Two-color Trapped-particle Optical Microscopy
We demonstrate a method for nonintrusive scanned near-field optical microscopy. The microscope utilizes an optical trap to position accurately a 50-100-nm-diameter lithium niobate particle. The infrared trapping beam is frequency doubled in the particle, resulting in a visible microscopic optical probe. By separation of the trapping and detection wavelengths, objects that are transparent in the in
Use of two gene panels for prostate cancer diagnosis and patient risk stratification.
Currently, no ideal prostate cancer (PCa) diagnostic or prognostic test is available due to the lack of biomarkers with high sensitivity and specificity. There is an unmet medical need to develop combinations of multiple biomarkers which may have higher accuracy in detection of PCa and stratification of aggressive and indolent cancer patients. The aim of this study was to test two biomarker gene p

Reliability-based evaluation of concrete dams
Swedish concrete dams are designed and assessed based on deterministic design using safety factors. The combination of increasing age, new methods for calculation of design floods and increasing demands by society to ensure a high level of safety, has resulted in upgrading and rebuilding needs for dams. When safety is re-evaluated it is important that evaluation is based on modern safety concepts.
Implant-supported full-arch zirconia-based mandibular fixed dental prostheses. Eight-year results from a clinical pilot study.
Abstract Objective. The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the long-term clinical performance of implant-supported full-arch zirconia-based fixed dental prostheses (FDPs). Materials and methods. Ten patients received full-arch zirconia-based (Cercon) mandibular FDPs supported by four implants (Astra Tech). Nine patients received 10-unit FDPs and one patient received a 9-unit FDP. The FDPs

Toward a standard approach to measurement and reporting of perioperative mortality rate as a global indicator for surgery.
The proportion of patients who die during or after surgery, otherwise known as the perioperative mortality rate (POMR), is a credible indicator of the safety and quality of operative care. Its accuracy and usefulness as a metric, however, particularly one that enables valid comparisons over time or between jurisdictions, has been limited by lack of a standardized approach to measurement and calcul
Caring for children undergoing radiotherapy treatment: Swedish radiotherapy nurses' perceptions.
The aim was to explore radiotherapy nurses' perceptions of their experiences of caring for children undergoing radiotherapy treatment for cancer.
The contradictory role of the sales assistant: superordination and subordination
Abstract: The social relationship between sales assistants and customers has often been described as relatively one-sided one in which sales assistants are subordinate to customers. One of the ways in which the subordination of sales assistants is manifested is when customers treat them badly, for instance in the form of verbal and physical abuse. We suggest that these power relations are not one-
Contact system activation in severe infectious diseases.
Hemostasis is a sensitive and tightly regulated process, involving vascular endothelium and blood cells, as well as factors of the coagulation and fibrinolytic cascades. In severe and invasive infectious diseases, the equilibrium between the procoagulant and anticoagulant status of the host may change dramatically and can induce life-threatening complications. A growing body of evidence suggests t

Characteristics and outcome of brachial plexus birth palsy in neonates.
Aim: To relate pregnancy characteristics to extent and reversibility of brachial plexus birth palsy (BPBP) in neonates. Methods: Retrospective case-control study: newborns with a registered diagnosis of BPBP (n = 168) 1990-2005 were compared to data from a randomly selected control group (n = 1000). Characteristics were related to the level of injury, reversibility and outcome. Results: Among 51 8
Accurate Calculation of the Isotope Shift and Hyperfine-structure In the Boron (b-ii) Line At 1362 Angstrom
An extensive multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock (MCHF) calculation of the isotope shift and hyperfine structure in the resonance line of B II at 1362 angstrom has been performed. The calculated B-11-B-10 isotope shift is 13.3 mangstrom with an estimated uncertainty of 1%. The calculated interaction constants A and B give a hyperfine structure splitting of less than 0.45 mangstrom for both isotopes. T
Early treatment with the von Rosen splint for neonatal instability of the hip is safe regarding avascular necrosis of the femoral head.
Background and purpose - Avascular necrosis of the femoral head (AVN) is a complication in treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). We evaluated the risk of AVN after early treatment in the von Rosen splint and measured the diameter of the ossific nucleus at 1 year of age. Children and methods - All children born in Malmö, Sweden, undergo clinical screening for neonatal instability o
Dispositional Moral Properties and Moral Motivation
Inspired by an analogy between moral and secondary properties, some moral philosophers have argued that moral properties are dispositions. According to one version of this view, most clearly represented by Jonathan Dancy, a moral property is the property of being such, having base properties such, that an entity with the property elicits morally merited and motivating responses. Its proponents hav
Coronary artery bypass grafting-related bleeding complications in patients treated with ticagrelor or clopidogrel: a nationwide study.
Excessive bleeding impairs outcome after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Current guidelines recommend withdrawal of clopidogrel and ticagrelor 5 days (120 h) before elective surgery. Shorter discontinuation would reduce the risk of thrombotic events and save hospital resources, but may increase the risk of bleeding. We investigated whether a shorter discontinuation time before surgery incr
