Measurements of medial temporal lobe atrophy for prediction of Alzheimer's disease in subjects with mild cognitive impairment
Our aim was to compare the predictive accuracy of 4 different medial temporal lobe measurements for Alzheimer's disease (AD) in subjects with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Manual hippocampal measurement, automated atlas-based hippocampal measurement, a visual rating scale (MTA-score), and lateral ventricle measurement were compared. Predictive accuracy for AD 2 years after baseline was assessed
Tensile Strength After Closure of Mesenteric Gaps in Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass: Three Techniques Tested in a Porcine Model.
BACKGROUND: Internal hernias occur frequently after laparoscopic gastric bypass. We have found no data on the relative strength of the various techniques available for closing these defects. The present study was performed to obtain such data to form a theoretical basis for clinical studies. METHODS: Six piglets were operated laparoscopically and four loops of small bowel created in each. These me
Comparison between transcranial Doppler and coulter counter for detection of lipid micro embolization from mediastinal shed blood reinfusion during cardiac surgery.
INTRODUCTION: Lipid micro embolization (LME) from re-transfused shed blood has been postulated to be a potential reason for short- and long-term cognitive dysfunction after cardiac surgery. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate if transcranial Doppler (TCD) has the capacity to detect LME. METHODS: Thirteen patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass surgery were investigated. Each patie
Measurement of the top quark charge in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector
A measurement of the top quark electric charge is carried out in the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider using 2.05 fb(-1) of data at a centre-of-mass energy of 7TeV. In units of the elementary electric charge, the top quark charge is determined to be 0.64 +/- 0.02 (stat.) +/- 0.08 (syst.) from the charges of the top quark decay products in single lepton t (t) over bar candidate events.
Secular trends of obesity prevalence in Chinese children from 1985 to 2010: Urban-rural disparity.
To examine the trend of urban-rural disparity in obesity prevalence among Chinese children from 1985 to 2010.
Positive patch test reactions to oxidized limonene: exposure and relevance
Background. R-Limonene is a common fragrance terpene found in domestic and industrial products. R-Limonene autoxidizes on air exposure, and the oxidation products can cause contact allergy. In a recent multicentre study, 5.2% (range 2.3-12.1%) of 2900 patients showed a positive patch test reaction to oxidized R-limonene. Objective. To study the exposure to limonene among consecutive dermatitis pat

Tapasin Facilitation of Natural HLA-A and -B Allomorphs Is Strongly Influenced by Peptide Length, Depends on Stability, and Separates Closely Related Allomorphs.
Despite an abundance of peptides inside a cell, only a small fraction is ultimately presented by HLA-I on the cell surface. The presented peptides have HLA-I allomorph-specific motifs and are restricted in length. So far, detailed length studies have been limited to few allomorphs. Peptide-HLA-I (pHLA-I) complexes of different allomorphs are qualitatively and quantitatively influenced by tapasin t
Dual learning – a challenge for higher education in the new landscape of governance
In many countries, practice-oriented programs have been recast as university programs, fueling debate on the purpose of higher education. We highlight two ways of talking about the challenges for higher education we think are already familiar to readers. We label them ‘political-worry discourse’ and ‘academic-worry discourse’. We argue for a third position that gives due recognition to the turn in
Effect of different asthma treatments on risk of cold-related exacerbations
Common colds often trigger asthma exacerbations. The present study compared cold-related severe exacerbations during budesonide/formoterol maintenance and reliever therapy, and different regimens of maintenance inhaled corticosteroids (ICS), with or without long-acting beta(2)-agonists (LABA), and with as-needed short-acting beta(2)-agonists (SABA) or LABA. Reported colds and severe exacerbations
The Patient's View of Nursing Care after Hip Fracture.
Background: The pathway for patients with a hip fracture described in this study is a fast track. Many studies have focused on prevention of various complications but, so far, the patient's view of nursing care has not been highlighted. Aim: The aim of the study is to illuminate the patient's view on nursing care when treated for a hip fracture. Method: Ten patients were interviewed. A content
"Identifying the hospitalised patient in crisis"-A consensus conference on the afferent limb of Rapid Response Systems
Background: Most reports of Rapid Response Systems (RRS) focus on the efferent, response component of the system, although evidence suggests that improved vital sign monitoring and recognition of a clinical crisis may have outcome benefits. There is no consensus regarding how best to detect patient deterioration or a clear description of what constitutes patient monitoring. Methods: A consensus co
Bedside Diagnosis of Rippling Muscle Disease in Cav3 P.A46T Mutation Carriers
Thirty-nine members, ages 1 to 67 years, of a Swedish family with rippling muscle disease (RMD) were investigated to assess genotype phenotype correlations. Clinical, neurophysiological, and muscle morphological examinations were performed. Genetic analysis was performed in 38 individuals. Twenty-three patients had percussion-induced muscle mounding (PIMM) and percussion-induced rapid contractions
Late effects of low blood lead concentrations in children on school performance and cognitive functions.
Although it is known that lead is a neurotoxin that negatively impacts cognitive functions at low blood concentrations (B-Pb), little is known about the impact of early exposure on later cognitive functions.

Structure-activity relationship studies for Cystapep 1 and its analogues
Combining functional features of whole-grain barley and legumes for dietary reduction of cardiometabolic risk: a randomised cross-over intervention in mature women.
The usefulness of dietary strategies against cardiometabolic risk is increasingly being acknowledged. Legumes and whole grains can modulate risk markers associated with cardiometabolic diseases, but their possible additive/synergistic actions are unknown. The objective of the present study was to assess, in healthy subjects, the effect of a diet including specific whole-grain barley products and l
Taxonomy and phylogeny of the Caloplaca cerina group in Europe
Using ITS nrDNA sequence data, the Caloplaca cerina group (Teloschistaceae) is defined here as a monophyletic, but internally richly branched lineage. The group is also characterized by a combination of morphological and anatomical characters. Its internal lineages are supported by phenotypic characters in addition to ecology and distribution. Within the large C. cerina group, we have found at lea
