Studies on the role of Dally-like during Drosophila development

A cell is constantly subjected to cues from its surroundings in the form of signalling molecules e.g. Wingless (Wg), Insulin-like growth factor (IGF). As a result, important decisions regarding processes like growth, division, differentiation or migration are made. The work presented here attempts to characterise a cell-surface molecule in Drosophila that helps in the reception of some of these si

Catching the Bus in Old Age - Methodological Aspects of Accessibility Assessments in Public Transport

Popular Abstract in Swedish Vardagslivets aktiviteter påverkar vår hälsa och vårt välbefinnande. Idag är aktiviteterna ofta spridda över stora geografiska områden och vi måste resa för att nå aktiviteterna. Resandet blir därmed en viktig del av vår vardag. Att resa är en kedja av händelser och för att nå målet måste alla länkar och dimensioner beaktas, från det att resan planeras till det att måleEngagement in daily activities is central for people’s health and well-being. Today, our activity arenas mostly cover great geographical areas, and to reach different activities we must travel. However, people with functional limitations are sometimes restricted in their travelling. In order to investigate accessibility problems in different travel chains, the overarching objective of this thesis

Purchasing practices of environmentally preferable transport services, Guidance to increased shipper considerations

Behovet av transporter ökar ständigt till följd av exempelvis lokalisering av produktion till låglöneThe logistical activity of transport is one of the largest contributors to several environmental problems. One efficient and effective way to decrease the environmental impact from transports is to implement changes in the logistically related strategies and activities applied, such as the selection of transport suppliers. Consideration of the environmental aspect when purchasing transport servic

Extracellular Matrix Remodelling-Proteoglycan and collagen turnover in arthritis

Synovial membranet innehåller ocksåRheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, inflammatory and systemic disease characterised by joint destruction and pannus formation. To enlarge the understanding how pannus and granulation tissue are formed two animal models were used; one using cartilage wrapped in cotton and implanted into a rat air pouch (AP) and one where mBSA induced arthritis (AIA) was performed. Cell cultures from synovial specime

Hierarchical responses to organic contaminants in aquatic ecotoxicological bioassays: from microcystins to biodegradation

In this thesis I explore the ecotoxicological responses of aquatic organisms at different hierarchical levels to organic contaminants by means of bioassays. The bioassays use novel endpoints or approaches to elucidate the effects of exposure to contaminants and attempt to give mechanistic explanations that could be used to interpret effects at higher hierarchical scales. The sensitivity of popula

On bandwidth-efficient convolutional LDPC codes

A new construction combining low-density parity-check (LDPC) convolutional codes with multilevel coding/modulation is suggested and analyzed. For the case of QPSK and transmission over the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, it is demonstrated that it performs better than an LDPC convolutional code with conventional Gray mapping.

Theoretical Studies of Surface Forces and Phase Equilibria

The interaction between large hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces in aqueous solution is investigated, using Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations and density functional theory. Special attention is devoted to the solvation force and its dependence on the nature of the solvent-solvent and solvent-surface interactions. In order to facilitate simulations of surface forces in aqueous systems, methods
