Laser-induced phosphorescence spectroscopy: development and application of thermographic phosphors (TP) for thermometry in combustion environments

In this chapter a temperature probing technique based on the spectroscopy of inorganic luminescent materials is described and exemplified in experiments related to combustion. The basic features of thermographic phosphors which enable remote temperature diagnostics to be performed with a high degree of sensitivity and accuracy, are outlined. This technique is superior to those based on thermocoupl

Ascending stair evacuation: walking speed as a function of height

There is reason to believe that factors such as physical exertion and behavioural changes will influence the ascending walking speed and ultimately the possibility of satisfactory evacuation. To study these effects, a 2-year research project was initiated with the focus on effects of physical exertion on walking speeds, physiological performance and behaviours during long ascending evacuations. Tw

ANALYSIS OF CLUSTER OF DIFFERENTIATION (CD) MARKERS IN PEDIATRIC BRAIN TUMORS CAN BE USED AS A DIAGNOSTIC AND PROGNOSTIC TOOL

BACKGROUND: Malignant pediatric brain tumors constitute a heterogeneic group of central nervous system tumors, and general markers of diagnosis and prognosis are not available. Recently, a panel of CD markers (CD15, CD24, CD29) was used to define increasing neural differentiation of embryonic stem cells. Although these CD markers have been associated with worse prognosis due to presence of tumor p

Being a homebirth midwife in the Nordic countries - a phenomenological study

OBJECTIVE: To describe the lived experience of being a homebirth midwife in the Nordic countries.METHODS: Interviews conducted with 21 homebirth midwives from the five Nordic countries were analyzed with a phenomenological approach.RESULTS: The essential structure of being a homebirth midwife in the Nordic countries can be understood as realizing altruistic values and fulfilling one's own desires

Creating a safe haven-women's experiences of the midwife's professional skills during planned home birth in four Nordic countries

OBJECTIVE: The midwife assisting a birth has a considerable influence on the woman's experience of the birth. The aim of this study was to investigate the experience of the midwife's professional skills among women in Norway, Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden who chose a planned home birth.DESIGN AND SETTING: All known home birth midwives were asked to inform the mothers about the project and invite th

Modeling and simulation of intrinsically disordered proteins

Proteins are large, complex molecules that play many critical roles in the body and are required for the structure, function, and regulation of the body’s tissues and organs. In very simple terms, a protein can be defined as a linear chain of subunits called amino acid residues. The individual amino acid residues are sequentially bonded together by peptide bonds. There are 20 standard amino acids This work is primarily about the development, validation and application of computer simulation models for intrinsically disordered proteins, both in solution and in the presence of uniformly charged, ideal surfaces. The models in question are either coarse-grained or atomistic in nature, and their applications are dependent on the specific purpose of each study. Both, Metropolis Monte Carlo and m

The prognostic impact of COX-2 expression in breast cancer depends on oral contraceptive history, preoperative NSAID use, and tumor size

The association between tumor cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) expression and breast cancer prognosis has been inconsistent. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prognostic significance of COX-2 tumor expression according to adjuvant treatment, and potential effect modifications of non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use, and other tumor and lifestyle factors. A prospective cohort of 1,116

A new time optimizing probabilistic load balancing algorithm in grid computing

The computing grid is a distributed parallel processing system that share and choosing resources dynamically and provide need of user operation power, cost and quality .grid management resources does as a diagnostic and assigning resources scheduling and resource monitoring in grid . Scheduling process directs tasks to suitable resources. It must take place some how that load work distributed equa

Experiences of using powered wheelchair or powered scooter and accessibility in housings

OBJECTIVE: To describe powered wheelchair (PW) and powered scooter (PS) users' experiences of accessibility and housing adaptions in their homes.METHOD: A qualitative research approach with focus group methodology was used. Four focus groups were created, with men and women as well as PW and PS users in different groups. Applying a descriptive approach, data were analysed according to the principl

Signed value of monophasic action potential duration difference. A useful measure in evaluation of dispersion of repolarization in patients with ventricular arrhythmias

AIMS: To evaluate the usefulness of the signed value of monophasic action potential duration difference in analysing the cause of dispersion of ventricular repolarization.METHODS AND RESULTS: Monophasic action potentials were simultaneously recorded from the right ventricular apex and outflow tract during programmed stimulation in 36 patients with ventricular arrhythmias. The time difference betwe

Dispersion of repolarization following double and triple programmed stimulation. A clinical study using the monophasic action potential recording technique

To study the dispersion of ventricular repolarization following double and triple programmed stimulation and its correlation with the inducibility of ventricular arrhythmias, monophasic action potentials were simultaneously recorded from the right ventricular apex and outflow tract during programmed stimulation in 12 patients with ventricular arrhythmias and a normal QT interval. The time differen

Practitioner review: The assessment and treatment of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder in children and adolescents

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a syndrome defined by the intrusive re-experiencing of a trauma, avoidance of traumatic reminders, and persistent physiological arousal. PTSD is associated with high levels of comorbidity and may increase the risk for additional disorders over time. While controversies remain regarding the applicability of the PTSD criteria to very young children, it has pr

Clinical application of a microcomputer system for analysis of monophasic action potentials

UNLABELLED: Computerized analysis of monophasic action potentials (MAPs) has rarely been reported in clinical setting. We developed a computer system featuring on-line acquisition and user-monitored automatic measurement of multichannel MAPs with the capability of manual corrections. This system has been used in 34 patients in whom two-channel MAPs and 1-lead ECG were digitized during sinus rhythm
