A 5GHz 90-nm CMOS all digital phase-locked loop

An all digital phase-locked loop (ADPLL) has been implemented in a 90-nm CMOS process. It uses a phase-frequency detector (PFD) connected to two time-to-digital converters (TDC). To save power the TDCs use delay line cells with uneven delay time. During frequency acquisition an automatic tuning bank controller selects active bank of the digitally controlled oscillator (DCO), which features three s

Inherited genetic susceptibility to multiple myeloma

Although the familial clustering of multiple myeloma (MM) supports the role of inherited susceptibility, only recently has direct evidence for genetic predisposition been demonstrated. A meta-analysis of two genome-wide association (GWA) studies has identified single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) localising to a number of genomic regions that are robustly associated with MM risk. In this review,

Variability of important vital rates challenges the demographic buffering hypothesis

Selection is assumed to eliminate life-histories showing high variability in vital rates that have the greatest influence on population performance. Therefore, an inverse variability-importance relationship of vital rates is believed to be a universal pattern for diverse life-histories. We tested for such a relationship using multi-year demographic data on a large number of populations of two pere

Nonequilibrium Green's Function Model for Simulation of Quantum Cascade Laser Devices Under Operating Conditions

A simulation scheme based on nonequilibrium Green's functions for biased periodic semiconductor heterostructure devices is presented in detail. The implementation can determine current and optical gain both for small and large optical fields. Specific results for superlattices, quantum cascade lasers, and quantum cascade detectors are shown which demonstrate the capabilities of the approach.

Christian Manliness For Women? Contradictions of Christian youth organization in early 20th-century Sweden

Evangelical revivalism attracted large numbers of young adherents in early 20th-century Sweden. In this article we discuss what happened when Christian youth societies for men and women merged into mixed societies. The decline of the ideal of the single-sex youth society meant that a decidedly female form of religious organization disappeared. We argue, however, that the change also entailed cauti

Osteoporosis in elderly women; Bone traits, fracture and the PTH gene complex

Background: Fragility fractures are a major health problem world wide and the numbers are growing due to ageing populations. Early identification of individuals at risk for osteoporosis and fracture, enabling preventive measures and treatment is essential. Bone strength is partly dependent on lifestyle but genetic factors account for approximately 70-80%. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is the key regul

Intracranial manifestations in SAPHO syndrome: the first case report in literature.

A 41-year-old woman with SAPHO syndrome presented with numbness of her left arm followed by a generalized seizure. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed a small ring enhancing lesion in the right parietal lobe with adjacent meningeal thickening and enhancement. Surgical removal and histopathology showed evidence of severe chronic sterile inflammation and no malig

Control and Estimation in Force Feedback Sensors

The principle of force feedback is to design a sensor as a feedback system where the action of the measured variable is compensated by a force generated by feedback. Force feedback has contributed significantly to improve the quality of sensors. A characteristic feature of MEMS devices is that they are subject to random disturbances, such as Brownian motion, Johnson-Nyquist noise, and tunneling no

Solution and structural studies of the Cd(II) - Aconitate system

The complexing ability of the binary system trans-aconitic acid (H3L) with regard to Cd(II) and the crystal structures of the binary system Cd(II)-(H3L), [Cd3L2(H2O)(6)] n(1) and ternary systems of Cd(II)-(H3L)-Lewis base [Lewis base = 1,10-phenanthroline (2) and 2,2'-bipyridine (3)] have been determined. Compound I is a rare binodal four-connected three-dimensional (3D) metal-organic framework po

Measurements of heavy-quark production via single leptons at PHENIX

The measurement of single leptons from the semi-leptonic decay of heavy-flavor hadrons has long been a means for studying heavy-quark production. PHENIX has measured single muons in pp collisions at forward rapidity and single electrons in both pp and AuAu collisions at mid-rapidity at . The most recent PHENIX single lepton results are presented in the context of state-of-the-art pQCD calculations

Developing internal crisis communication: New practices for communication professionals

Purpose - The article has two major purposes. The first purpose is to examine the roles and practices of communication professionals in relation to internal aspects of crisis communication. The second purpose is to suggest new roles and practices for communication professionals that will enable a strategic approach to internal crisis communication. This article is based on empirical material from

Symptoms and aspects on eosinophil activity in allergic rhinitis

Allergic rhinitis is a major atopic disease. Even if much is known about the pathophysiology of this condition, and despite the fact that good treatments are available, there is a need for new treatment options, particularly for such aiming at new targets and reduced side effects. Recruitment and activation of eosinophils is a key feature of allergic rhinitis. Eosinophils have different activatio

Housing and Health: Very Old People with Self-Reported Parkinson's Disease versus Controls.

Objectives. To explore whether aspects of housing and health among very old people with self-reported Parkinson's disease (PD) differ from matched controls. Methods. Data from the ENABLE-AGE Survey Study were used to identify people with self-reported PD (n = 20) and three matched controls/individual (n = 60). The matching criteria were age (mean = 82 years), sex, country, and type of housing. The
