Trends in dialysis modality choice and related patient survival in the ERA-EDTA Registry over a 20-year period
Background Although previous studies suggest similar patient survival for peritoneal dialysis (PD) and haemodialysis (HD), PD use has decreased worldwide. We aimed to study trends in the choice of first dialysis modality and relate these to variation in patient and technique survival and kidney transplant rates in Europe over the last 20 years. Methods We used data from 196 076 patients within the
Ice coating –A new method of brain device insertion to mitigate acute injuries
Background: Reduction of insertion injury is likely important to approach physiological conditions in the vicinity of implanted devices intended to interface with the surrounding brain. New methods: We have developed a novel, low-friction coating around frozen, gelatin embedded needles. By introducing a layer of thawing ice onto the gelatin, decreasing surface friction, we mitigate damage caused b
Managing patients with dementia
1. Dementia is a clinical syndrome with several causes whichcreates impairments in mental ability, personality, affect andsocialisation.2. Information from family members can be very useful in theearly identification of cognitive impairment.3. Patients presenting with cognitive impairment should be evaluatedfor potentially reversible causes, with a range of laboratorytests and investigations.4. Sh
A machine learning based approach for determining the stress-strain relation of grey cast iron from nanoindentation
Apart from microhardness and elastic modulus, the stress-strain relation is another important characteristic that more and more scholars have been trying to extract from nanoindentation. With the development of artificial intelligence and computer technology, a machine learning based method is proposed in this paper to extract stress-strain curve of grey cast iron using sharp nanoindentation. Firs
Lateral variation of the native passive film on super duplex stainless steel resolved by synchrotron hard X-ray photoelectron emission microscopy
A native passive film on 25Cr-7Ni super duplex stainless steel was analyzed using synchrotron hard X-ray photoemission electron microscopy, focusing on variations between individual grains of ferrite and austenite phases. The film consists of an oxide inner layer and an oxyhydroxide outer layer, in total 2.3 nm thick. The Cr content is higher in the outer than the inner layer, ca. 80 % on average.
Gravitational footprints of massive neutrinos and lepton number breaking
We investigate the production of primordial Gravitational Waves (GWs) arising from First Order Phase Transitions (FOPTs) associated to neutrino mass generation in the context of type-I and inverse seesaw schemes. We examine both “high-scale” as well as “low-scale” variants, with either explicit or spontaneously broken lepton number symmetry U(1)L in the neutrino sector. In the latter case, a pseud
Inheritance of olfactory response to sex pheromone components in Ostrinia nubilalis
Repeatability of pheromone emissions from individual female ermine moths Yponomeuta padellus and Yponomeuta rorellus
The repeatability of the composition of pheromone emitted by individual female moths (Yponomeuta) was determined by gas Chromatographic analysis. An improved technique for repeated collections of airborne volatiles from the same moth was developed. The procedure did not harm the females and allowed precise quantification of 0.05 ng of pheromone components in 30-min collections. Individual females
Spatial arrangement of different types of pheromone-sensitive sensilla in a male moth
Dihydroorotate dehydrogenase. Profile of a novel target for antiproliferative and immunosuppressive drugs
Analysis of moth pheromone acetates by selected ion monitoring using electron impact and chemical ionization mass spectrometry
Mass spectrometric determination of moth pheromone components by means of selected ion monitoring with electron impact and chemical ionization has been evaluated. For the analysis of acetates, chemical ionization with ammonia as reactant gas proved advantageous with respect to sensitivity and selectivity. A quantitative assay for determination of pheromone samples from individual turnip moth femal

Diagnosing deep vein thrombosis in cancer patients with suspected symptoms : An individual participant data meta-analysis
Background: A previous individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis showed that the Wells rule and D-dimer testing cannot exclude suspected deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in cancer patients. Objectives: To explore reasons for this reduced diagnostic accuracy and to optimize the diagnostic pathway for cancer patients suspected of DVT. Patients and Methods: Using IPD from 13 studies in patients with
Dual origin of pairing in nuclei
The pairing correlations of the nucleus 120Sn are calculated by solving the Nambu–Gor’kov equations, including medium polarization effects resulting from the interweaving of quasiparticles, spin and density vibrations, taking into account, within the framework of nuclear field theory (NFT), processes leading to self-energy and vertex corrections and to the induced pairing interaction. From these r
Interweaving of elementary modes of excitation in superfluid nuclei through particle-vibration coupling : Quantitative account of the variety of nuclear structure observables
A complete characterization of the structure of nuclei can be obtained by combining information arising from inelastic scattering, Coulomb excitation, and γ-decay, together with one- and two-particle transfer reactions. In this way it is possible to probe both the single-particle and collective components of the nuclear many-body wave function resulting from the coupling of these modes and, as a r
Electron capture processes in intermediate mass stars
Intermediate mass stars develop a degenerate core constituted of O, Ne and Mg during their evolution. As the density in the core increases electron capture sets in igniting Ne and O burning. Particularly important is electron capture on 20Ne that has been found recently to be dominated by a second forbidden transition from the 0+ ground state of 20Ne to the 2+ ground state of 20F.
