Role of fibroblast growth factor 8 in growth and progression of hormonal cancer

Hormonal cancers such as breast and prostate cancer arise from steroid hormone-regulated tissues. In addition to breast and prostate cancer hormonal regulation has also a role in endometrial, ovarian, testis and thyroid carcinomas. The effects of estrogens, androgens and progestagens on tumor growth are largely mediated by paracrine and autocrine target molecules which include growth factors and g

Primary seminal vesicle carcinoma detected at transurethral resection of prostate

We present a case of primary seminal vesicle carcinoma detected at transurethral resection. The clinical presentation, radiologic findings, and pathologic features of these tumors are reviewed. Grossly, seminal vesicle carcinoma is poorly circumscribed and solid or solid/cystic and may be misinterpreted as an abscess or hemorrhage on radiologic examination. Although a definitive diagnosis often ca

Do type 1 fimbriae promote inflammation in the human urinary tract?

Type 1 fimbriae have been implicated as virulence factors in animal models of urinary tract infection (UTI), but the function in human disease remains unclear. This study used a human challenge model to examine if type 1 fimbriae trigger inflammation in the urinary tract. The asymptomatic bacteriuria strain Escherichia coli 83972, which fails to express type 1 fimbriae, due to a 4.25 kb fimB-fimD

Early Miocene pollen and spores from western Jylland, Denmark - environmental and climatic implications

A palynological analysis of a Lower Miocene cored section from Sonder Vium in western Jylland, Denmark, provides new data regarding the vegetation and climate during the earliest Neogene. Most samples yielded well-preserved palynomorphs. Terrestrial pollen and spores dominate, with lesser proportions of dinoflagellates. A fluvial input into the marine setting is corroborated by the presence of fre

Protein adsorption of poly(ether urethane) surfaces modified by amphiphilic and hydrophilic polymers

A commercial biomedical poly(ether urethane), Pellethane 2363-80AE, was surface modified through the use of amphiphilic polymeric additives, and through surface grafting with poly(ethylene glycol), PEG. Two different amphiphilic polymers, Polymer C and Pluronic PE9400, were used as additives. Polymer C, a segmented polyurethane, was prepared from PEG1500, 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and a C-

An excess of chromosome 1 breakpoints in male infertility.

In a search for potential infertility loci, which might be revealed by clustering of chromosomal breakpoints, we compiled 464 infertile males with a balanced rearrangement from Mendelian Cytogenetics Network database (MCNdb) and compared their karyotypes with those of a Danish nation-wide cohort. We excluded Robertsonian translocations, rearrangements involving sex chromosomes and common variants.

Microclimate within beech stands – Part II: Thermal conditions

Within the framework of an interdisciplinary project on the effects of climate and forest management on beech-dominated deciduous forests (Swabian Jura, south-western Germany), forest meteorological investigations are carried out to analyse the influences of exposure and canopy density on the microclimate within various beech stands (Fagus sylvatica L.). This second paper of the series ‘‘Microclimat

On anti-structurable algebras and extended Dynkin diagrams

We construct Lie superalgebras osp(2n+1|4n+2) and osp(2n|4n) starting with certain classes of anti-structurable algebras via the standard embedding Lie superalgebra construction corresponding to (ε, δ)-Freudenthal Kantor triple systems.

Approximate distance oracles revisited

Let G be a geometric t-spanner in E-d with n vertices and m edges, where t is a constant. We show that G can be preprocessed in O(m log n) time, such that (1 + epsilon)-approximate shortest-path queries in G can be answered in O(1) time. The data structure uses O(n log n) space.

Hollow fibre-supported liquid membrane extraction and LC-MS/MS detection for the analysis of heterocyclic amines in urine samples

Heterocyclic amines (HCAs) are potent mutagens/carcinogens to which humans are frequently exposed through the consumption of cooked meat and fish food. The effect of normal intake of HCAs and their role in the aetiology of human cancer is unknown. To some extent, limitations of the existing analytical methods in monitoring the low levels of HCAs in biological samples have hindered obtaining conclu

The Diary Weblog and the Traveling Tales of Diasporic Tourists

As has been commonly recognised, the Internet enables a transcendence of physical and national boundaries and therefore constitutes an ideal place for forging diasporic connections. There is no denying that the Internet has the potential to greatly affect how diasporic identities and senses of belonging are formed; the question is how, and in what online context? This article investigates a cluste

Hydrolysis of tri- and monoacylglycerol by lipoprotein lipase: evidence for a common active site

The relationship between triacylglycerol and monoacylglycerol hydrolyzing activities of purified rat heart lipoprotein lipase was studied using emulsified trioleoylglycerol and micellar or albumin-bound monooleoylglycerol as substrates. The maximal reaction rates obtained with the two substrates were similar (650 and 550 nmol of fatty acid released per min per mg of protein, respectively). Additio

Local Smoothing for the Backscattering Transform

An analysis of the backscattering data for the Schrodinger operator in odd dimensions n3 motivates the introduction of the backscattering transform [image omitted]. This is an entire analytic mapping and we write [image omitted] where BNv is the Nth order term in the power series expansion at v=0. In this paper we study estimates for BNv in H(s) spaces, and prove that Bv is entire analytic in vH(s

Activated Protein C Protein C Inhibitor Complex in Patients With Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms: Is It Associated With Diameter and Growth Rate?

Increased thrombin activation has been documented in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). APC-PCI complex, a new biological marker of thrombin generation, was measured in a population of 232 patients with AAA relative and a control group and the association between aneurysm size, growth rate and APC-PCI was studied. The patients were divided into cohorts according to the AAA diameter and

Symmetry-resolved x-ray absorption fine structure and resonant Auger-spectator-electron decay study of O 1s -> Rydberg resonances in O-2

A series of resonant Auger-electron spectra excited at selected photon energies across the O 1s -> Rydberg resonances in O-2 has been measured. Applying a spectator-electron shake relaxation model originally introduced for atomic resonant Auger-electron spectra, and using, to a large extent, the assignments for the core-excited resonances available from the literature, many of the observed spectat

High-frequency QRS electrocardiogram

The standard 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) is one of the most commonly used methods for diagnosing heart disease. Standard ECG is not always optimal, however, and new ECG methods can provide additional information. Analysis of high-frequency QRS components (HF-QRS) has been shown to increase the diagnostic performance of the ECG. Several investigators have studied HF-QRS in different cardiac con

Receptor binding properties of amperozide

The receptor pharmacology of amperozide was investigated with in vitro radioligand binding technique. Amperozide possessed a high affinity to the 5-HT2 receptors (Ki = 16.5 +/- 2.1 nM) and a moderate affinity to alpha 1-adrenergic receptors of rat cerebral cortical membranes (Ki = 172 +/- 14 nM). The affinity of amperozide for striatal and limbic dopamine D2 receptors was low and not significantly

Concentration and Fluxes of Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) in Three Norway Spruce Stands along a Climatic Gradient in Sweden

Leaching of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from the forest floor and transport in soil solution into the mineral soil are important for carbon cycling in boreal forest ecosystems. We examined DOC concentrations in bulk deposition, throughfall and in soil solutions collected under the O and B horizons in three Norway spruce stands along a climatic gradient in Sweden. Mean annual temperature for the

Electron spectroscopy study of the initial stages of iron phthalocyanine growth on highly oriented pyrolitic graphite.

The nature of the intermolecular and substrate bonds of iron phthalocyanine adsorbed on highly oriented pyrolitic graphite has been investigated by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. We find that the molecules grow in a highly ordered fashion with the molecules essentially plane-parallel to the surface in both the mono- and multilayers. The spectra obtained on both

Vitamin D, parathyroid hormone and the metabolic syndrome in middle-aged and older European men

Objectives: Low serum 25-hydroxyviatmin D (25(OH)D) and elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels have been linked to insulin resistance, the metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components. Data in healthy, community-dwelling Europeans are lacking, and previous studies have not excluded subjects receiving drug treatments that may distort the relationship between 25(OH)D/PTH and MetS. The aim of our
