Vertical nanotubes connected by a subsurface nanochannel

We have built an array of vertical nanotubes connected by a subsurface nanofluidic channel. The nanotube system is to be used for cell injections. By culturing cells on top of the nanotubes the cells will be pierced and molecules can enter the cells via the subsurface channel. Several channels can be made on the same sample and different molecules can be injected into different subpopulations of c

Fabrication of 10 nm enclosed nanofluidic channels

We made uniform arrays of nanometer scale structures using nanoimprint lithography over large areas (100 mm wafers). The nanofluidic channels were further narrowed and sealed by techniques that are based on nonuniform deposition. The resulting sealed channels have a cross section as small as 10 nm by 50 nm, of great importance for confining biological molecules into ultrasmall spaces. These techni

Near-field scanner for moving molecules

A new technology that provides high optical resolution as well as very high data rates for moving molecules is presented. An important aspect of the device is the dependence of both the near-field radiation pattern and the far-field transmission of a thin slit on the polarization of the incident light.

Sorting biomolecules with microdevices

Micro- and nanofabrication techniques have provided an unprecedented opportunity to create a designed world in which separation and fractionation technologies which normally occur on the macroscopic scale can be optimized by designing structures which utilize the basic physics of the process, or new processes can be realized by building structures which normally do not exist without external desig

Employment Protection Reform, Enforcement in Collective Agreements and Worker Flows

We analyze a reform of notice periods for employer-initiated separations in Sweden, which reduced the notice periods for newly hired older workers substantially but implied minor or no changes in the advance notices for younger workers. The reform was initiated at different times depending on collective agreement. These circumstances provide ample opportunity for the identification of its effects.

Inheritance of glabrous plants in Helianthemum oelandicum var. oelandicum and spatial patterns of allele frequencies in local populations

Helianthemum oelandicum var. oelandicum is an endemic taxon on the Baltic island of Öland, SE Sweden. Plants can be classified into two morphs: the bristled morph (with bristles and with or without scattered stellate hairs) and the glabrous morph (without bristles and stellate hairs). In crosses between plants assumed to be homozygous for the trait that characterises the phenotypes of the two morp

Integrated water management background to modern approach, with two case examples

Most of the present scientific efforts and technical developments within water supply, water treatment technology, environmental protection and restoration methods are still devoted to technology designed by, and applicable in rich, developed countries. These technologies emerged in a long process of development during the last century, mainly in European countries and in North America. During thi

Novel approaches to enzyme-immunoassay

When applying conventional immunological assays involving the use of a labeled moiety, sensitivity is gained at the expense of time since equilibrium conditions are a prerequisite for such assays. Since an analysis in this sense may take from several hours to a few days,1,2 much effort has been made lately to shorten the time of assay. This has also (as will be discussed later in the chapter) been

The content of reablement : Exploring occupational and physiotherapy interventions

Statement of context: Occupational therapists and physiotherapists in a Swedish municipality answered a web-based survey about their reablement interventions. Critical reflection on practice: There were overlapping areas as well as differences regarding the focus of occupational and physiotherapy interventions. Regarding the duration of interventions, occupational therapy was implemented over a sh

Poly(ε-caprolactone)/cellulose nanocrystal nanocomposite mechanical reinforcement and morphology : the role of nanocrystal pre-dispersion

Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) incorporation in polymeric matrices is an environmentally friendly approach to mechanical reinforcement. In general, significant mechanical reinforcement can only be achieved by means of good CNC dispersion at random orientation. These primary characteristics are even more relevant for the preparation of nanocomposites based on hydrophobic matrices, such as poly(ε-capro

Outcome of extremely preterm infants after iatrogenic or spontaneous birth

Introduction: The risks of preterm birth are known. We investigated the perinatal and infant mortality and morbidity after iatrogenic or spontaneous onset of extremely preterm birth. Material and methods: The present study used data from the population-based EXPRESS study comprising all infants delivered before 27+0 gestational weeks in Sweden between 2004 and 2007. All fetuses alive at admission

Bivariate genome-wide association study of depressive symptoms with type 2 diabetes and quantitative glycemic traits

Objective: Shared genetic background may explain phenotypic associations between depression and Type 2 diabetes (T2D). We aimed to study, on a genome-wide level, if genetic correlation and pleiotropic loci exist between depressive symptoms and T2D or glycemic traits. Methods: We estimated single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-based heritability and analyzed genetic correlation between depressive sy

Re-inforcing the cell death army in the fight against breast cancer

Metastatic breast cancer is responsible for most breast cancer-related deaths. Disseminated cancer cells have developed an intrinsic ability to resist anchorage-dependent apoptosis (anoikis). Anoikis is caused by the absence of cellular adhesion, a process that underpins lumen formation and maintenance during mammary gland development and homeostasis. In healthy cells, anoikis is mostly governed b

Continuous Model Validation using Reference Attribute Grammars

Just like current software systems, models are characterised by increasing complexity and rate of change. Yet, these models only become useful if they can be continuously evaluated and validated. To achieve sufficiently low response times for large models, incremental analysis is required. Reference Attribute Grammars (RAGs) offer mechanisms to perform an incremental analysis efficiently using dyn

Chimpanzees like to copy human visitors to the zoo - Ig Nobel prize

How good is your best chimpanzee impression? Go to the zoo and you probably wouldn’t be surprised to see people copying chimpanzees in order to grab their attention. But our latest research, which recently won the Ig Nobel Prize for Anthropology, suggests you are just as likely to see chimpanzees imitating the human visitors.
