Cancer incidence among Swedish pulp and paper mill workers: a cohort study of sulphate and sulphite mills

Associations between various malignancies and work in the pulp and paper industry have been reported but mostly in analyses of mortality rather than incidence. We aimed to study cancer incidence by main mill pulping process, department and gender in a Swedish cohort of pulp and paper mill workers. The cohort (18,113 males and 2,292 females, enrolled from 1939 to 1999 with > 1 year of employment) w

Nocturia and Quality of Life: Results from the Boston Area Community Health Survey

Background: Nocturia, a common complaint in aging men and women, is frequently cited as the cause of nocturnal awakenings leading to sleep loss, daytime fatigue, and reduced quality of life (QOL). Objective: Investigate the association of nocturia with QOL and depressive symptoms among men and women. Design, setting, and participants: A population-based epidemiologic survey of urologic symptoms am

How Technology-Based University Research Drives Innovation in Europe and China – Leveraging the Power of Proximity

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to assess how technology-based university research drives innovation in Europe and China. Design/methodology/approach – This paper draws on extensive theoretical research and literature reviews, and presents a framework based on theories on networking, knowledge creation and innovation. It then introduces three European cases to illustrate practical appli

Assistive technology use and human rights enjoyment: a cross-sectional study in Bangladesh

Background: About half a billion people with disabilities in developing countries have limited access to assistive technology. The Convention on the Rights of persons with Disabilities requires governments to take measures to ensure provision of such technologies. To guide implementation of these measures there is a need for understanding health outcomes from a human rights perspective. The object

Globalization of Monitoring Practices: The Case of American Influences on the Dismissal Risk of European CEOs

This study examines globalization of monitoring practices by focusing on how American (U.S.) influences on European firms impact the dismissal risk for these firms’ CEOs. Specifically, we argue that the stronger short term orientation of the American corporate governance system increase the dismissal performance sensitivity faced by European CEOs, indirectly and directly. The former materializes v

Daily and hourly rainfall distribution in space and time - conditions in southern Sweden

Very extreme events occur randomly in space and in time. In this paper daily precipitation from more than 200 stations within a 10 000 km(2) region in the very south of Sweden is analysed. While there is a relation between moderate daily precipitation and annual precipitation, the most extreme events are found to be independent of annual precipitation and also of altitude and distance to the sea.

Modelling of growing season methane fluxes in a high-Arctic wet tundra ecosystem 1997-2010 using in situ and high-resolution satellite data

Methane (CH4) fluxes 1997-2010 were studied by combining remotely sensed normalised difference water index (NDWI) with in situ CH4 fluxes from Rylekaerene, a high-Arctic wet tundra ecosystem in the Zackenberg valley, north-eastern Greenland. In situ CH4 fluxes were measured using the closed-chamber technique. Regression models between in situ CH4 fluxes and environmental variables [soil temperatur

Influence of the crystallographic orientation and thickness of thin copper coatings during nanoindentation

The structure of interest consists of a nanometer thin copper coating, resting on a stiffer substrate. The elastic and plastic properties of the coating are investigated for three crystallographic orientations and two coating thicknesses using nanoindentation simulated by molecular dynamics. The force-displacement curve, the atomic rearrangement, the stresses and the lattice disorder are monitored

Bit Error Rate Performance of Generalized Frequency Division Multiplexing

Generalized frequency division multiplexing is a non-orthogonal, digital multicarrier transmission scheme with attractive features that address the requirements of emerging applications of wireless communications systems in areas like cognitive radio and machine-to-machine communication. In this paper, first a linear system description is obtained for the transmitter by ordering data in a time-fre

Extraterrestrial spinels and the astronomical perspective on Earth's geological record and evolution of life

Relict spinel grains (similar to 25-250 mu m in diameter) from decomposed extraterrestrial material in Archean to Recent sediments can be used to reconstruct variations in the flux of different types of meteorites to Earth through the ages. Meteorite falls are rare and meteorites weather and decay rapidly on the Earth surface, making it a challenge to reconstruct ancient fluxes. Almost all meteori

Added value of interpreter experience in occult and suspect hip fractures: a retrospective analysis of 254 patients.

The influence of experience in categorizing suspect and occult fractures on radiography compared to MRI and clinical outcome has not been studied. The aim of this study is to evaluate the importance of experience in diagnosing normal or suspect hip radiographs compared to MRI. Primarily reported normal or suspect radiography in 254 patients with low-energy hip trauma and subsequent MRI was re-eval

Performance Evaluation of III–V Nanowire Transistors

III–V nanowire (NW) transistors are an emerging technology with the prospect of high performance and low power dissipation. Performance evaluations of these devices, however, have focused mostly on the intrinsic properties of the NW, excluding any parasitic elements. In this paper, a III–V NW transistor architecture is investigated, based on a NW array with a realistic footprint. Based on scaling

Sex and the Syndrome: Individual and Population Consistency in Behaviour in Rock Pool Prawn Palaemon elegans

Animal personality has been widely documented across a range of species. The concept of personality is composed of individual behavioural consistency across time and between situations, and also behavioural trait correlations known as behavioural syndromes. Whilst many studies have now investigated the stability of individual personality traits, few have analysed the stability over time of entire

Relationships between postural orientation and self reported function, hop performance and muscle power in subjects with anterior cruciate ligament injury.

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is associated not only with knee instability and impaired neuromuscular control, but also with altered postural orientation manifested as observable "substitution patterns". However, tests currently used to evaluate knee function in subjects with ACL injury are not designed to assess postural orientation. Therefore, we are in the

Search for a new resonance decaying to a W or Z boson and a Higgs boson in the [Formula: see text] final states with the ATLAS detector.

A search for a new resonance decaying to a W or Z boson and a Higgs boson in the [Formula: see text] final states is performed using 20.3 fb[Formula: see text] of pp collision data recorded at [Formula: see text] 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The search is conducted by examining the WH / ZH invariant mass distribution for a localized excess. No significant deviation f

Genetic variability and cadmium metabolism and toxicity

Kadmium skadar framförallt njurarna och skelettet och kan antagligen även orsaAbstract: Cadmium (Cd) is ubiquitous in the environment. Human exposure in non-smokers occurs mainly via intake of healthy food like vegetables, cereals, and shellfish. Adverse health effects on kidney and bone at low-level environmental Cd exposure are well-documented in adults. There is considerable inter-individual variation in both metabolism (toxicokinetics) and toxicity (toxicodynamics) of C
