Participation in the prescription process of mobility devices - experiences among older patients

The aim of this study was to explore older patients' experiences of participation in the prescription process of mobility devices. The study was conducted in two Swedish municipalities and was a qualitative study, based on the focus group interview methodology of Merton et al (1990). In order to recruit a sample fulfilling both homogeneity and heterogeneity criteria, occupational therapists and p

A low logic depth complex multiplier using distributed arithmetic

A combinatorial complex multiplier has been designed for use in a pipelined fast Fourier transform processor. The performance in terms of throughput of the processor is limited by the multiplication. Therefore, the multiplier is optimized to make the input-to-output delay as short as possible. A new architecture based on distributed arithmetic, Wallace-trees, and carry-lookahead adders has been de

Calibrated color measurements of agricultural foods using image analysis

A computer vision system (CVS) was implemented to quantify standard color of fruit and vegetables in sRGB, HSV and L*a*b* color spaces, and image capture conditions affecting the results were evaluated. These three color spaces are compared in terms of their suitability for color quantification in curved surfaces. The results show that sRGB standard (linear signals) was efficient to define the map

Selection of DNA aptamers against rat liver X receptors

Liver X receptors alpha and beta (LXRα; LXRβ) are members of the nuclear hormone receptor superfamily of ligand-activated transcription factors. LXRs play an important role in the reverse cholesterol transport and govern the expression of many of the proteins that are indispensable for the regulation of normal cholesterol levels in the body. SELEX, an in vitro selection technology, was used on a s

Growth mechanisms for GaAs nanowires grown in CBE

We have investigated the growth of GaAs nanowires as a function of temperatures and source pressures on (I 1 1) B-oriented substrates in chemical beam epitaxy (CBE), to establish the mechanisms that govern wire growth and to optimize growth conditions. The grown nanowires were characterized with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). We found two mechanisms to be of importance for wire growth: (i)

On variable rate frame independent predictive speech coding: Re-engineering iLBC

The Internet Low Bit-rate Coder (iLBC) is now widely used for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) applications. Unlike speech coders such as those based on Code Excited Linear Prediction (CELP), the iLBC achieves superior robustness to packet loss by avoiding inter-frame coding dependencies. While robustness to packet loss is essential, a VoIP codec should also possess the flexibility to change it

Sensor fusion as a tool to monitor dynamic dairy processes

A system for monitoring milk and fat concentration in a dynamic milk/water system by fusing information from several sensors was investigated. Standard instrumentation for food production was used, the sensors were a conductivity meter, a density meter and an optical instrument used to measure backscattered light. The system was applied to a dynamic mixing situation. Prediction error did not excee

Male gynecomastia and risk for malignant tumours--a cohort study

BACKGROUND: Men with gynecomastia may suffer from absolute or relative estrogen excess and their risk of different malignancies may be increased. We tested whether men with gynecomastia were at greater risk of developing cancer.METHODS: A cohort was formed of all the men having a histopathological diagnosis of gynecomastia at the Department of Pathology, University of Lund, following an operation

Cooking of meat and fish in Europe - results from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)

Objectives: There is epidemiologic evidence that the consumption of fried, grilled or barbecued meat and fish that are well-done or browned may be associated with an increased cancer risk. These high-temperature cooking methods are thought to be surrogates for mutagens and carcinogens produced in meat and fish, eg heterocyclic amines or polycyclic hydrocarbons. Since data on food cooking methods a

Does the hormonal situation modify lipid effects by lifestyle factors in middle-aged women? Results from a population-based study of Swedish women: the Women's Health in the Lund Area study.

The aim of the study was to outline whether the influence by lifestyle factors on serum lipids was modified by the hormonal situation in middle-aged women. Six thousand nine hundred eight women, aged 50 to 59 years, participated in a health assessment program, including a serum lipid profile evaluation. The women were grouped according to their hormonal status into premenopausal (PM) (n = 492), po
