Gender Aspects on Heart Failure

There is an increasing amount of data suggesting that there are inherent epidemiological and pathophysiological, as well as psychosocial differences between men and women with heart failure (HF). These differences may be so profound that they warrant differences in management and treatment. Furthermore women have been greatly underrepresented in clinical HF treatment trials. The major aim of the s

Translational perspectives on MSMB and CRISP3 expression and regulation in prostate cancer

Sedan PSA testet började användas på 90-talet har antalet diagnostiserade fall av prostatacancer blivit alProstate cancer is currently the most common form of cancer in Sweden. Currently, the only biomarker used in the clinic is serum PSA, and there is a great need for new biomarkers that may increase the diagnostic and prognostic information so that better predictions can be made, and treatment may be tailored. Here, we have investigated two proposed biomarkers microseminoprotein-β (MSMB) and cystein

Stereoisomeric analysis of 6,10,14-Trimethylpentadecan-2-ol and the corresponding ketone in wing extracts from African Bicyclus butterfly species

Gas chromatography (GC) and mass spectrometry (MS) were used to determine the stereoisomeric compositions of 6,10,14-trimethylpentadecan-2-ol and 6,10,14-trimethylpentadecan-2-one in wing extracts from 17 Bicyclus butterfly species from different regions of Africa. All samples were purified using solid phase extraction (SPE). Since some species contained both alcohol and ketone, these were separat

Numerical simulation study of the performance of a small neutron three axis spectrometer

This article describes Monte Carlo computer simulations comparing the performances of a conventional neutron three axis spectrometer (TAS) and a micro-TAS, a mu TAS, designed to be as compact as seems practical. The simulations show that the mu TAS delivers performance (intensity at equal resolution) equivalent to that of a normal TAS. The mu TAS should be very cheap to build and a "farm" of sever

Skåne i Danmark : en dansk historia till 1658

This is a short account of Danish history from the viking age until 1658. The Skåne provinces, lost to Sweden in 1658, have often been abscent in Danish histories, and in Sweden, their Danish history is also often forgotten. This books gives them place within a traditional narrative of Danish history.

Derivation of the Density and Refractive Index of Organic Matter and Elemental Carbon from Closure between Physical and Chemical Aerosol Properties

Information on the density (p) and refractive index m(=n-ik) of elemental carbon (ECa) and organic matter (OMa), the main carbon components of atmospheric aerosols, has frequently been obtained from closure calculations between physical and chemical aerosol properties. However, this approach has suffered from large uncertainties since there were more unknown (or poorly known) parameters than defin

Serviceformen personlig assistans, som myntades av den amerikanska Independent Living –rörelsen i slutet av 1960 talet, uPersonal assistance is a user-directed service that was founded by a section of the disability movement, namely the American Independent Living movement, in the late 1960s. Today, the concept and ideology of personal assistance services (PAS) has spread worldwide, and constitutes a part of the support system for people with disabilities in many countries. The service differs from several other pub

Studying risk governance using a design perspective

A conceptual framework for systematically studying and analysing risk governance is introduced. The framework, which is influenced by design science, is particularly valuable for relating the way risks are handled at the micro-level to aspects at the macro-level. Three central concepts are included in the framework: purpose, function, and form. A function is used to denote what a specific system d

Rationale and design of EXPLORE: a randomized, prospective, multicenter trial investigating the impact of recanalization of a chronic total occlusion on left ventricular function in patients after primary percutaneous coronary intervention for acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction

Background: In the setting of primary percutaneous coronary intervention, patients with a chronic total occlusion in a non-infarct related artery were recently identified as a high-risk subgroup. It is unclear whether ST-elevation myocardial infarction patients with a chronic total occlusion in a non-infarct related artery should undergo additional percutaneous coronary intervention of the chronic

Radioimmunotherapy for Prostate Cancer-Current Status and Future Possibilities.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most common cancers in men and is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the USA. In the United States, it is the second most frequently diagnosed cancer after skin cancer, and in Europe it is number one. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 221,000 men in the United States would be diagnosed with PCa during 2015, and approximate

Laurdan fluorescence spectroscopy in the thylakoid bilayer: The effect of violaxanthin to zeaxanthin conversion on the galactolipid dominated lipid environment

Laurdan (6-lauroyl-2-dimethylaminonaphthalene) fluorescence spectroscopy has been applied to probe the physical status of the thylakoid membrane upon conversion of violaxanthin to zeaxanthin. So far, only phospholipid-dominated membranes have been studied by this method and hereby we report the first use of laurdan in mono- and digalactosyldiacylglycerol-dominated membrane systems. The generalised

Photofragmentation laser-induced fluorescence imaging in premixed flames

Two-dimensional measurements of primarily hydroperoxyl radicals (HO2) are, for the first time, demonstrated in flames. The measurements are performed in different Bunsen-type premixed flames (H-2/O-2. CH4/O-2, and CH4/air) using photofragmentation laser-induced fluorescence (PF-LIF). Photofragmentation is done by laser radiation at 266 nm, and the generated OH photofragments are probed through flu

Higher risk of reoperation for bipolar and uncemented hemiarthroplasty : 23,509 procedures after femoral neck fractures from the Swedish Hip Arthroplasty Register, 2005-2010

Background and purpose Hemiarthroplasty as treatment for femoral neck fractures has increased markedly in Sweden during the last decade. In this prospective observational study, we wanted to identify risk factors for reoperation in modular hemiarthroplasties and to evaluate mortality in this patient group. Patients and methods We assessed 23,509 procedures from the Swedish Hip Arthroplasty Registe

Charmonium and e(+)e(-) pair photoproduction at mid-rapidity in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN)=2.76 TeV

The ALICE Collaboration at the LHC has measured the J/psi and psi' photoproduction at mid-rapidity in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV. The charmonium is identified via its leptonic decay for events where the hadronic activity is required to be minimal. The analysis is based on an event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 23 mu b(-1). The cross secti
