Transverse resonant properties of strained gold nanowires

In this work, resonant and elastic properties of single crystal gold nanowires have been studied through classical molecular dynamics simulations. The considered nanowires have perfect square cross sections and are oriented with the [100] direction along the wire axis and with {100} side surfaces. Three different sizes were simulated; 4.08×4.08 nm2, 5.71×5.71 nm2, and 7.34×7.34 nm2 cross sectional

Obstetric outcome after in vitro fertilization with single or double embryo transfer

BACKGROUND: IVF children, including singletons, are known to have a poorer obstetric outcome than children born after spontaneous conception. With a broad introduction of single embryo transfer (SET), this scenario might change. This study compares the obstetric outcome after IVF with SET, elective SET (eSET), non elective SET (non-eSET) and double embryo transfer (DET) with outcomes in the genera

Interannual variation in land-use intensity enhances grassland multidiversity

Although temporal heterogeneity is a well-accepted driver of biodiversity, effects of interannual variation in land-use intensity (LUI) have not been addressed yet. Additionally, responses to land use can differ greatly among different organisms; therefore, overall effects of land-use on total local biodiversity are hardly known. To test for effects of LUI (quantified as the combined intensity of

Psychiatric treatment in men with prostate cancer - Results from a Nation-wide, population-based cohort study from PCBaSe Sweden

Aim: To explore whether the self-reported psychological distress among men with prostate cancer was to the extent that it required psychiatric treatment. Methods: PCBaSe Sweden, a merged database based on the National Prostate Cancer Register including 97% of all prostate cancers registered as well as age-matched controls. We calculated relative risks and 95% confidence intervals to compare risks

Local treatments for metastases of renal cell carcinoma: a systematic review

Local treatment of metastases such as metastasectomy or radiotherapy remains controversial in the treatment of metastatic renal cell carcinoma. To investigate the benefits and harms of various local treatments, we did a systematic review of all types of comparative studies on local treatment of metastases from renal cell carcinoma in any organ. Interventions included metastasectomy, radiotherapy m

Benzochromenes from the roots of Bourreria pulchra

Two new benzochromenes, (6,6-dimethyl-2-methoxy-6H-benzo[c]chromen-9-yl)methanol (1), and 2-methoxy-6,6-dimethyl-6H-benzo[c]chromen-9-carbaldehyde (2), together with several already known metabolites, were isolated from the root extract of Bourreria pulchra (Boraginaceae). The structures of 1 and 2 were established on the basis of their spectroscopic data. Both were assayed for in vitro antiprotoz

Evaporative Annular Flow in Micro/Minichannels: A Simple Heat Transfer Model

The present study collected and analyzed flow boiling data points which fall in the annular flow regime with an increasing heat transfer coefficient h - vapor quality x trend (h increases with increasing x) in small diameter channels (0.1 < dh < 3.1 mm) for halogenated refrigerants, CO2 and water. In this annular flow regime, heat transfer coefficient also depends on both heat flux and mass flux.

Greenhouse gases from wastewater treatment - A review of modelling tools.

Nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide and methane are greenhouse gases (GHG) emitted from wastewater treatment that contribute to its carbon footprint. As a result of the increasing awareness of GHG emissions from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), new modelling, design, and operational tools have been developed to address and reduce GHG emissions at the plant-wide scale and beyond. This paper reviews t

Quest for Missing Proteins: Update 2015 on Chromosome-Centric Human Proteome Project

This paper summarizes the recent activities of the Chromosome-Centric Human Proteome Project (CHPP) consortium, which develops new technologies to identify yet-to-be annotated proteins (termed “missing proteins”) in biological samples that lack sufficient experimental evidence at the protein level for confident protein identification. The C-HPP also aims to identify new protein forms that may be c

Developing a Quality Culture through the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

The critical features of a strategy to promote improved teaching and learning are explored in this article from a socio-cultural perspective in a research-intensive institution. The paper presents theoretical underpinnings and implications as well as an empirical case study of such a strategy and its seemingly successful results. The strategy builds on scholarship of teaching and learning beyond i

Long-term survival in young and middle-aged Hodgkin lymphoma patients in Sweden 1992-2009 - trends in cure proportions by clinical characteristics.

Trends in Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) survival among patients treated outside of clinical trials provide real-world benchmark estimates of prognosis and help identify patient subgroups for targeted trials. In a Swedish population-based cohort of 1947 HL patients diagnosed 1992-2009 at ages 18-59 years, we estimated relative survival (RS), cure proportions (CP) and median survival times using flexible pa

Mutations in TERT promoter and FGFR3 and telomere length in bladder cancer

Mutations in the promoter of the telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) and fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3) genes constitute the most recurrent somatic alterations in urothelial carcinoma of bladder. In this study, we screened DNA from 327 urothelial bladder carcinomas from well-documented patients, with different stages and grades and known TERT promoter mutational status, for FGFR3

Interactions between hydrophobically modified starch and egg yolk proteins in solution and emulsions

In this paper we study the interaction between starch which has been hydrophobically modified, with octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA), and alpha-beta-livetin, which is the water soluble fraction of egg yolk. The modification of the starch renders it surface active and also incorporates a carboxyl group to the starch, which can be negatively charged. The interaction was studied both in solution and

Experimental and Analytical Comparisons of Tissue Dielectric Constant (TDC) and Bioimpedance Spectroscopy (BIS) in Assessment of Early Arm Lymphedema in Breast Cancer Patients after Axillary Surgery and Radiotherapy

Background: Early diagnosis of breast cancer treatment-related lymphedema (BCRL) is of great importance for longstanding treatment results. Tissue dielectric constant (TDC) and bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) both have a potential for early diagnosis, but have not been compared. Methods and Results: One hundred women, treated for breast cancer with breast surgery, axillary dissection, and radiothe

Characterization of Sialic Acid Index of Plasma Apolipoprotein J and Phosphatidylethanol During Alcohol Detoxification-A Pilot Study.

Background: Apolipoprotein J (ApoJ) is a component of plasma high-density lipoproteins. Previous studies have shown progressive recovery of ApoJ sialic acid content with increased duration of alcohol abstinence. Therefore, the sialic acid index of plasma apolipoprotein J (SIJ) seems to be a promising alcohol biomarker. Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) is a direct ethanol metabolite and has recently attr

Longitudinal Associations between Survival in Alzheimer's Disease and Cholinesterase Inhibitor Use, Progression, and Community-Based Services.

Background/Aims: Factors including rate of disease progression, different aspects of cholinesterase inhibitor (ChEI) treatment, and use of community-based services might affect the longitudinal outcome of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Whether these factors alter life expectancy in AD is unclear. We therefore examined the association between long-term ChEI therapy and survival. Methods: The present stu

Long-term Results of Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy; A Comparison Between CRT-Pacemakers Versus Primary Prophylactic CRT-Defibrillators.

Cardiac resynchronization Therapy (CRT) with or without a defibrillator has a positive effect on mortality and morbidity for patients with heart failure. However, comparisons between CRT-Defibrillators (CRT-D) and CRT-Pacemakers (CRT-P) are relatively scarce outside the clinical trial setting. This study aimed to assess baseline characteristics in relation to long-term prognosis in patients treate
