Thermodynamics and kinetics of a Go(o)over-bar proteinlike heteropolymer model with two-state folding characteristics

We present results of Monte Carlo computer simulations of a coarse-grained hydrophobic-polar G (o) over bar -like heteropolymer model and discuss thermodynamic properties and kinetics of an exemplified heteropolymer, exhibiting two-state folding behavior. It turns out that general, characteristic folding features of realistic proteins with a single free-energy barrier can also be observed in this

Actions seen as demanding in patients with severe dementia during one year of intervention. Comparison with controls

Behaviours, viewed by nurses as demanding, performed by patients with severe dementia were investigated during one year of intervention. Supervised implementation of individually planned care and systematic clinical supervision were implemented on one experimental ward (EW) while another ward (CW) served as control. Each ward had 11 patients. At baseline and after 6 and 12 months of intervention s

Telomere-associated repeats in Chironomus form discrete subfamilies generated by gene conversion

In dipteran insects the most distal telomere-associated DNA known to exist consists of long, complex tandem repeats. We have classified the 340-bp tandemly arranged repeats in Chironomus pallidivittatus. The repeats are distributed in a small number of subfamilies. One type of the repeat has the character of a master unit from which other main units can be derived usually by simple changes. The de

13C imaging-a new diagnostic platform.

he evolution of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been astounding since the early 1980s, and a broad range of applications has emerged. To date, clinical imaging of nuclei other than protons has been precluded for reasons of sensitivity. However, with the recent development of hyperpolarization techniques, the signal from a given number of nuclei can be increased as much as 100,000 times, suffi

A certified plasmid reference material for the standardisation of BCR-ABL1 mRNA quantification by real time quantitative PCR.

Serial quantification of BCR-ABL1 mRNA is an important therapeutic indicator in chronic myeloid leukemia, but there is substantial variation in results reported by different laboratories. To improve comparability, an internationally accepted plasmid certified reference material (CRM) was developed according to ISO Guide 34:2009. Fragments of BCR-ABL1 (e14a2 mRNA fusion), BCR and GUSB transcripts w

Reconstruction of attosecond electron wave packets using quantum state holography

We present a method for performing quantum state holography, with which we completely characterize the amplitude and phase of an attosecond electron wave packet. Our approach is an extension of a recent publication [J. Mauritsson et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 053001 (2010)] in which we demonstrated experimentally that the energies and amplitudes of an attosecond electron wave packet can be charact

Extending the time range of apatite (U-Th)/He thermochronometry in slowly cooled terranes: Palaeozoic to Cenozoic exhumation history of southeast Sweden

The use of (U-Th)/He thermochronometry in old slowly cooled terranes has long been debated. Hence, studies of natural setting are needed to verify the expected diffusivity behaviour of helium. Our results demonstrate that the (U-Th)/He method can be applicable to samples older than 200 Ma, and that available helium diffusion models can reproduce the results obtained from the age-vs.-depth trends.

The influence of production systems on self-reported arousal, sleepiness, physical exertion and fatigue-consequences of increasing mechanization

The present study examined the capability of a real-time assessment routine to sort out the individual impact of three production systems on psychological activation as measured by the Stress/Energy Inventory, Karolinska Sleepiness Scale, Borg's CR-10 Perceived Exertion scale, and the Swedish Occupational Fatigue Inventory. Sixteen women between the ages of 26 and S7 years (mean 43 years) rotated

Competition between transglycosylation and hydrolysis in almond beta-glucosidase-catalyzed conversion of p-nitrophenyl-beta-D-glucoside in monophasic water/alcohol mixtures

Almond beta-glucosidase was used to catalyze the transglycosylation of p-nitrophenyl-beta-D-glucoside to alkyl glucosides, with hydrolysis to glucose as a side reaction. The conversions were carried out in alcohols with varying water contents below water saturation. Both the total reaction rate and the ratio between the transglycosylation and hydrolysis increased with increasing water activity, an

Identification of ABR-215050 as lead second generation quinoline-3-carboxamide anti-angiogenic agent for the treatment of prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND Linomide, Figure 1, produces robust and consistent in vivo growth inhibition of prostate cancer models via its anti-angiogenic activity and inhibition of autoimmune encephalomyelitis models of multiple sclerosis (MS). MS clinical trials were discontinued because of unacceptable toxicity, due to dose-dependent induction of proinflammation. METHODS Therefore, linomide analogs were initia

Novel flavonoids of Thelypteris torresiana

In our continuing research on cytotoxic components from the Formosan pteridophyte Thelypteris torresiana (GAUD.) ALSTONONE, two new compounds, a novel flavonoid, flavotorresin (1), and a flavonoid diglycoside, multi-florin C (2), along with five known compounds, were isolated. The structural elucidation was established on the basis of spectroscopic data analysis. The possible biosynthetic pathway

Sephadex-induced granulomatous alveolitis in rat: effects of antigen manipulation

A granulomatous alveolitis, with multinuclear cell formation combined with an eosinophilic peribronchiolitis, was achieved in rats by intratracheal administration of sephadex beads (G-200, Pharmacia, Sweden). The pattern of inflammation and the degree of postgranulomatous fibrosis were substantially dampened when the particles were dispersed by ultrasonification. The animals were analyzed with bro

Aggregation Behavior of Bovine kappa- and beta-Casein Studied with Small Angle Neutron Scattering, Light Scattering, and Cryogenic Transmission Electron Microscopy

In the native bovine casein micelle the calcium sensitive caseins (alpha(S1)-, alpha(S2)- and beta-casein) sequester amorphous calcium phosphate in nanometer-sized clusters, whereas the calcium-insensitive K-casein limits the growth of the micelle. In this paper, we further investigate the self-association of kappa- and beta-casein, which are two of the key proteins that control the substructure o

Purkinje cell activity during classical conditioning with different conditional stimulus explains central tenet of Rescorla-Wagner model.

A central tenet of Rescorla and Wagner's model of associative learning is that the reinforcement value of a paired trial diminishes as the associative strength between the presented stimuli increases. Despite its fundamental importance to behavioral sciences, the neural mechanisms underlying the model have not been fully explored. Here, we present findings that, taken together, can explain why a s

Reduced expression of angiotensin II and angiotensin receptor type 1 and type 2 in resistance arteries from nasal lesions in granulomatosis with polyangiitis (Wegener's granulomatosis).

Objectives: Angiotensin II (ANGII) is involved in vessel inflammation and is important in the development of cardiovascular disorders such as atherosclerosis. During active disease, patients with granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA; Wegener's granulomatosis) have accelerated atherosclerosis and ANGII inhibitors are recommended to these patients to reduce atherosclerosis. We assessed the hypothes

Carbon dioxide rebreathing with the anaesthetic conserving device, AnaConDa

The anaesthetic conserving device (ACD) AnaConDa was developed to allow the reduced use of inhaled agents by conserving exhaled agent and allowing rebreathing. Elevated has been observed in patients when using this ACD, despite tidal volume compensation for the larger apparatus dead space. The aim of the present study was to determine whether CO2, like inhaled anaesthetics, adsorbs to the ACD duri
