Graft repair of a peripheral nerve without the sacrifice of a healthy donor nerve by the use of acutely dissociated autologous Schwann cells.

We hypothesised that pieces of nerve that are normally trimmed away during graft repair could be a source of Schwann cells and used to create an autologous cell-containing nerve graft. To test the idea a transsection injury was made on the rat sciatic nerve. Seven days later, pieces from the proximal and distal stumps were used for the immediate isolation of its non-neuronal cells. These cells, of

Intraoperative complications in aneurysm surgery: a prospective national study

Object. With increasing use of endovascular procedures, the number of aneurysms treated surgically will decline. in this study the authors review complications related to the surgical treatment of aneurysms and address the issue of maintaining quality standards on a national level. Methods. A prospective, nonselected amalgamation of every aneurysm case treated in five of six neurosurgical centers

Varicella zoster in Guinea-Bissau: intensity of exposure and severity of infection

OBJECTIVE: To describe the epidemiology of and risk factors for severe chickenpox in Guinea- Bissau. METHODS: A prospective household study in a semiurban area of the capital. Severity was assessed by number of pox, fever response and presence of pneumonia. Severity was compared for the first case in a house, that is, the index case, and the secondary cases infected at home. RESULT: We identified

Changing Mobility Pattern and the Aging Population in Sweden

A number of Investigations of travel habits and patterns of activity of the elderly have been carried out In Sweden during the 1980s. The results from a study made by the Department of Traffic Planning and Engineering at the Lund Institute ofTechnology are presented. The purpose of this study was to determine (a) older people's access to various means of transportation, (b) travel habits of older

Hepatitis C in chronic liver disease: an epidemiological study based on 566 consecutive patients undergoing liver biopsy during a 10-year period

We analysed the presence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibodies in 566 patients undergoing liver biopsy. While over 20% of the patients were anti-HCV positive according to ELISA, only 13.8% had HCV antibodies when tested with a four-antigen recombinant immunoblot assay (RIBA 2). At the time of inclusion in the study, most patients were asymptomatic, irrespective of whether they were HCV-positive. H

Status of design and construction of the Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) for the ATLAS experiment at the LHC

The ATLAS Inner Detector consists of three sub-systems, the Pixel Detector at the innermost radius, the Semi-Conductor Tracker at intermediate radii, and the Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) at the outermost radius in front of the electromagnetic calorimeter. The TRT provides a combination of continuous tracking with many projective measurements based on individual drift-tubes (or straws) and of

Master's Theses in Automatic Control 1978-1979

This report contains abstracts of master theses (examensarbete) made at the Department of Automatic Control, Lund, during the academic year 78/79. During this year 9 theses were made by 12 students. The theses are written in Swedish with an English abstract.

Population Dynamics of Resource Limited Plants and Their Pollinators

In this paper we build upon and generalize an earlier model of the interactions between a plant and its pollinator (Ingvarsson and Lundberg, 1995). In this model we assume that the performance of the pollinator population is directly linked to the size of the plant population. To avoid the problem of both populations growing exponentially we have, without loss of generality, assumed the plant popu

Micro fungi in Swedish coniferous forest soils

Microfungi represent an important part of the fungal flora in coniferous forest soils and they play a significant role in the decomposition processes. Common genera and species isolated at 3 sites in Sweden, 2 of which have well developed Fe podzol soil profiles are presented. Fungal isolations were made with a soil-washing technique from 5 soil horizons. Aureobasidium and Cladosporium were only i

Antibodies against 5-Hydroxymethyl-2'-deoxyuridine Are Associated with Lifestyle Factors and GSTM1 Genotype: A Report from the Malmö Diet and Cancer Cohort.

Plasma autoantibodies (aAbs) against the oxidized DNA base derivative 5-hydroxymethyl-2'-deoxyuridine (5-HMdU) are potential biomarkers of cancer risk and oxidative stress. We examined their association with a number of cancer risk factors: smoking, alcohol habits, body fatness, and absence of the glutathione S-transferases M1 and T1 (GSTM1 and GSTT1) in a sample from the population-based Malmö Di

Cytosolic free calcium in platelets: relationships to blood pressure and indices of systemic calcium metabolism

Relationships between cytosolic free calcium ([Ca2+]i) in platelets, indices of systemic calcium metabolism and blood pressure were examined in 86 subjects; 29 patients with untreated and 29 patients with treated essential hypertension, six patients with borderline hypertension and 22 healthy reference subjects. In order to analyse interactions between the variables, multivariate statistical analy

Aiming for sustainability in the tour operating business

Indications of what the tour-operating sector considers to be 'good practice' can be drawn from voluntary initiatives such as existing eco-labels and codes of conduct. However, practical implementation of such guidance varies greatly from one tour operator to another, depending on different types of factors, such as size, financial capacity, corporate structure, operational location, organizationa
