A theoretical model describing diffusion of a mixture of different types of ions in pore solution of concrete coupled to moisture transport

A theoretical model is established for diffusion of different types of ions in pore solution of concrete and the coupling to moisture flow and moisture content. Mass exchanges between ions in pore solution and solid hydration products in the concrete are also considered. The basic concepts behind the so-called mixture theory are used. The development of a mass balance principle for ions in pore so

How to identify twins at low risk of spontaneous preterm delivery

Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate transvaginal sonograpbic assessment of cervical length at 23 weeks as a screening test for spontaneous preterm delivery in order to define a cut-off value that could be used to select twin pregnancies at low risk of spontaneous preterm delivery. Methods In a prospective multicenter study of 383 twin pregnancies included before 14 + 6 weeks a cervical

Psychiatric severity and mortality in substance abusers - A 15-year follow-up of drug users

Previous research has shown that most transitions into abstinence happens in the stages of the drug career quickly after the first treatment episode. Mortality is somewhat reduced for patients who become abstinent, but remains high for patients who remain addicted. However, even among substance abusers who become abstinent, mortality is often higher than in the general population. A consecutive sa

Microbial carbon dynamics in nitrogen amended Arctic tundra soil: Measurement and model testing

We examined the responses of grazers (protozoa and nematodes) and their main food sources to low levels of nitrogen (N) fertilisation and applied carbon (C) flux models to our data. Replicate plots of tundra soil adjacent to the Kongsfjorden (Svalbard 78°N) were amended with ammonium and nitrate at concentrations of 1 and 5 kg N ha−1 to assess the impact of anthropogenic N deposition over three su

Prospective open-label study of pharmacokinetics, efficacy and safety of a new 10% liquid intravenous immunoglobulin in patients with hypo- or agammaglobulinemia

Background and Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate the pharmacokinetics, efficacy and safety of a newly developed 10% liquid immunoglobulin preparation in patients with primary immunodeficiency diseases. This new preparation for intravenous use includes three dedicated virus clearance steps in its manufacturing process to ensure a high margin of viral safety. Materials and Methods Thi

High-spin Shell-model States in the Isotope 90Tc

High spin states in the nucleus Tc-90 have been identified for the first time via the fusion evaporation reaction (Ni(Ar,3pn)Tc)-Ni-58-Ar-36-Tc-90, at 149 MeV beam energy. The OSIRIS spectrometer with an additional high purity Ge detector at 162-degrees and several particle detectors were used to measure gammagamma and particle-gammagamma coincidences, directional correlations of oriented states (

Multisjuklighet och polyfarmaci bland äldre

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of co-morbidity and polypharmacy among elderly, and how these variables were associated with the need of help with activities in daily living. The study revealed that co-morbidity and polypharmacy were common, and that both variables were significantly correlated with personal activities in daily living as well as to instrumental activities i

Quantifying the trans influence of triphenylarsine. Crystal and molecular structures of cis-[PtCl2(SMe2)(AsPh3)] and cis-[PtCl2(AsPh3)(2)]center dot CHCl3

Reaction between a mixture of cis-trans-[PtCl2(SMe2)(2)] and 1 eqiv. AsPh3 in chloroform gives Cis-[PtCl2(SMe2)(AsPh3)] crystallizing in P2(1)/n with a = 10.397(2), b = 14.876(3), c = 13.956(3) Angstrom, beta = 90.86(3)degrees and Z = 4. Selected geometrical parameters are Pt-As 2.3531(10), Pt-S 2.262(2), Pt-Cl (trans to S) 2.301(2), Pt-Cl (trans to As) 2.328(2) Angstrom and S-Pt-As 88.85(6), S-Pt

Measurement of diffusion coefficients in gels using holographic laser interferometry

The accuracy and precision of holographic interferometry as a method to measure diffusion coefficients in gels are investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The standard deviations in the experimentally determined diffusion coefficient for ethanol in 4% (w/v) agarose gel were 3.3% for diffusion into the gel and 6.1% for diffusion out of the gel. These are in good agreement with the stand
