Down-regulation of the strawberry Bet v 1-homologous allergen in concert with the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway in colorless strawberry mutant

Proteomic screening of strawberry (Fragaria ananassa) yielded a 58% success rate in protein identification in spite of the fact that no genomic sequence is available for this species. This was achieved by a combination of MALDI-MS/MS de novo sequencing of double-derivatized peptides and indel-tolerant searching against local protein databases built on both EST and full-length nucleotide sequences.

Women's experiences of hassles and uplifts in their everyday patterns of occupations

The aim of this study was to investigate experiences of hassles and uplifts among women. One hundred working mothers were interviewed using the Target Complaints instrument. Content analysis, resulting in both qualitative categories and quantitative variables, was used. Working mothers' hassles were mainly generated by their social, temporal and doing contexts and illustrate the importance of cons

Enhanced benefit of increasing interferon beta-1a dose and frequency in relapsing multiple sclerosis - The EVIDENCE study

Background: The EVIDENCE (Evidence of Interferon Dose-Response: European North American Comparative Efficacy) Study demonstrated that patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) who initiate interferon beta-la therapy with 44 μ g 3 times weekly (TIW) were less likely to have a relapse or activity on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) compared with those who initiate therapy at a dosage of 30 μ g 1 time we

Sex and muscle structural lipids in obese subjects - an impact on insulin action?

Background Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (LCPUFA) especially the n-3-FA of skeletal muscle phospholipids may facilitate insulin action, whereas saturated and trans-FA act oppositely. Community studies show that non-diabetic weight matched obese men and women display similar insulin resistance, despite the fact that an android fat distribution is detrimental to insulin action. The increased

Clinical manifestations of atherosclerosis in an elderly population are related to plasma neopterin, NGAL and endothelin-1, but not to Chlamydia pneumoniae serology.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory mediators secreted by leukocytes are implicated in atherogenesis. Chlamydia (C.) pneumoniae infection has been suggested as a trigger of this process. We investigated relationships between C. Pneumoniae serology, inflammatory mediators and symptomatic cardiovascular disease in old age. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study at baseline with a prospective 4 year follow-up, int

Improved HPLC method for carbohydrate-deficient transferrin in serum

Background: There is need for a reference method for transferrin glycoforms in serum to which routine immunologic methods for the alcohol marker carbohydrate-deficient transferrin (CDT) can be traceable. We describe an improved HPLC method for transferrin glycoforms. Methods: Transferrin was iron-saturated by mixing the serum with ferric nitrilotriacetic acid, and lipoproteins were precipitated wi

Short-chain fatty acid formation in the hindgut of rats fed oligosaccharides varying in monomeric composition, degree of polymerisation and solubility

The contents of short-chain fatty acids were investigated in rats fed lactitol, lactulose and four fructo-oligosaccharides of different degree of polymerisation and solubility. Fructo-oligosaccharides with a low degree of polymerisation (2-8) generated the highest levels of butyric acid all along the hindgut, whereas fructo-oligosaccharides with a high degree of polymerisation (10-60) generated th

This study investigated the role of P fimbriae in colonization of Escherichia coli, host response, and bacterial persistence in humans. Human volunteers were inoculated intravesically with the nonadherent ABU isolate E. coli 83972 and with P fimbriated transformants of the same strain. During the following 24 h all urine samples, and thereafter daily samples, were collected for urine culture, anal

Treatment and prevention of acute bleedings in von Willebrand disease--efficacy and safety of Wilate, a new generation von Willebrand factor/factor VIII concentrate.

For many patients with von Willebrand disease (VWD), the replacement therapy with von Willebrand factor (VWF)/factor VIII (FVIII) concentrates is the treatment of choice. To evaluate clinical efficacy, safety and tolerability of Wilate, an albumin-free VWF/FVIII concentrate with a ratio of the two haemostatic moieties of approximately 1 to 1, a prospective clinical programme has been designed. The

Risk factors and treatment at recurrent stroke onset: Results from the recurrent stroke quality and epidemiology (RESQUE) study

Background: Much effort has been made to study first-ever stroke patients. However, recurrent stroke has not been investigated as extensively. It is unclear which risk factors dominate, and whether adequate secondary prevention has been provided to patients who suffer from recurrent stroke. Also, the different types of recurrent stroke need further evaluation. Methods: The study included patients

Effects of carbon substrate enrichment and DOC concentration on biodegradation of PAHs in soil

Aims: Two common reasons to explain slow environmental biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), namely lack of appropriate carbon sources for microbial growth and limited bioavailability of PAHs, were tested in a laboratory bioassay using a creosote-contaminated soil. Methods and Results: The soil, containing a total of 8 mg g(-1) of 16 PAHs, was sieved and incubated in bottles f

Haemophilia B carrier detection by factor IX:C analysis; no impact of the type of mutation or severity of disorder

Haemophilia B, an X-linked recessive bleeding disorder characterized by lack or deficiency of factor IX, has been shown to be caused by any of a variety of DNA abnormalities (partial or total deletions, nonsense or missense mutations). Since in most countries carrier detection is based on factor IX coagulant activity (FIX:C) assay, this study was designed to determine whether carriers' FIX:C value

Role of fibroblast growth factor 8 in growth and progression of hormonal cancer

Hormonal cancers such as breast and prostate cancer arise from steroid hormone-regulated tissues. In addition to breast and prostate cancer hormonal regulation has also a role in endometrial, ovarian, testis and thyroid carcinomas. The effects of estrogens, androgens and progestagens on tumor growth are largely mediated by paracrine and autocrine target molecules which include growth factors and g
