Metastable VO2 complexes in silicon: experimental and theoretical modeling studies
We report on a combined experimental and theoretical study of the metastable form of the vacancy-dioxygen defect in Si labeled VO2*. Important new experimental observations are the 2 detection of mixed local vibrational modes of VO*(2) in O-16, O-18 co-doped samples, the determination of the position of LVM bands for the negatively charged defect, and an assignment of an acceptor level at about E-
First stars IV. CS 29497-030: Evidence for operation of the s-process at very low metallicity
We present an abundance analysis of the very metal-poor, carbon-enhancedstar CS 29497-030. Our results indicate that this unusually hot turnoffstar (Teff = 6650 K, log g = 3.5) has a metallicity [Fe/H] =-2.8, and exhibits large overabundances of carbon ([C/Fe] = +2.38),nitrogen ([N/Fe] = +1.88), and oxygen ([O/Fe] = +1.67). This star alsoexhibits a large enhancement in its neutron-capture elements

Kinetic investigation of a ruthenium metathesis catalyst
The complex [(IMesH2)(PPh2Cy)Cl2RuCHPh] was synthesised and shown to be an active catalyst in ring-closing metathesis of a diallylmalonate. Its phosphine exchange was investigated in C6D6 using magnetisation transfer 31P NMR spectroscopy and it was found to operate via a dissociative mechanism with k353 = 4.1 ± 0.9 s−1, ΔH‡ = 84 ± 10 kJ mol−1 and ΔS‡ = 4 ± 28 J mol−1 K−1.
Removal of trace contaminants using molecularly imprinted polymers
This work was conducted to study the potential of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) for the removal of oestradiol at trace concentrations (1 ppm - 1 ppb). An MIP synthesised with 17 beta-oestradiol as template was compared to non-imprinted polymers (NIP) synthesised under the same conditions but without template, a commercial C18 extraction phase and granulated activated carbon. At 1 ppb, oestr
Optimisation of steam pretreatment of SO2-impregnated mixed softwoods for ethanol production
Pretreatment of mixed softwoods with SO2 impregnation and steam for production of ethanol has been investigated. The optimal conditions, both for sugar yield and ethanol yield, to assess the effect of inhibitors formed in the pretreatment, have been determined. The parameters investigated were: SO2 concentration (1-6% (w/w) dry matter), temperature (190-230 degrees C) and residence time (2-15 min)

Properties of the Pushforward Map on Test Functions, Measures and Distributions
The subject of this thesis is the pushforward map on compactly supported distributions induced by a smooth mapping. Being the adjoint of the natural pullback operation on the class of smooth functions, the pushforward map is always well-defined, and as such it must be regarded as one of the fundamental operations of distribution theory. This thesis has two main aims: The first of these is to give

Hydration of trimethylamine-N-oxide and of dimethyldodecylamine-N-oxide: An ab initio study
Density functional theory (B3LYP) calculations of the hydration of trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) and a surfactant dimethyldodecylamine-N-oxide (DDAO) are reported. Hydrogen-bonded complexes of DDAO with up to three water molecules and of TMAO with up to five water molecules are studied. Interactions of both TMAO and DDAO with water give rise to the binding energies that are much higher than that i

Erythropoietin therapy and cancer related anaemia: updated Swedish recommendations
Due to concerns related to treatment with erythropoietin (EPO) and possible negative effects on tumour control, a workshop was organised by the Medical Products Agency of Sweden with the aim to revise national treatment guidelines if needed. In patients with solid tumours, conflicting results have been reported with respect to tumour control and survival. Until further notice it is therefore recom
Three-dimensional computation of heat transfer from flames between vertical parallel walls
The heat transfer from turbulent diffusion flames between vertical walls has been computed for different wall and burner configurations. The buoyancy-modified k- model was used to study the turbulent characteristics of the flow. The flamelet concept, coupled to a prescribed probability density function, was employed to model the nonpremixed combustion process. With the nucleation, surface growth,
Regioselectivity in the rhodium catalysed 1,4-hydrosilylation of isoprene. Aspects on reaction conditions and ligands
The regioselectivity in the Rh catalysed 1,4-hydrosilylation of isoprene was investigated. Variation of solvents and temperature did not significantly affect the isomer distribution between tail-product (I) and head-product (II). The choice of ligands had the greater influence, where Rh-I-based catalysts with the strong electron withdrawing ligand CO favoured production of isomer II, while Rh-I ca
Immunocytochemical demonstration of contractile cells in the human ovarian follicle
Actin- and myosin-like immunoreactivity is found in cells located in the theca externa of the follicle wall of the human ovary, and corresponding to previously observed myoid cells. The immunocytochemical observation provides direct structural evidence that non-vascular contractile cells are also present in the follicle wall in humans. As expected, perifollicular blood vessels showed a positive im
