Amperometric biosensors for detection of sugars based on the electrical wiring of different pyranose oxidases and pyranose dehydrogenases with osmium redox polymer on graphite electrodes

Electrical wiring of different types of pyranose oxidase (P20) (fungal wild type, recombinant wild type with a hexahistidine tag, mutant form E542K with a hexa-histidine tag) from Trametes multicolor, and recombinant P20 from Coriolus sp. overexpressed in Escherichia coli as well as of pyranose dehydrogenase (PDH) from Agaricus meleagris and Agaricus xanthoderma with an osmium redox polymer (poly(

Computed tomography of pulmonary metastases from osteosarcoma: The less poor technique. A study of 51 patients with histological correlation

Background: The purpose is to evaluate the accuracy of computed tomography (CT) in the pulmonary staging of osteosarcoma. Patients and methods: Fifty-one patients presenting with osteosarcoma and at initial CT considered metastatic to the chest had lung surgery. Two teams of two senior radiologists independently reviewed all CT examinations. Their results were compared to the histological studies.

Time-domain reflectometry probe for water content and electrical conductivity measurements in saline porous media

A new coated time-domain reflectometry (TDR) probe design is described and evaluated. In contrast to previous coated TDR probes, our probe may be used to measure both the dielectric constant (K-a) and bulk electrical conductivity (sigma(a)) in saline porous media. This was made possible by attaching two coaxial cables to a 0.27-m three-rod with a coated central rod. The shield of the first cable w

Gross nitrogen mineralization-, immobilization-, and nitrification rates as a function of soil C/N ratio and microbial activity

A laboratory experiment was designed to challenge the idea that the ON ratio of forest soils may control gross N immobilization, mineralization, and nitrification rates. Soils were collected from three deciduous forests sites varying in C/N ratio between 15 and 27. They were air-dried and rewetted to induce a burst of microbial activity. The N transformation rates were calculated from an isotope d

Human mast cells decrease SLPI levels in type II - like alveolar cell model, in vitro.

Background Mast cells are known to accumulate at sites of inflammation and upon activation to release their granule content, e.g. histamine, cytokines and proteases. The secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor (SLPI) is produced in the respiratory mucous and plays a role in regulating the activity of the proteases. Result We have used the HMC-1 cell line as a model for human mast cells to invest

The Taimyr fold belt, Arctic Siberia: timing of prefold remagnetisation and regional tectonics

Late Precambrian and Palaeozoic platform sediments from the Central-South Taimyr Peninsula (Arctic Siberia) are all remagnetised. The remagnetisation is prefold and is related to thermal remagnetisation caused by Taimyr Trap magmatism. The remagnetisation age is estimated to 220-230 Ma and, hence, is considerably younger than the ca. 251 Ma age for the main body of Siberian Trap flood basalts. The

A case study of a principally new way of materials kitting - an evaluation of time consumption and physical workload

This article presents a materials kitting case study, using an alternative method for materials killing: the traditional picker-to-material principle was replaced with a material-to-picker approach. The Study was made in a materials supply workshop of an automobile plant shortly after this kitting process had been introduced. The materials kitting was video recorded and the material pickers' physi

Control of excitonic and electron-hole processes in wide-gap crystals by means of elastic uniaxial stress

The time-resolved emission spectra and the excitation spectra of the main emissions have been measured for the first time in stressed and unstressed RbI crystals using synchrotron radiation of 10-30 eV at 8 K. It has been shown that the applied elastic uniaxial stress (EUS) offers promise for the separation of the elementary multiplication mechanisms of electronic excitations. A different influenc

Structural characterization of 5,6-dichlorotetradecanoic acid, an isolated metabolite of 9,10-dichlorooctadecanoic acid, by studying picolinyl esters, pyrrolidides and methyl esters with electron ionization mass spectrometry

A method is presented for identification of positional isomers of dichlorinated fatty acids, based on derivatization to picolinyl esters prior to gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric analysis in the electron ionization mode. The mass spectra of the picolinyl esters showed structure-specific fragmentation patterns. By using the picolinyl ester, 5,6-dichlorotetradecanoic acid was identified as a m

Climate policy instruments and industry-effects and potential responses in the Swedish context

Efficient policy instruments for reducing the emission of greenhouse gases are essential for the realisation of a successful climate policy. General economic policy instruments have the potential for providing efficient emission reduction as they equalise marginal costs for emission reduction between different actors. They also provide incentives for a great variety of responses such as energy eff

Comparison of methods for soil microbial-population and biomass studies

A comparison was made of 15 different techniques which are used in assessing soil microbial populations and/or biomasses. These include direct observations (fungal standing crop, fluorescein diacetate active mycelia, acridine orange stained bacteria), cultural methods (bacterial plate counts), physiological methods (total microbial, bacterial and fungal biomasses, O2-uptake), soil enzyme analyses
