Effects of body fatness and physical activity on cardiovascular risk: risk prediction using the bioelectrical impedance method.

Aims: To explore the effects of body fat percentage (BF%) on incidence of and mortality from cardiovascular disease (CVD) and to study the cardio-protective effect of physical activity in relation to BF%. Methods: A total of 26,942 men and women, aged 45-73 years, without history of CVD were followed up for incidence of coronary events (CE), ischaemic stroke, and CVD mortality over seven years in

Survival of full-thickness retinal xenotransplants without immunosuppression

Background: A study was carried out to explore the survival of xenogeneic full-thickness retinal transplants in the subretinal space of hosts without immunosuppression. Methods: Nine adult rabbits received a complete immature rat neuroretina in the subretinal space. No immunosuppression was given, and the animals were followed up for 15 or 34 days. The eyes were then examined histologically with h

Insulin induced phosphorylation and activation of the cGMP-inhibited cAMP phosphodiesterase in human platelets

Insulin induced phosphorylation and activation of the cGMP inhibited cAMP phosphodiesterase (cGI-PDE) in human platelets were demonstrated after isolation of the enzyme with specific polyclonal cGI-PDE antibodies. The demonstration of this insulin effect required suppression of basal cGI-PDE phosphorylation, through the use of the protein kinase inhibitor H-7 (1-(5-isoquinolinylsulfonyl)-2-methylp

Integrated Control and Scheduling

The report gives a state-of-the-art survey of the field of integrated control and scheduling. Subtopics discussed are implementation and scheduling of periodic control loops, scheduling under overload, control and scheduling co-design, dynamic task adaptation, feedback scheduling, and scheduling of imprecise calculations. The report also presents the background, motivation, and research topics in

Myelography in the late postoperative period in patients subjected to anterior cervical decompression and fusion

During a 13 year period, 286 patients with cervical disc herniation and/or spondylotic spurs, were subjected to anterior decompression and vertebral interbody fusion with autologous bone. Twenty patients were re-admitted in the late postoperative period due to recurrent radicular symptoms and/or signs of myelopathy. In these patients myelography was performed again. In 14 patients spinal cord comp

Impact of combinations of antineoplastic drugs on intestinal microflora in 9 patients with leukaemia.

The impact of antineoplastic drugs on the intestinal microflora was studied in 9 patients with acute leukaemia during chemotherapy and in 5 patients also during chemotherapy-induced neutropenia. Quantitative and qualitative microbiological analyses of faecal samples obtained before and during chemotherapy showed significantly increased counts of Bacteroides spp. in 3/9 patients and, during neutrop

New scale factors for harmonic vibrational frequencies using the B3LYP density functional method with the triple-xi basis set 6-311+G(d,p)

We have calculated optimal frequency scaling factors for the B3LYP/ 6-311+G(d,p) method for fundamental vibrational frequencies on the basis of a set of 125 molecules. Using the new scaling factor, the vibrational frequencies calculated with the triple-zeta basis set 6-311+G(d,p) give significantly better accuracy than those calculated with the double-zeta 6-31G(d) basis set. Scale factors were al

Cellular and behavioural effects of the adenosine A2a receptor antagonist KW-6002 in a rat model of l-DOPA-induced dyskinesia.

We have examined the ability of KW-6002, an adenosine A2a antagonist, to modulate the dyskinetic effects of l-DOPA in 6-hydroxydopamine-lesioned rats. In animals rendered dyskinetic by a previous course of l-DOPA treatment, KW-6002 did not elicit any abnormal involuntary movements on its own, but failed to reduce the severity of dyskinesia when coadministered with l-DOPA. A second experiment was u

Testing similarity measures with continuous and discrete protein models

There are many ways to define the distance between two protein structures, thus assessing their similarity. Here, we investigate and compare the properties of five different distance measures, including the standard root-mean-square deviation (cRMSD). The performance of these measures is studied from different perspectives with two different protein models, one continuous and the other discrete. U

Time Varying Parameters in Exchange Rate Models

This thesis consists of five papers on different aspects of parametervariation in some common exchange rate models. The first paper investigates the stability in the real exchange rate, witch is equivalent to purchasing power parity (PPP). In recent empirical literature on purchasing power parity, the focus has been on the stationarity of real exchange rates, instead of strict constancy. Earlier st

Measurement of beauty production at HERA using events with muons and jets

A measurement of the beauty production cross section in ep collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 319 GeV is presented. The data were collected with the H1 detector at the HERA collider in the years 1999-2000. Events are selected by requiring the presence of jets and muons in the final state. Both the long lifetime and the large mass of b-flavoured hadrons are exploited to identify events contai

Studies of water vapor transport and sorption in wood

This thesis deals with the evaluation of measurements of water vapor transport and sorption in wood. It mainly concerns measurements of the weight response of a sample after a step change in relative humidity. The thesis consists of an introduction and eight papers. The eight papers have the following contents: 1. A description of the instrumentation and its performance characteristics. 2. Some f
