Caregiving time costs and trade-offs: Gender differences in Sweden, the UK, and Canada

Population ageing is putting pressure on pension systems and health care services, creating an imperative to extend working lives. At the same time, policy makers throughout Europe and North America are trying to expand the use of home care over institutional services. Thus, the number of people combining caregiving responsibilities with paid work is growing. We investigate the conflicts that aris

Pediatric Distal Forearm Fracture Epidemiology in Malmö, Sweden—Time Trends During Six Decades

The distal forearm fracture is the most common fracture in children. To allocate health care resources and evaluate if prevention strategies have been successful, it is essential to monitor changes in the epidemiology of common fractures. New publication in Journal of Wrist Surgery

Educational inequalities in all-cause and cause-specific mortality among people with gout: a register-based matched cohort study in southern Sweden

Our register-based matched cohort study showed that low level of education was associated with increased mortality among gout patients. Although the magnitude of relative inequality was smaller in people with gout compared with those without, the absolute inequalities were greater reflecting a major mortality burden among those with lower education. Completeness of case ascertainment in Swedish hospital‐based stroke registers

Some first‐ever stroke patients, such as those with high early case fatality and those with mild stroke, may go undetected with hospital‐based screening used in clinical stroke registers. This can result in selection bias due to not identifying specific groups of patients including some with high early case fatality and those living in healthcare facilities. Understanding the complexity of socioeconomic disparities in type 2 diabetes risk: a study of 4.3 million people in Sweden

Investigating demographic and socioeconomic factors as intersecting rather than as separate dimensions may improve our understanding of the heterogeneous distribution of type 2 diabetes in the population. However, this complexity has scarcely been investigated and we still do not know the accuracy of these factors for predicting type 2 diabetes. Improved understanding of the demographic and socioe

Secular trends of sustained remission in rheumatoid arthritis, a nationwide study in Sweden

Of patients with symptom onset in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, 35.0, 43.0 and 45.6% reached SR, respectively (P < 0.001 for each increment), and the odds of SR were higher in every decade compared with the one before. The hazard ratio for reaching SR was 1.15 (95% CI 1.14, 1.15) for each year from 1994 to 2009 compared with the year before. Five years after symptom onset in 2009, 45.3% of patients

Psychiatric disorders and cardiovascular diseases during the diagnostic workup of potential breast cancer: a population-based cohort study in Skåne, Sweden

An increasing number of women are evaluated for potential breast cancer and may experience mental distress during evaluation. We aim to assess the risks of psychiatric disorders and cardiovascular diseases during the diagnostic workup of potential breast cancer. New publication in Breast Cancer Research

The impact of care process development and comorbidity on time to surgery, mortality rate and functional outcome for hip fracture patients: a retrospective analysis over 19 years with data from the Swedish National Registry for hip fracture patients, RIKS

For a long time the attention given to the hip fracture patient group was minor and without any certain consideration to their frailty. To improve the care for these patients Skane University Hospital in Lund has during the past 19 years worked actively with developing the care. This paper aims to describe what impact the care process development has had on functional outcome and mortality, as wel

Replication of Oncology Randomized Trial Results using Swedish Registry Real World-Data: A Feasibility Study

Nationwide healthcare registries are potential important real-world data (RWD) sources for assessing drug effectiveness in oncology. However, it is unclear whether registry-derived RWD are suitable for clinical development. Read the paper at https://ascpt.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/cpt.2424

Comparison of the performances of survival analysis regression models for analysis of conception modes and risk of type-1 diabetes among 1985–2015 Swedish birth cohort

The goal is to examine the risk of conception mode-type-1 diabetes using different survival analysis modelling approaches and examine if there are differentials in the risk of type-1 diabetes between children from fresh and frozen-thawed embryo transfers. We aimed to compare the performances and fitness of different survival analysis regression models with the Cox proportional hazard (CPH) model u

Fall-related mortality in southern Sweden

We examined all death certificates (DCs, n=2 01 488) in adults recorded in the Skåne region during 1998–2014. We identified all fall deaths using International Statistical Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10 codes (W00-W19) and calculated the mortality rates by age and sex. Temporal trends were evaluated using joinpoint regression and associated causes were identified by age-adjusted and sex-adjus

Association between cerebral microbleeds and hypertension in the Swedish general population “Good Aging in Skåne” study

Cerebral microbleeds (CMB) on MRI are frequent in healthy aging individuals but precede ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke and dementia. Different etiologies have been suggested for nonlobar CMB, which have a stronger connection to hypertension (HT) than do lobar CMB. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of CMB and the association between nonlobar/lobar CMB and different blood pressure (BP)

The Long-Lasting Influenza: The Impact of Fetal Stress During the 1918 Influenza Pandemic on Socioeconomic Attainment and Health in Sweden, 1968–2012

The 1918 influenza pandemic had not only a massive instant death toll but also lasting effects on its survivors. Several studies have shown that children born in 1919, and thus exposed to the H1N1 virus in utero, experienced worse health and socioeconomic outcomes in older ages than surrounding birth cohorts. New publication in Demography.Read more here.

Risk of being born preterm in offspring of survivors with childhood or adolescent central nervous system tumor in Sweden

An increasing number of patients with central nervous system (CNS) tumor could survive to reproductive age. Gender influence on the bipolar disorder inpatient length of stay in Sweden, 2005–2014: A register-based study

The influence of gender on bipolar disorder is controversial and it is unclear if inpatient care differs between men and women. Here, we investigate for gender differences in the inpatient length of stay for Swedes admitted for bipolar disorder and explore other factors that could explain any observed association.
