Amperometric monitoring of redox activity in living yeast cells: comparison of menadione and menadione sodium bisulfite as electron transfer mediators
An amperometric method was applied for real-time monitoring of intracellular redox enzyme activity. Baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) cells were immobilized on platinum microband electrodes and mediated anodic currents were measured. The currents were observed in the absence and in the presence of glucose as a source of reducing equivalents, NADH and NADPH. 2-Methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone (mena

Functional thyrotropin receptor expression in the pituitary folliculo-stellate cell line TtT/GF
Thyrotropin secretion from the anterior pituitary is regulated mainly through TRH and thyroid hormones. Recent findings of a TSH receptor (TSHR) on folliculo-stellate (FS) cells in the human anterior pituitary indicate that TSH secretion might, in addition, be regulated in a paracrine manner via FS cells. In order to elucidate the physiological relevance of TSHR expression in FS cells we evaluated
Luminescence lifetime response of pressure-sensitive paint to a pressure transient
Pressure-sensitive paint (PSP) is used to acquire high-fidelity images of steads pressure distributions across surfaces. The PSP luminescence emission response to excitation light depends in a straightforward way on the oxygen concentration (hence air pressure) and the irradiance incident on the PSP lumiphores. Often, however, the phenomenon of interest is unsteady. During a rapid change in pressu
Using Students as Subjects – A Comparative Study of Students and Professionals in Lead-Time Impact Assessment
In many studiesin software engineering students are used instead of professionalsoftware developers, although the objective is to draw conclusionsvalid for professional software developers. This paper presentsa study where the difference between the two groups is evaluated.People from the two groups have individually carried out a non-trivialsoftware engineering judgement task involving the assess
A randomized trial of maintenance therapy for vasculitis associated with antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibodies
BACKGROUND: The primary systemic vasculitides usually associated with autoantibodies to neutrophil cytoplasmic antigens include Wegener's granulomatosis and microscopic polyangiitis. We investigated whether exposure to cyclophosphamide in patients with generalized vasculitis could be reduced by substitution of azathioprine at remission. METHODS: We studied patients with a new diagnosis of generali
Fibre type composition of rabbit tibialis anterior and extensor digitorum longus muscles
Rabbit tibialis anterior (TA) and extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles are used extensively in studies of stimulation-induced fibre type transformation, but the proportions and sizes of the 2 main fibre types, and the way in which they are distributed within the muscles, have never been described in any detail. In this study, transverse sections were processed by enzyme histochemical and immuno
Faint stars in the Ursa Minor dwarf spheroidal galaxy: implications for the low-mass stellar initial mass function at high redshift
The stellar initial mass function at high redshift is an important defining property of the first stellar systems to form and may also play a role in various dark matter problems. We here determine the faint stellar luminosity function in an apparently dark-matter-dominated external galaxy in which the stars formed at high redshift. The Ursa Minor dwarf spheroidal galaxy is a system with a particu
Coexistence of superdeformed shapes in Er-154
A new superdeformed rotational band has been observed in Er-154 using the Euroball Ge detector array. The new band and the one previously observed can be understood as based on coexisting superdeformed structures at prolate and triaxial shapes, respectively. The observation resolves long-standing difficulties in the theoretical interpretation of superdeformed states in Er-154.
Association between inflammation and epithelial damage-restitution processes in allergic airways in vivo
BACKGROUND: Associations between allergen challenge-induced sites of epithelial damage and the distribution of leucocytes and extravasated plasma remain unexplored. OBJECTIVE: To study neutrophils, eosinophils, and fibrinogen at allergen challenge-induced patchy epithelial damage-restitution sites in guinea-pig trachea. METHODS: After local challenge tracheal tissue (cryo sections and whole-mounts
A geochronological and geochemical study of rocks from Gjelsvikfjella, Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica - implications for Mesoproterozoic correlations and assembly of Gondwana
The Jutulsessen nunataks (72degrees00'S; 2degrees30'E), Gjelsvikfjella, Dronning Maud Land (DML), consist mainly of migmatites of two types. A heterogeneous banded amphibolite facies gneisses; and a more homogeneous part. In the more homogeneous part, partial melts form along axial planes to tight folds. Numerous pegmatitic dykes occur in both migmatites. The homogeneous part of the migmatite has
Implantation of the Femoral Stem into a Bed of Titanium Granules Using Vibration: A pilot study of a new method for prosthetic fixation in 5 patients followed for up to 15 years
This study describes a new method for the fixation of titanium hip stem prostheses based on interdigitation of irregularly shaped porous titanium granules onto bone tissue. The granules were distributed into the prepared femoral cavity using a vibrating tool, and the stem was vibrated and tapped into the bed of granules. In this pilot study, 5 patients were followed between 9 and 15 years. The cli
Measurement of total and unilateral renal blood flow by oblique-angle velocity-encoded 2D-cine magnetic resonance angiography.
Two independent measurements of total renal blood flow (RBF) were made in healthy human subjects (n = 14, mean age 30 yr) by CINE phase-contrast magnetic resonance angiography. RBF, measured by summing the flows measured in the right and left renal arteries, was 1152 ± 44 ml/min (mean ± SE). RBF, measured from the difference between supra- and infrarenal abdominal aorta flow, was 1109 ± 68 ml/min.
Three-dimensional power Doppler ultrasound assessment of the cervix for the prediction of successful induction of labor with prostaglandin in prolonged pregnancy.
Exit biology: Battle for the nascent chain
Ban and coworkers at ETH are step-by-step widening the perspective of the actions on the ribosome (Bingel-Erienmeyer et al., 2008). The last one in the series is the localization of the binding site of peptide deformylase at the mouth of the polypeptide exit tunnel.
The impact of maternal smoking during pregnancy on delivery outcome
BACKGROUND: Maternal smoking during pregnancy is associated with pre-term birth, intrauterine growth retardation, a small head circumference, a low Apgar score at 5 min and stillbirths and neonatal deaths. This study was undertaken in order to investigate the impact of maternal smoking during pregnancy when all these outcomes were considered. METHODS: With the use of the Swedish Medical Birth Regi
Transverse-mass dependence of two-pion correlations in Au+Au collisions at root(NN)-N-S=130 GeV
Two-pion correlations in roots(NN) = 130 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC have been measured over a broad range of pair transverse momentum k(T) by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC. The k(T) dependent transverse radii are similar to results from heavy-ion collisions at roots(NN) = 4.1 , 4.9, and 17.3 GeV, whereas the longitudinal radius increases monotonically with beam energy. The ratio of the outwards
The political ecology of automobile recycling in Europe
This paper addresses the relationship between organizations and the natural environment from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. In doing so, it contributes in three ways. First, it satisfies the need for more political perspectives in enviromnent-related research. Second, by analyzing the end-of-life vehicle issue that the European automobile industry addressed in the 1990s, the paper sa
The meaning of acute confusional state from the perspective of elderly patients.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to illuminate lived experience of having been in an acute confusional state (ACS) as narrated by elderly patients in orthopaedic care. METHOD: Qualitative study with phenomenological hermeneutic method for analysing the data based on narrative interviews. Fifty patients (67-96 years of age) who developed ACS during hospitalisation and in all cases the ACS ceas
