Depression and antidepressants: a Nordic perspective

The Nordic countries are all established welfare states, and there has for some time existed a notion of a distinctive Nordic or Scandinavian welfare state. Considerable differences seem to exist between for example the psychiatric services within, as well as between, the Nordic countries when it comes to history, mental health acts and allocation of resources. Some argue that it is not even possi

Inclusion of a single-tail amino acid-based amphiphile in a lipoplex formulation: Effects on transfection efficiency and physicochemical properties

Effects of the addition of a cationic amino acid-based synthetic amphiphile, arginine N-lauroyl amide dihydrochloride (ALA), to a lipid-based transfection formulation have been investigated. It is shown that the inclusion of ALA results in a substantial enhancement of the transfection capability of lipoplexes prepared with liposomes of 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-ethylphosphocholine and chol

A Scientific Revolution that Made Life Longer. Schooling and the Decline of Infant Mortality in Europe

This paper addresses the decline in infant mortality that occurred with a remarkable synchronization across Europe around the turn of the century 1900. It is the argument of this paper that this development is not just, as in the conventional view, the side effect of economic growth but could be derived through a cumulative chain of events, starting with the discovery of the germ theory. Mokyr has

A consistent modelling methodology for secondary settling tanks in wastewater treatment

The aim of this contribution is partly to build consensus on a consistent modelling methodology (CMM) of complex real processes in wastewater treatment by combining classical concepts with results from applied mathematics, and partly to apply it to the clarification-thickening process in the secondary settling tank. In the CMM, the real process should be approximated by a mathematical model (proce

Using a molten organic conducting material to infiltrate a nanoporous semiconductor film and its use in solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells

We describe a method to fill thin films of nanoporous TiO2 with solid organic hole-conducting materials and demonstrate the procedure specifically for use in the preparation of dye-sensitized solar cells. Cross-sections of the films were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and it was observed that a hot molten organic material fills pores that are 10 mu m below the surface of the film. We

The chemical composition of native organic matter influences the response of bacterial community to input of biochar and fresh plant material

Aim To investigate how the chemical composition of native organic matter of two contrasting soils varies with inputs of biochar and fresh material (including plant roots) and how these underlying changes influence microbial community structure. Methods Corn stover (CS) and CS-derived biochars produced at 350 °C and 550 °C were applied at a dose of 7.2 t C ha−1 to two contrasting soils—an Alfis

Population based study of prognostic factors and treatment in adult Burkitt lymphoma: a Swedish Lymphoma Registry study.

Burkitt lymphoma (BL) is a rare neoplasm constituting 1-2% of adult lymphomas. Our aims in this study were to establish prognostic factors for overall survival in adult BL and evaluate the efficacy of different chemotherapy regimens in a population based setting. The study population was collected from the Swedish Lymphoma Registry 2000-2010. During this period, 156 adult patients with BL were ide

Law, objectives of government and regimes of truth: Foucault’s understanding of law and the transformation of the law of the EU internal market

Drawing on Security, Territory, Population and The Birth of Biopolitics, this article aims, firstly, to consolidate our understanding of Foucault’s engagement with law by fleshing out his approach to law and by clarifying that he distinguishes between different kinds of law on the basis of the objectives that law serves and the regime of truth that it embodies. Secondly, using this understanding,

STM and XPS characterization of zinc phthalocyanine on InSb(001)

Zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) adsorbed on the InSb(0 0 1)-c(8 x 2) surface has been studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Coverages from sub-monolayer to monolayer (ML) have been investigated. The molecules form ordered structures on the reconstructed rows of the surface with the molecular plane parallel to the surface. A change in the electronic s

An interrelation model of power and purchasing strategies: A study of vaccine purchase for developing countries

The purpose of this study is to further understand the relationship between purchasing strategies practiced by less-powerful buyers and their purchasing power. Drawn on the resource dependency theory, a two-way relationship was predicted where power is both a cause and an effect. The theoretical predictions were then explored in a multiple-case study in the context of vaccine procurement for devel

Gait muscle activity during walking on an inclined icy surface

The objective of this study was to explain the contribution of lower extremity muscle activity to gait kinetic and kinematic adaptations for maintaining gait dynamic balance when walking on an inclined icy surface and the biomechanical mechanisms used to counteract slip risk. A two-way factorial experimental design was applied. The two independent variables were the walkway surface (ice and treadm

Hydrogen Production for Refuelling Applications

Since 2007, Intelligent Energy (IE) has been involved in developing technologies and services in the hydrogen generation space with E.ON Gas Sverige AB and Swedish Gas Centre. The aim of this work is to support the development of a high-profile demonstration of hydrogen generation technologies in a Swedish context. The overall objective of the demonstration is to deploy a reforming based hydrogen

Evolution of DC-SIGN use revealed by fitness studies of R5 HIV-I variants emerging during AIDS progression

Background: At early stages of infection CCR5 is the predominant HIV-1 coreceptor, but in approximately 50% of those infected CXCR4-using viruses emerge with disease progression. This coreceptor switch is correlated with an accelerated progression. However, those that maintain virus exclusively restricted to CCR5 (R5) also develop AIDS. We have previously reported that R5 variants in these "non-sw

Safety and tolerability of intracerebroventricular PDGF-BB in Parkinson's disease patients

BACKGROUND. Recombinant human PDGF-BB (rhPDGF-BB) reduces Parkinsonian symptoms and increases dopamine transporter (DAT) binding in several animal models of Parkinson's disease (PD). Effects of rhPDGF-BB are the result of proliferation of ventricular wall progenitor cells and reversed by blocking mitosis. Based on these restorative effects, we assessed the safety and tolerability of intracerebrove

Twelve type 2 diabetes susceptibility loci identified through large-scale association analysis

By combining genome-wide association data from 8,130 individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and 38,987 controls of European descent and following up previously unidentified meta-analysis signals in a further 34,412 cases and 59,925 controls, we identified 12 new T2D association signals with combined P < 5 x 10(-8). These include a second independent signal at the KCNQ1 locus; the first report, to
