Crystal structures of two self-hydroxylating ribonucleotide reductase protein R2 mutants : Structural basis for the oxygen-insertion step of hydroxylation reactions catalyzed by diiron proteins
The R2 protein of ribonucleotide reductase catalyzes the dioxygen- dependent one-electron oxidation of Tyr122 at a diiron-carboxylate site. Methane monooxygenase and related hydroxylases catalyze hydrocarbon hydroxylation at diiron sites structurally related to the one in R2. In protein R2, the likely reaction site for dioxygen is close to Phe208. The crystal structure of an iron ligand mutant R2,

Recurrent risk of hospitalization among older persons with problematic alcohol use: A multiple failure-time analysis with a discontinuous risk model
Background and AimsOlder persons with problematic alcohol use vary in psychosocial functioning, age of onset for problem drinking and use of other drugs. The study measured the differential risks of all-cause, alcohol, polydrug and psychiatric-related repeated hospitalizations among older persons with problematic alcohol use.DesignA linked register-based cohort study with discontinuous multiple-fa
The HepMC3 event record library for Monte Carlo event generators
In high-energy physics, Monte Carlo event generators (MCEGs) are used to simulate the interactions of high energy particles. MCEG event records store the information on the simulated particles and their relationships, and thus reflect the simulated evolution of physics phenomena in each collision event. We present the HepMC3 library, a next-generation framework for MCEG event record encoding and m
Validating the Global Surgery Geographical Accessibility Indicator : Differences in Modeled Versus Patient-Reported Travel Times
Background: Since long travel times to reach health facilities are associated with worse outcomes, geographic accessibility is one of the six core global surgery indicators; this corresponds to the second of the “Three Delays Framework,” namely “delay in reaching a health facility.” Most attempts to estimate this indicator have been based on geographical information systems (GIS) algorithms. The a
Using Crash Databases to Predict Effectiveness of New Autonomous Vehicle Maneuvers for Lane-Departure Injury Reduction
Autonomous vehicle functions in safety-critical situations show promise in reducing the risk and saving lives in accidents compared to existing safety systems. Consequently, it is from many perspectives advantageous to be able to quantify the potential benefits of new autonomous systems for vehicle maneuvers at-the-limit of tire friction. Here, to estimate the potential in terms of saved lives and
Material and technique development for ultrasound optical tomography using spectral hole burning filters
The molecular sensitivity provided by optical photons has potential advantages in medical diagnostics, for example, in distinguishing healthy from cancerous tissue. However, scattering resulting from inhomogeneities in the refractive index of tissues prevents spatially resolved optical measurements in biological material, except at very shallow depths. This thesis presents research on a medical im
The Meridian S02E01 : The James Webb Space Telescope & an unexpected boat ride
In this first episode of the second season Nic and Rebecca invite Ori Fox to the podcast to discuss the newly launched JWST. Ori is an instrument scientist at the pace Telescope Science Institute (STSI) working on the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) which is one of four instruments on the James Webb Space Telescope. In this second season of the Meridian we are also bringing you some field reporting
Ground-based remote sensing of the shallow subsurface : Geophysical methods for environmental applications
Noninvasive methods for the characterization of shallow subsurface have been used routinely for some 20–30 years. The growth in these methods has been driven by a variety of breakthroughs in the use of electrical, electromagnetic, and seismic methods, to mention only the most common techniques. Increasing field capabilities and computational power have yet to yield all their potential fruits. In t
Toxicity of cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intra-peritoneal chemotherapy
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cytoreduction with hyperthermic intra-peritoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is a treatment with a high morbidity. Optimal patients selection can possible reduce toxicity and complications.PATIENTS AND METHODS: Complications and toxicity of 102 patients were studied. Toxicity was graded according National Cancer Institute Common Toxicity Criteria (NCI CTC) classification. A com
Elucidating the effect of body mass index, height, and parity on uncomplicated cystitis : a nationwide population-based cohort study
In this nationwide cohort of one million fertile women, BMI, height, and parity only had minor but statistically significant effects on the risk of uncomplicated cystitis. The results indicate that underweight women and certain sociodemographic groups might have higher risks, which could have underlying explanations that need further studying.
Informal civil society initiatives in non-Western societies: mahallas in Uzbekistan
Despite the extensive literature on the nexus between civil society and democratization in non-democratic regimes, most existing scholarship focuses on politically oriented and claim-making civil society organizations. While these accounts provide useful insights, they appear to rely on Western-centric understandings of civil society. Undoubtedly, little space exists in non-democratic regimes with
Radiofrequency ablation combined with systemic treatment versus systemic treatment alone in patients with non-resectable colorectal liver metastases : A randomized eortc intergroup phase ii study (EORTC 40004)
Background: This study investigates the possible benefits of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in patients with non-resectable colorectal liver metastases. Methods: This phase II study, originally started as a phase III design, randomly assigned 119 patients with non-resectable colorectal liver metastases between systemic treatment (n = 59) or systemic treatment plus RFA (± resection) (n = 60). Primar
Experimental evaluation of longitudinal and transverse vortex generators on the endwall of a serpentine passage
A 180-deg turning channel can be seen in many heat exchange systems, and a strong three-dimensional flow phenomenon will occur at the turning point. In order to strengthen the heat transfer inside the turn and considering the lack of relevant enhanced endwall heat transfer approach, the present study innovatively demonstrates the measures of enhanced internal endwall heat transfer using arrays of
Male breast cancer after childhood cancer : Systematic review and analyses in the PanCareSurFup cohort
Background: Breast cancer is a well-recognised late adverse effect in female childhood cancer survivors (CCSs), especially after chest radiotherapy; information on subsequent male breast cancer (SMBC) is limited. We summarised the existing evidence on SMBC after childhood cancer in a systematic review and investigated the risk of SMBC among males in a Pan-European cohort. Methods: We searched Medl
Evolutionary trade-offs between heat and cold tolerance limit responses to fluctuating climates
Fantasiflykt : fantasins betydelse i läsfrämjande insatser för barn och unga 1980–2020
In this master thesis, I analyse a wide array of texts on children’s and youths reading and reading promotion in Sweden during 1980–2020, in order to assess how the concept of imagination is depicted and valued. The source material consists of official documents on reading promotion, such as commission reports, strategy plans, and surveys; a variety of texts dealing with children’s and youths read
HMGA1 has predictive value in response to chemotherapy in gastric cancer
Gastric cancer is a serious health problem worldwide. Although its incidence is decreasing, the five-year survival rate remains low. Thus, it is essential to identify new biomarkers that could promote better diagnosis and treatment of patients with gastric cancer. High-mobility group AT-hook 1 (HMGA1) is a non-histone, chromatin-binding protein that has been found overexpressed in several tumor ty
