effect of Mg2+ions on energy generation by Reverse Electrodialysis

Reverse Electrodialysis is today recognized as one of the most promising technology to harvest Salinity Gradient Power (SGP-RE). However, the effectiveness of SGP-RE in real practice is still not clearly defined due to the lack of specific studies in literature, being in large part limited to investigations on pure NaCl solutions. In this work we experimentally investigated the effect of Mg2+, the
