Hydrogen concentration analysis in clinopyroxene using proton–proton scattering analysis

Traditional methods to measure water in nominally anhydrous minerals (NAMs) are, for example, Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy or secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). Both well-established methods provide a low detection limit as well as high spatial resolution yet may require elaborate sample orientation or destructive sample preparation. Here we analyze the water content in er

Late leakage after anterior resection : a defunctioning stoma alters the clinical course of anastomotic leakage

Aim: Anastomotic leakage (AL) is common after anterior resection (AR). Long term clinical outcomes of AL including late presenting leakage (LL) are not well studied. This study was undertaken to assess clinical features of LL with respect to incidence, association with predisposing factors and need for re-intervention. Methods: The Swedish Colorectal Cancer Registry (SCRCR) was explored for AL cas

Analysis of the potential of assessing sustainable production with a cost model

This paper investigates the usability of a cost model to assess sustainable production. The aim is to develop an established cost model to also take sustainability into consideration and hence evaluate sustainable production on the shop floor. To facilitate the analyse literature have been studied to find indicators for sustainable production. The indicators have then been mapped together with parThis paper investigates the usability of a cost model to assess sustainable production. Long-term prediction of prostate cancer diagnosis and death using PSA and obesity related anthropometrics at early middle age : Data from the malmö preventive project

Objectives: To evaluate whether anthropometric parameters add to PSA measurements in middle-aged men for risk assessment of prostate cancer (PCa) diagnosis and death. Results: After adjusting for PSA, both BMI and weight were significantly associated with an increased risk of PCa death with the odds of a death corresponding to a 10 kg/m2 or 10 kg increase being 1.58 (95% CI 1.10, 2.28; p = 0.013)

The revised Bristol Rheumatoid Arthritis Fatigue measures and the Rheumatoid Arthritis Impact of Disease scale : Validation in six countries

Objective. To evaluate the Bristol Rheumatoid Arthritis Fatigue Multidimensional Questionnaire (BRAFMDQ), the revised Bristol Rheumatoid Arthritis Numerical Rating Scales (BRAF-NRS V2) and the Rheumatoid Arthritis Impact of Disease (RAID) scale in six countries. Methods. We surveyed RA patients in France, Germany, The Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and the UK, including the HAQ, 36-item Short Form Hea

Natural variation in the parameters of innate immune cells is preferentially driven by genetic factors

The quantification and characterization of circulating immune cells provide key indicators of human health and disease. To identify the relative effects of environmental and genetic factors on variation in the parameters of innate and adaptive immune cells in homeostatic conditions, we combined standardized flow cytometry of blood leukocytes and genome-wide DNA genotyping of 1,000 healthy, unrelat

Fast neutron sensitivity of neutron detectors based on boron-10 converter layers

In the last few years many detector technologies for thermal neutron detection have been developed in order to face the shortage of 3He, which is now much less available and more expensive. Moreover the 3He-based detectors can not fulfil the requirements in performance, e.g. the spatial resolution and the counting rate capability needed for the new instruments. The Boron-10-based gaseous detectors

Aurora Dumitrescu, author of two novels, Cagliostro and The Bipolar(Tracus Arte Press, 2016). The Bipolar places its action in the contemporary world and applies not very different narrative techniques. The similarity in parallel readings shows that the Coelho model is obvious, but I would saythat Aurora Dumitrescu respects more her readers, as she stimulates their intelligence too. The only honor

Diagnosis, monitoring and prevention of exposure-related non-communicable diseases in the living and working environment : DiMoPEx-project is designed to determine the impacts of environmental exposure on human health

The WHO has ranked environmental hazardous exposures in the living and working environment among the top risk factors for chronic disease mortality. Worldwide, about 40 million people die each year from noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) including cancer, diabetes, and chronic cardiovascular, neurological and lung diseases. The exposure to ambient pollution in the living and working environment is ex

Relative risks of contributing factors to morbidity and mortality in adults with craniopharyngioma on growth hormone replacement

Context: In adults, craniopharyngioma (CP) of either childhood-onset (CO-CP) or adult-onset (AOCP) is associated with increased morbidity and mortality, but data on the relative risks (RRs) of contributing factors are lacking. Objective: To assess the RRs of factors contributing to morbidity and mortality in adults with CO-CP and AO-CP. Methods: Data on 1669 patients with CP from KIMS (Pfizer Inte

Direct measurement of fast transients by using boot-strapped waveform averaging

An approximation to coherent sampling, also known as boot-strapped waveform averaging, is presented. The method uses digital cavities to determine the condition for coherent sampling. It can be used to increase the effective sampling rate of a repetitive signal and the signal to noise ratio simultaneously. The method is demonstrated by using it to directly measure the fluorescence lifetime from Rh

In vivo mallard experiments indicate that zanamivir has less potential for environmental influenza a virus resistance development than oseltamivir

Neuraminidase inhibitors are a cornerstone of influenza pandemic preparedness before vaccines can be mass-produced and thus a neuraminidase inhibitor-resistant pandemic is a serious threat to public health. Earlier work has demonstrated the potential for development and persistence of oseltamivir resistance in influenza A viruses exposed to environmentally relevant water concentrations of the drug

Hypertracking beyond the Nyquist frequency

We study the problem of tracking or disturbance rejection for signals beyond the Nyquist frequency in the sampled-data context. Given the well-established sampling theorem, one is inclined to infer that it is possible to track or reject only those signals below the Nyquist frequency. However, such a high-frequency signal may be detected as an aliased signal, and this opens a new possibility in tra

Heparin-binding protein as a biomarker of acute kidney injury in critical illness

Background: There is no biomarker with high sensitivity and specificity for the development of acute kidney injury (AKI) in a mixed intensive care unit (ICU) population. Heparin-binding protein (HBP) is released from granulocytes and causes increased vascular permeability which plays a role in the development of AKI in sepsis and ischemia. The aim of this study was to investigate whether plasma le

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm of the pancreas–epidemiology, risk factors, diagnosis, and management

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) is one of the most common cystic neoplasms of the pancreas. It is a heterogeneous disease and can be divided into ductal types and morphological subtypes. The incidence of IPMN is increasing, likely due to the widespread use of cross-sectional imaging and a growing elderly population. IPMN poses an increasing demand on the health care system. Current

Apolipoprotein M increases the expression of Vitamin D receptor mRNA in colorectal cancer cells detected with duplex fluorescence reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction

Apolipoprotein M (ApoM) and the Vitamin D receptor (VDR) are apolipoproteins predominantly presenting in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and a karyophilic protein belonging to the steroid-thyroid receptor superfamily, respectively. Previous studies have demonstrated that ApoM and VDR are associated with cholesterol metabolism, immune and colorectal cancer regulation. In order to investigate whether

Culture in embryonic kidney serum and xeno-free media as renal cell carcinoma and renal cell carcinoma cancer stem cells research model

The use of fetal bovine serum hinders obtaining reproducible experimental results and should also be removed in hormone and growth factor studies. In particular hormones found in FBS act globally on cancer cell physiology and influence transcriptome and metabolome. The aim of our study was to develop a renal carcinoma serum free culture model optimized for (embryonal) renal cells in order to selec
