α decay of high-spin isomers in N = 84 isotones

The superfluid tunneling model is applied to the calculation of half-lives of the observed α decays in N=84 isotones. Results of our calculations are compared to experimental data on the ground-state α decays along the isotonic chain from 144Nd to 159Re. Good agreement is found. The α decays of the known high-spin isomers in 155Lu, 156Hf, 157Ta, and 158W are also well reproduced, once a reduction

The impact of the glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist liraglutide on the streptozotocin-induced diabetic mouse kidney proteome

In diabetes mellitus (DM), the kidneys are exposed to increased levels of hyperglycemia-induced oxidative stress. Elevated amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS) are believed to provoke ultrastructural changes in kidney tissue and can eventually result in DM late complications such as diabetic nephropathy. While it is reported that glucagon-like peptide 1 receptors (GLP-1R) are present in the ki

A Seemingly Polynomial-Time Algorithm for Optimal Curve Fitting by Segmented Straight Lines

We consider least-squares approximation of a function of one variable by a continuous, piecewise-linear approximand that has a small number of breakpoints. This problem was notably considered by Bellman who proposed an approximate algorithm based on dynamic programming. Many suboptimal approaches have been suggested, but so far, the only exact methods resort to mixed integer programming with super

A global Bayesian sensitivity analysis of the 1d SimSphere soil-vegetation-atmospheric transfer (SVAT) model using Gaussian model emulation

Sensitivity analysis consists of an integral and important validatory check of a computer simulation model before the code is used in performing any kind of analysis operation. The present paper demonstrates the use of a relatively new method and tool for conducting global sensitivity analysis (GSA) for environmental models, providing simultaneously the first GSA study of the widely used 1d soil-v

Remote sensing input for regional to global CO2 flux modelling

The current and future strength of the terrestrial carbon sink has a crucial influence on the expected climate warming on Earth. Usually, Earth Observation (EO) by its very nature focusses on diagnosing the current state of the planet. However, it is possible to use EO products in data assimilation systems to improve not only the diagnosis of the current state, but also the accuracy of future pred

Testing the use of adjoints for parameter estimation in a simple GCM on climate time-scales

The paper presents a feasibility study for a Climate Prediction Data Assimilation System following the methodological approach of the Carbon Cycle Data Assimilation System (CCDAS). The usefulness of accurate gradient information for estimating process parameters of the spectral atmospheric circulation model PUMA on climate time-scales is investigated. Pseudo observations of the long-term mean surf

Impact of terrestrial biosphere carbon exchanges on the anomalous CO2 increase in 2002-2003

Understanding the carbon dynamics of the terrestrial biosphere during climate fluctuations is a prerequisite for any reliable modeling of the climate-carbon cycle feedback. We drive a terrestrial vegetation model with observed climate data to show that most of the fluctuations in atmospheric CO2 are consistent with the modeled shift in the balance between carbon uptake by terrestrial plants and ca

Anxiety and depression in breast cancer patients at start of adjuvant radiotherapy : Relations to age and type of surgery

Using a self-report questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HAD) scale, feelings of anxiety and depression were assessed in 133 breast cancer patients referred for adjuvant radiotherapy following surgical treatment. Eighteen patients (14% had scores indicating morbid anxiety. Significant depression was recorded for only 2 patients (1.5% Severe anxiety was recorded for 10 out of 54 mast

Southern travelling habits with special reference to tumour site in Swedish melanoma patients

Southern travelling habits were recorded for 127 melanoma patients from southern parts of Sweden (the 56th latitude), 55 thyroid cancer patients, 100 non-Hodgkin's patients and 794 healthy controls from the same region. Melanoma patients were found to travel significantly more often south of the 45th latitude, as compared with patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma or thyroid carcinoma (RR = 2.2 for

Search for lepton-flavor violation in different-flavor, high-mass final states in pp collisions at s =13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search is performed for a heavy particle decaying into different-flavor, dilepton pairs (eμ, eτ or μτ), using 36.1 fb-1 of proton-proton collision data at s=13 TeV collected in 2015-2016 by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No excesses over the Standard Model predictions are observed. Bayesian lower limits at the 95% credibility level are placed on the mass of a Z′ boson, the mass

Intra-seasonal variation of injury patterns among German Bundesliga soccer players

OBJECTIVE: High fluctuations in injury-risk during the playing season in soccer have been reported. As seasons are structured in periods with homogenous loads and intensities, we investigated injury-risk over season periods, contrarily to previous studies adopting a month-based approach.DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 2.METHODS: Incidence-rate ratios (IRRs) for match and training injuries

Measurement of dijet azimuthal decorrelations in pp collisions at s =8 TeV with the ATLAS detector and determination of the strong coupling

A measurement of the rapidity and transverse momentum dependence of dijet azimuthal decorrelations is presented, using the quantity RΔφ. The quantity RΔφ specifies the fraction of the inclusive dijet events in which the azimuthal opening angle of the two jets with the highest transverse momenta is less than a given value of the parameter Δφmax. The quantity RΔφ is measured in proton-proton collisi

Search for lepton-flavor-violating decays of the Z boson into a τ lepton and a light lepton with the ATLAS detector

Direct searches for lepton flavor violation in decays of the Z boson with the ATLAS detector at the LHC are presented. Decays of the Z boson into an electron or muon and a hadronically decaying τ lepton are considered. The searches are based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions collected by the ATLAS detector in 2015 and 2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb-1 at a cen
