Breaking the Pot: Contextual Responses to Survival Issues in Malaysian Churches

Protestantism in Malaysia is in many cases the result of labour migration from China and India in the 19th and 20th Centuries. Under the British colonial administration, it enjoyed a certain degree of protection. Furthermore, in the 20th Century, many Western missions started work in Malaysia often in order to strengthen and expand the ministry of existing denominations. This was particularly true

AVHRR NDVI for monitoring and mapping of vegetation and drought in East African environments

In this thesis, an assessment is made of the performance of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) derived from coarse resolution data from the NOAA AVHRR sensor, with particular reference to mapping and monitoring of drought and vegetation in East African vegetation and climatic conditions. Methods for analysing time series of satellite data are investigated. By studying the empirical

Probalistic Methods In Genomic Data Analysis

In this thesis, three aspects of gene expression data analysis are discussed: Differential gene expression is addressed by a probabilistic method. Gene annotation enrichment analysis is discussed in the context of multiple hypothesis testing and the choice of null hypothesis. The possibility of inferring the activity of cellular signaling pathways from microarray data is explored. The methods deve

Wave-actuated Preform Infiltration Routines in MMC Production

The implementation of highly magnetostrictive wave-actuator techniques in preform infiltration processes for metal-matrix composite production is described. Metal matrix materials require additional methods to handle the content, shape and position of the ceramic reinforcements, which are not required for metal alloy casting. Commercial fabrication of advanced metal matrix composite products has

Phylogeny of Artiodactyla and Cetacea - based on mitochondrial genomes

Artiodactyla (eved-toed ungulates) and Cetacea (whales) are two mammalian orders that are commonly recognised as sistergroups. Recently it has been suggested that Cetacea originated within Artiodactyla, but the relationships among the different artiodactyl lineages and Cetacea have not been conclusively established. In the present study the mitochondrial genome of the pig (Sus scrofa), the hippopo

Theoretical aspects of tetrapyrrole biochemistry

Modern theoretical simulations are able to provide significant insight into biochemical problems on a scale which continues to expand. With the aid of computer power and the sophisticated programs of researchers in the field, we have addressed a series of problems related to the so-called tetrapyrrole cofactors found in all living organisms. There have been three major challenges for us, all const

Interstitial Laser Thermotherapy of Liver Tumours. Methodology and Application

Interstitial laser thermotherapy (ILT) is a method well suited for selective local destruction of malignant tumours. In the present work, a laser thermotherapy system based on feedback temperature control of energy delivery (through computerised feedback system) was developed. Temperature control was excellent in experiments without carbonization and with preserved light penetration, whereas tempe

Life of Excitons in Artificial Photosynthetic Antennas

Due to the predicted energy crisis when fossil fuels will be exhausted it is important to search for alternative energy sources. Utilizing sunlight via artificial photosynthesis is an interesting possibility. The long-term goal for research in this area is to design and build molecular and/or solid state systems that can use sunlight to split water and produce fuel (e.g. hydrogen). Nature tells us
