The scaled reassigned spectrogram adapted for detection and localisation of transient signals

The reassigned spectrogram can be used to improve the readability of a time-frequency representation of a non-stationary and multi-component signal. However for transient signals the reassignment needs to be adapted in order to achieve good localisation of the signal components. One approach is to scale the reassignment. This paper shows that by adapting the shape of the time window used with the

DNA methylation links genetics, fetal environment, and an unhealthy lifestyle to the development of type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is a complex trait with both environmental and hereditary factors contributing to the overall pathogenesis. One link between genes, environment, and disease is epigenetics influencing gene transcription and, consequently, organ function. Genome-wide studies have shown altered DNA methylation in tissues important for glucose homeostasis including pancreas, liver, skeletal muscle, an

Plasma l-arginine levels distinguish pulmonary arterial hypertension from left ventricular systolic dysfunction

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a life-threatening condition, characterized by an imbalance of vasoactive substances and remodeling of pulmonary vasculature. Nitric oxide, formed from l-arginine, is essential for homeostasis and smooth muscle cell relaxation in PAH. Our aim was to compare plasma concentrations of l-arginine, asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), and symmetric dimethylargini

Variability and quasi-decadal changes in the methane budget over the period 2000-2012

Following the recent Global Carbon Project (GCP) synthesis of the decadal methane (CH4) budget over 2000-2012 (Saunois et al., 2016), we analyse here the same dataset with a focus on quasi-decadal and inter-annual variability in CH4 emissions. The GCP dataset integrates results from top-down studies (exploiting atmospheric observations within an atmospheric inverse-modelling framework) and bottom-

Quality of Academic Writing for Engineering Students at Lund University

The development of good writing skills is fundamental not only to publish scientific results, but also to have a deeper understanding of complex subjects. However reports from the Swedish Higher Education Authority from 2012-2015 suggest that engineering students at Lund University have unsatisfactory academic writing skills. Our paper investigates how students of the Faculty of Engineering at Lun

A novel Doppler penalty function for the multitaper Wigner-Ville distribution

This paper proposes a novel Doppler penalty kernel used in the computation of multitapers corresponding to the Wigner-Ville distribution. The resulting multitaper spectrogram will approximately fulfil the time-frequency concentration of the Wigner-Ville distribution but also suppress the cross-terms outside a signal dependent Doppler bandwidth, making the penalty kernel appropriate for linear freqThis paper proposes a novel Doppler penalty kernel used in the computation of multitapers corresponding to the Wigner-Ville distribution. Spatial modelling and simulation for disease surveillance

This thesis addresses the application of spatial approaches to disease surveillance and control from three different aspects. First, temporal trends, geographical distribution and spatial pattern of cardiovascular disease admission rates were explored on a national level in Sweden. Global Moran’s I was used to explore the structure of patterns and Anselin’s local Moran’s I was applied to explore t

Transmission of alcohol use disorder across three generations : a Swedish National Study

Background: While risk for alcohol use disorder (AUD) is correlated in twins, siblings and parent-offspring pairs, we know little of how this syndrome is transmitted across three generations. Method: We examined 685 172 individuals born in Sweden from 1980 to 1990 with four grandparents, and both parents alive in 1980. AUD was assessed in all these individuals from nationwide medical, criminal and

Development of an algorithm for determination of the likelihood of virological failure in HIV-positive adults receiving antiretroviral therapy in decentralized care

Background: Early identification of virological failure (VF) limits occurrence and spread of drug-resistant viruses in patients receiving antiretroviral treatment (ART). Viral load (VL) monitoring is therefore recommended, but capacities to comply with this are insufficient in many low-income countries. Clinical algorithms might identify persons at higher likelihood of VF to allocate VL resources.

Optimizing Automated Peritoneal Dialysis Using an Extended 3-Pore Model

Introduction In the current study, an extended 3-pore model (TPM) is presented and applied to the problem of optimizing automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) with regard to osmotic water transport (UF), small/middle-molecule clearance, and glucose absorption. Methods Simulations were performed for either intermittent APD (IPD) or tidal APD (TPD). IPD was simulated for fill and drain volumes of 2 L,
