Identification of putative novel class-I lanthipeptides in firmicutes : A combinatorial in silico analysis approach performed on genome sequenced bacteria and a close inspection of Z-geobacillin lanthipeptide biosynthesis gene cluster of the Thermophilic geobacillus sp. strain ZGt-1

Lanthipeptides are ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified polycyclic peptides. Lanthipeptides that have antimicrobial activity are known as lantibiotics. Accordingly, the discovery of novel lantibiotics constitutes a possible solution for the problem of antibiotic resistance. We utilized the publicly available genome sequences and the bioinformatic tools tailored for the detecti

Achromatic dual-waveplate for inline two color high-order harmonic generation

Abstract: We propose a design of an achromatic dual-waveplate intended to align the polarization of orthogonal two-color pulses in an inline configuration. The waveplate acts as a half-waveplate for pulses with a carrier wavelength of 1300 nm over a bandwidth of 300 nm. For the second harmonic of the pulses the waveplate acts as a full-waveplate, centered at 650 nm with a bandwidth of 100 nm. By e

Teaching design for additive manufacturing through problem-based learning

Additive Manufacturing (AM) is a technology that, while removing many of the constraints of traditional manufacturing, imposes some new constraints of its own. Because of this, engineers and designers need to be taught a new set of skills in design for additive manufacturing (DfAM) in order to become competent in designing parts that maximize the benefits offered by AM. Around the world, universit

Membrane processes in bulk fermentation: From antibiotics to biofuels and biochemicals

1. IntroductionThe end of the 20th century was marked by the start of the third and so far final wave of biotechnology, the so-called white biotechnology, aiming to substitute chemical processes based on C2/C3 chemistry of oil and gas by biotechnological processes. The standard conversion process in biotechnology is fermentation, which is used to produce a wide range of bulk products such as antib

Fouling in heat exchanger and membrane processes: Development and prevention strategies on industrial scale

In heat exchanger and membrane processes fouling stands for a significant part of the running costs such as e.g. down time for cleaning, consumption of cleaning chemicals, water and energy and contributes also to a shortened equipment life time. It is therefore one of the major challenges in the process industry. The first part of the presentation will give a general introduction into fouling in h

Minerals, phytate and dietary fibre in different fractions of oat-grain

The content of minerals and dietary fibre in different fractions of oats was investigated. The oat kernel (pericarp, testa, germ, aleurone, endosperm), accounting for 70 % of the oat seed, had a dietary fibre content of 11·5 g/100 g (dry weight basis); of this 23 % was soluble fibre components, mainly β-glucans. In contrast to most other cereals the amount of soluble fibre was distributed througho

Globalization, socio-economic status and welfare chauvinism : European perspectives on attitudes toward the exclusion of immigrants

This article addresses the question of whether globalization impacts individual preferences to exclude immigrants from national welfare systems ('welfare chauvinism'). Intergroup contact theory and arguments from the 'new cosmopolitanism' debate suggest that cross-border social contacts ('social globalization') foster a willingness to include and accept newcomers. However, group conflict theory su

Cosmopolitan attitudes through transnational social practices?

Within the scope of the debate surrounding globalization, ever increasing attention is being directed to the growth of border-crossing social relations and the emergence of transnational social spaces on the micro-level. In particular, the question of how these border-crossing interrelations influence the attitudes and values of the people involved causes some controversy. Some assume that the inc

Off-design performance investigation of a low calorific gas fired two-shaft gas turbine

Gas turbine systems are predominantly designed to be fuelled with gaseous fuels within a limited Wobbe index range (typically HHV=45-55 MJ/Nm3 or 1200-1480 Btu/scf). When low calorific fuel gases are fired, the engine will be forced to operate outside its design envelope. The added mass flow will typically raise the cycle pressure ratio and in two-shaft designs also raise the gas generator shaft s

What Do Demographics Have To Do With It? An Oaxaca-Blinder Decomposition of Changes over Time in Inequalities in Alcohol, Narcotics and Tobacco-Related Ill Health in Sweden

AbstractThe purpose of this study was to document historical trends and socioeconomic inequalities in ill health outcomes related to alcohol consumption, narcotics use and tobacco smoking over the seventeen years prior to the implementation of the Swedish government’s first strategy for alcohol, narcotics, doping and tobacco (ANDT) in 2011. We also sought to explain the changes over time in terms The purpose of this study was to document historical trends and socioeconomic inequalities in ill health outcomes related to alcohol consumption, narcotics use and tobacco smoking over the seventeen years prior to the implementation of the Swedish government’s first strategy for alcohol, narcotics, doping and tobacco (ANDT) in 2011. We also sought to explain the changes over time in terms of chang

Unequal Returns: Using the Atkinson Index to Measure Financial Risk

We apply the Atkinson (1970) inequality index to time series of asset returns to offer a novel measure of financial risk consistent with expected-utility theory. This measure is converted to a certainty-equivalent return serving as a performance measure. We extend the Atkinson index to HARA utility and derive closed-form solutions to our measures for a number of preference-return combinations. Fur

Membrane processes for the starch based sweetener industry: Applications and challenges

Membrane applications have established themselves in both the production and water loop of the starch-based sweetener industry. This presentation will give an overview of membrane opportunities in the starch-based sweetener industry is given. In the first part of this paper, the membrane opportunities in the production loop of starch-based sweeteners will be generally discussed and application stu

Damfotboll - starkt motstånd mot kvinnliga lag

Redan under årtiondena kring sekelskiftet 1900 spelades damfotboll. På grund av stort motstånd från både förbund och sportpress var vägen lång och krokiginnan kvinnor kunde spela organiserad fotboll på hög nivå.

A Safe Regression Test Selection Technique for Modelica

Running regression tests for Modelica models usually takes a long time. This paper presents a safe regression test selection technique for Modelica based on static analysis. The technique tracks dependencies between classes to compute which tests that need to be run given a change. The dependency rules have been verified using mutation testing. The technique has been evaluated on the Modelica Stan
