Differential alterations in metabolic pattern of the spliceosomal UsnRNAs during pre-malignant lung lesions induced by benzo(a)pyrene: modulation by tea polyphenols

The differential alterations of the spliceosomal UsnRNAs (U1, U2, U4, U5, and U6) were reported to be associated with cellular proliferation and development. The attempt was made in this study to analyze the metabolic pattern of the spliceosomal UsnRNAs during the development of pre-malignant lung lesions induced in experimental mice model system by benzo(a)pyrene (BP) and also to see how tea poly

A Monte-Carlo program converting activity distributions to absorbed dose distributions in a radionuclide treatment planning system

In systemic radiation therapy, the absorbed dose distribution must be calculated from the individual activity distribution. A computer code has been developed for the conversion of an arbitrary activity distribution to a 3-D absorbed dose distribution. The activity distribution can be described either analytically or as a voxel based distribution, which comes from a SPECT acquisition. Decay points

Reflections on Danish and Scandinavian church archaeology focusing on three turningpoints, where new perspectives are introduced: Around 1950, 1980 and 2000. Implicit three periods are presented in the history of church archaeology, 1950-80, 1980-2000, and after 2000. The new perspectives are followed by new ways of illustrating the churches.

Demand Side Activities for Electric Load Reduction

The research described in this thesis, focuses on some activities on the demand side that could reduce peak load in electricity system by using consumer flexibility i.e. by increasing the demand side response to signals coming from the energy market. The major objective is to test and analyse different strategies to reduce peak load at the demand side considering their techno-economic, environment

Attosecond pulses generation with an ellipticity-modulated laser pulse

Attosecond pulse emission using a laser field with time-dependent ellipticity is studied experimentally and theoretically. Our theoretical approach is validated by comparison with experimental VUV spectra. We show in calculations that the VUV emission can be confined into a narrow temporal window in which the fundamental polarization is quasi-linear. We find an analytical equation describing the d

Two-step recovery process for tryptophan tagged cutinase: Interfacing aqueous two-phase extraction and hydrophobic interaction chromatography

In this work, the interfacing of a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-phosphate aqueous two-phase system with hydrophobic interaction chromatography (HIC) for primary recovery of an intracellular protein was evaluated. As a model protein, a recombinant cutinase furnished with a tryptophan-proline (WP) peptide tag was used and produced intracellularly in Escherichia coli (E. coli). E. coli cell homogenate

Production, characterization and use of monoclonal antibodies against the major extracellular human cysteine proteinase inhibitors cystatin C and kininogen

Murine monoclonal antibodies against the major cysteine proteinase inhibitors of human biological fluids, cystatin C and kininogen, were produced. The cystatin C antibody, HCC3, with a Ka of 2times107 l/mol, increased the inhibition of papain by cystatin C and was suitable for use in immunoblotting, immunohistochemistry and in the construction of a sensitive sandwich enzyme immunoassay for quantif

Centrality and transverse momentum dependence of collective flow in 158 A GeV Pb+Pb collisions measured via inclusive photons

Directed and elliptic flow of inclusive photons near mid-rapidity in 158 A GeV Pb + Pb collisions has been studied. The data have been obtained with the photon spectrometer LEDA of the WA98 experiment at the CERN SPS. The flow strength has been measured for various centralities as a function of p(T) and rapidity over 0. 18 < p(T) < 1.5 GeV/c and 2.3 < y < 2.9. The angular anisotropy has been studi

Isolation of pigment-free bulk lipids from thylakoids

Lipids from spinach thylakoids were extracted with chloroform/methanol and separated from pigments in a single chromatographic step run at 5 degrees C using silicic acid adjusted to pH 8. The isolated lipid fraction contained essentially the same amounts of individual lipids as in the initial extract. It contained less than 0.1% of the initial chlorophylls and carotenoids.

Interstitial cells of Cajal are normally distributed in both ganglionated and aganglionic bowel in Hirschsprung's disease

Surgery for Hirschsprung's disease is often complicated by post-operative bowel motility disorders. The impact of intestinal neural histology on the surgical outcome has been previously studied, but no information is available concerning the influence of the distribution of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) on these complications. These cells are considered to be pacemakers in the gastrointestinal

Dental and vertebral morphology of the enigmatic mosasaur Dollosaurus (Reptilia, Mosasauridae) from the lower Campanian (Upper Cretaceous) of southern Sweden

Teeth, jawbone fragments and vertebrae of an unusual mosasaurine mosasaur, Dollosaurns, have been collected from marine strata of latest early Campanian age in the Kristianstad Basin, southern Sweden. This material enables a detailed analysis of dental and vertebral characters, which, in turn, are used to tentatively distinguish Dollosaurus from the closely related globidensine Prognathodon. Howev

Different clinical expressions in two families with Stargardt's macular dystrophy (STGD1)

Purpose: To describe the clinical expressions, with emphasis on electrophysiological examinations, in two Swedish families with Stargardt's macular dystrophy (STGD1). Methods. Two pairs of siblings with STGD1, for whom diagnosis had been confirmed by genetic linkage to the ABCA4 gene region, were examined regarding visual acuity, kinetic perimetry, fundus photography, full-field ERG and multifocal

Changes in patients' need of nursing care reflected in the Zebra system.

During 1995-97, many head nurses stated that they had perceived an increase in patients' need of nursing care. A questionnaire was designed to determine the reasons for this. The purpose of the investigation was to answer two questions, 'What were the reasons for head nurses perception of an increase in patients need of nursing care from 1995 to May 1997?' and, 'Does patient classification in the

Series summation of fractal fluctuations in electron billiard arrays

We fabricate a single billiard, a double billiard array, and a triple billiard array by etching a GaInAs/InP heterostructure, and perform a fractal analysis of the low-temperature magneto-conductance fluctuations measured in the billiards to facilitate an empirical study of how fractals combine in a physical system. We compare our results to simulated fractal traces, and find for both experiment a

Marked Re-Utilization of Free Fatty Acids During Activated Lipolysis in Human Skeletal Muscle.

Release of glycerol and free fatty acids (FFA) was investigated in human skeletal muscle strips. In the basal state, glycerol and FFA were released at almost equimolar rates (0.3 nmol/ng tissue.90 min). A nonselective beta-adrenoceptor agonist, isoprenaline, caused a concentration-dependent stimulation of glycerol release, whereas FFA release was unaffected. Basal and isoprenaline-induced glycerol
