Species and emm-type distribution of group C and G streptococci from different sites of isolation
beta-Haemolytic streptococci of groups C (GCS) and G (GGS) from human infections typically belong to Streptococcus dysgalactiae and are important human pathogens. Among GGS (183 isolates), several emm-types were identified without significant differences between different sites of isolation. For GCS (79 isolates), the type-distribution was markedly different and more restricted.
Concentration Camp Rituals: An Extreme Case of Insecurity
Reason(s) for writing and research problem(s): This article analyzes the experiences retold by former concentration camp detainees who were placed in concentration camps like civilians at the beginning of the Bosnian war in the 1990s. Aims of the paper (scientific and/or social): The article aims to describe the recounted social interaction rituals after time spent in a concentration camp as well
Preservation of biological markers in clasts within impact melt breccias from the haughton impact structure, Devon Island
The 39-2Ma Haughton impact structure on Devon Island comprises a thick target succession of sedimentary rocks, mainly carbonates. The carbonates contain pre-impact organic matter, including fossil biological markers. Haughton is located in an area where no major thermal event has affected the sedimentary succession after heating caused by impact. This makes Haughton uniquely suitable for studies c
Targeting impulsivity in Parkinson's disease using atomoxetine
Noradrenergic dysfunction may play a significant role in cognition in Parkinson's disease due to the early degeneration of the locus coeruleus. Converging evidence from patient and animal studies points to the role of noradrenaline in dopaminergically insensitive aspects of the parkinsonian dysexecutive syndrome, yet the direct effects of noradrenergic enhancement have not to date been addressed.
Characterizing mild cognitive impairment in incident Parkinson disease : the ICICLE-PD study
OBJECTIVE: To describe the frequency of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in Parkinson disease (PD) in a cohort of newly diagnosed incident PD cases and the associations with a panel of biomarkers.METHODS: Between June 2009 and December 2011, 219 subjects with PD and 99 age-matched controls participated in clinical and neuropsychological assessments as part of a longitudinal observational study. Con
The CamPaIGN study of Parkinson's disease : 10-year outlook in an incident population-based cohort
BACKGROUND: Prognosis in Parkinson's disease (PD) remains poorly understood due to a lack of unbiased data on the natural history of treated PD. The CamPaIGN study has been the first to prospectively track disease evolution from diagnosis in an unselected population-representative incident cohort. We now report the 10-year follow-up data, focusing on three key irreversible milestones: postural ins
Conflicting Climate Change Frames in a Global Field of Media Discourse
Reducing global emissions will require a global cosmopolitan culture built from detailed attention to conflicting national climate change frames (interpretations) in media discourse. The authors analyze the global field of media climate change discourse using 17 diverse cases and 131 frames. They find four main conflicting dimensions of difference: validity of climate science, scale of ecological
Atrial high rate episodes predict clinical outcome in patients with cardiac resynchronization therapy
OBJECTIVES: Up to 50% of patients qualified for cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) have documented atrial fibrillation (AF) prior to CRT-implantation. This finding is associated with worse prognosis but few studies have evaluated the importance of post-implant device-detected AF. This study aimed to assess the prognostic impact of device-detected atrial high rate episodes (AHRE), as a surroga

Normal vaginal delivery is to be recommended for haemophilia carrier gravidae
Every child with severe or moderate haemophilia A or B, born in Sweden during the period 1970-1990, was traced in the national haemophilia register, all 117 case records being surveyed for mode of delivery and perinatal complications. Of the 117 deliveries. 13 were by caesarean section and the remaining 104 vaginal. Of the 13 caesarean sections, 2 were performed because the woman was a haemophilia

The stifling silence around scholarly creativity in doctoral education: experiences of students and supervisors in four disciplines
The demand for developing creativity among doctoral students is found in a number of educational policies all over the world. Yet, earlier studies on Swedish doctoral education suggest that doctoral students’ creativity is not always encouraged. Based on a critical hermeneutic approach and cases in four different disciplines, the aim of this study was therefore (1) to explore different shapes of d
The search for sustainable subsurface habitats on mars, and the sampling of impact ejecta
On Earth, the deep subsurface biosphere of both the oceanic and the continental crust is well known for surviving harsh conditions and environments characterized by high temperatures, high pressures, extreme pHs, and the absence of sunlight. The microorganisms of the terrestrial deep biosphere have an excellent capacity for adapting to changing geochemistry, as the alteration of the crust proceeds
The preservation of fossil biomarkers during meteorite impact events : Experimental evidence from biomarker-rich projectiles and target rocks
A Devonian siltstone from Orkney, Scotland, shows survival of biomarkers in high-velocity impact experiments. The biomarkers were detected in ejecta fragments from experiments involving normal incidence of steel projectiles at 5-6 km s-1, and in projectile fragments from impact experiments into sand and water at 2-5 km s-1. The associated peak shock pressures were calculated to be in the range of
Sample return missions to minor bodies
Mark Burchell and the organizers of an RAS Specialist Discussion Meeting in May 2012 argue, on the basis of the Stardust and Hayabusa missions, that collecting samples from asteroids and comets offers a potentially rich scientific return – and one that can be exploited for many years to come.
Intensity of factor VIII treatment and the development of inhibitors in non-severe hemophilia A patients : Results of the INSIGHT case-control study
Essentials: Research suggests that intensive treatment episodes may increase the risk to develop inhibitors. We performed an international nested case-control study with 298 non-severe hemophilia A patients. Surgery and a high dose of factor VIII concentrate were associated with increased inhibitor risk. Physicians need to review arguments for factor VIII dose and elective surgery extra critically
Anti-amyloid compounds inhibit α-synuclein aggregation induced by protein misfolding cyclic amplification (PMCA)
Filaments made of α-synuclein form the characteristic Lewy pathology in Parkinson and other diseases. The formation of α-synuclein filaments can be reproduced in vitro by incubation of recombinant protein, but the filament growth is very slow and highly variable and so unsuitable for fast high throughput anti-aggregation drug screening. To overcome this obstacle we have investigated whether the pr
Predictors of Parkinson's disease dementia : towards targeted therapies for a heterogeneous disease
Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD) has become an increasing area of research as treatments for the motor features of Parkinson's disease (PD) have improved and the population of patients with PD grows and ages. If predictors could be used to identify a sub-population of patients at risk of developing an early PDD then research into its neuropathological basis and treatment could be more effectivel
