Specificity and characteristics of fuzzy complexes -- Modelling of intrinsically disordered proteins

Intrinsically disordered proteins can, in the same way as ordered proteins, interact with other proteins to fulful their function. When intrinsically disordered proteins interact with other proteins they can form complexes, so-called fuzzy complexes, with different degrees of disorder still prese

Smart sensor for wrist movements

The aim of this thesis was to develop a way to evaluate the mobility of the wrist or hand after an injury. To do this a prototype of a compression glove with added conductive silicone was made. A tensile test was done first to test linearity between resistance and elongation. Thereafter this was implemented on the prototype. The silicone, Elastosil LR3162 showed good proprieties for the purpose w

Optimization of biomass materials for use in the Sponge Iron Process

This master thesis was a project in cooperation with Höganäs AB. The aim was to increase the apparent density (AD) of two biomass chars, by three different agglomeration methods. The reason for the investigation is that biomass char could be used as a reducing agent in the sponge iron process at Höganäs AB. The goal was to exchange anthracite in the reduction mixture to agglomerated biomass char.

Analyzing the Resource Curse theory: A comparative study of Kazakhstan and Norway

Many natural resources lead economies experience worse economic performance than their exports lead counterparts. This phenomenon is known as the Resource Curse, and many resource abundant countries face it. This study is aimed to critically assess existing Resource Curse theory by comparing two seemingly different cases Kazakhstan and Norway. Based on the Resource Curse theory hypothesis suggests

Nonlinear Model Predictive Control in JModelica.org

In this thesis, a stronger support for Model Predictive Control (MPC) in JModelica.org has been implemented. JModelica.org is an open-source software for simulation and optimization of systems described by Modelica models. MPC is an optimization-based control strategy where one formulates an Optimal Control Problem (OCP) to describe the aim of the controller. At discrete time points the state of t

High-Loaded Activated Sludge - Improvement of a Solids Retention Time Controlled System

The Sjölunda wastewater treatment plant faces the challenge of tougher demands for the quality of the water leaving the plant and entering the Öresund strait between Denmark and Sweden. At the same time, the population of Malmö with neighbourhood is growing rapidly, which means an increase in the loading on the plant. The residence time for the active microbes, the “sludge”, in the first biologicaAlthough 100 years old, the activated sludge system remains inevitable for modern wastewater treatment. Advancements within the development of mainstream nitrogen removal techniques based on anaerobic ammonium-oxidising bacteria have renewed the interest in traditional, high-loaded activated sludge systems for COD removal only. In order for activated sludge plants to be efficient in terms of energ

Attributional style and its relation to leadership style and organizational culture

Attributional styles have been paid little attention in the organizational context and previous research has mostly focused on the consequences of attributional styles, such as how attributional styles influence work behaviors. Attributional styles development in work settings has thereby been paid little attention, as for example, how individuals’ way of attributing in an organization can be shap

Too sick to fly. Immune response activation prolongs stopover duration of migrating passerines

Most migratory bird species divide their migration in stages of flight and stopovers. They use these stopovers to refuel the energy reserves needed to face their long migration journeys. These stopovers are an important element to determine the overall migration speed. Time spent on migration and arrival date to the wintering grounds have been demonstrated to have a large effects the following bre

Renovating Building through Energy Roof and Facade Systems

Nowadays society is becoming more aware of the fact that energy use has a negative environmental impact, contributing to fossil fuels depletion and global warming increase. Therefore, the Swedish Parliament has adopted the The European Comission’s 20-20-20 goals, climate and energy policy targets that shall be achieved by 2020, referring to 20% reduction of CO2 emissions, 20% increase in energy ef

ScFv barcoding – technology development towards MIcroArrays in Solution

The field of disease proteomics is lacking techniques capable of analysing complex samples with high sensitivity and selectivity. A new MIcroArrays in Solution (MIAS) technology is being developed to addres the technological issues of the current established methods, such as antibody microarrays, 2DE and MS used for protein expression profiling. MIAS technology is based on DNA barcode labeled scFv

Fast GPU Accelerated Stereo Correspondence for Embedded Surveillance Camera Systems

Many surveillance applications could benefit from the use of stereo cam- eras for depth perception. While state-of-the-art methods provide high quality scene depth information, many of the methods are very time consuming and not suitable for real-time usage in limited embedded systems. This study was conducted to examine stereo correlation methods to find a suitable algorithm for real-time or near

Purification, crystallization and characterization of modified HBV capsid

Nanocarriers and nanoreactors are often derived from viral capsids. The capsid of HBV is a particularly attractive self-assembling model, fit for conversion into protein carrier. In this thesis modified HBV capsid is expressed in E.coli and purified by size exclusion chromatography. Nanocarrier system is based on principle of specific binding between the modified capsid building block and protein

Should we point them away from the sun? -A study in PV spectral tracking in a Scandinavian climate

Conventional photovoltaic solar tracking is commonly done by aligning the surface normal of a PV module with the direction from which direct solar irradiation is coming from. While this tracking design has proven to perform well in sunny climates, solar tracking is altogether less common in northern climates where the direct solar irradiance is weaker. In this study a radiative transfer model is u

DThe essay builds on a public opinion poll from 2014 indicating that a majority of the Swedish citizens believe that mainstream media are hiding “the truth” about social problems related to issues of migration and refugee policy. The outspread distrust of mainstream media takes place during a time of continuing digitalization of the media landscape, which has led to increasingly diversified news co
