Systematic feed-forward convolutional encoders are better than other encoders with an M-algorithm decoder

Consider nonbacktracking convolutional decoders that keep a fixed number of trellis survivors. It is shown that the error performance of these depends on the early part of the distance profile and on the number of survivors kept, and not on the free distance or the details of the code generators. Particularly, the encoder may be feedforward systematic without loss. Furthermore, this kind of encode

Natural frequencies of circular disks

The natural frequencies or the singularity expansion method (SEM) poles are computed for circular disks. We treat the acoustically soft disk, i.e, the Dirichlet boundary condition, and the perfectly conducting disk. The poles are found by an application of theT-matrix method by searching the zeros of a determinant. The poles associated with the first values of the azimuthal indexmare shown in both

Using Real-time Java for Industrial Robot Control

Safe languages like Java provide a much more programmerfriendly environment than the low-level languages in which real-time and embedded software have traditionally been implemented. However, an obstacle for widespread use of Java in control applications has been the predictability and real-time performance of garbage collection, and the cumbersome memory management associated with RTSJ NoHeapReal

The heating effect of phase change material (PCM) vests on a thermal manikin in a subzero environment

The heating effects of three PCM vests (Tmelt=32, 28 and 24 °C) were tested on a thermal manikin with constant temperature at 30 ºC in a subzero environment (Ta=-4 °C, Va=0.4 m/s). The results showed that the heating effects lasted about 3-4 hours. The highest heating effects reduced heat loss for 20-30 W/m2 on the torso during the first two hours. The results also showed that the vest with higher

After anti-Catholicism? : John Henry Newman and Protestant Britain, 1845-c. 1890

Is it possible to capture, in brief, the fundamental changes that affected the role of religion within modern Western society? For a long time, many scholars would have answered that question in the positive; most of them would certainly have counted increasingly tolerant attitudes towards forms of religion that were once been regarded as unacceptable, as being one of those central features. In th

Telomere length in blood and skeletal muscle in relation to measures of glycaemia and insulinaemia.

Aims: Skeletal muscle is a major metabolic organ and plays important roles in glucose metabolism, insulin sensitivity and insulin action. Muscle telomere length reflects the myocyte's exposure to harmful environmental factors. Leukocyte telomere length is considered a marker of muscle telomere length and is used in epidemiologic studies to assess associations with ageing-related diseases where mus

Since the latest update of the checklist on bees known from Denmark, the following three species have been added as new to the country: Colletes halophilus Verhoeff, 1943 (Colletidae), Nomada obscura Zetterstedt, 1838 (Apidae) and Xylocopa violacea (Linnaeus, 1758) (Apidae). The national checklist hereby includes 286 bee species, but more species will probably be found in the future, as the wild b

No direct effects of erythropoietin beta on a head and neck squamous cell carcinoma cell line which is growth stimulated in vivo.

Introduction. Erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) are used in cancer therapy to reverse anaemia. It has been suggested that ESAs might improve treatment outcome by reducing tumour hypoxia, but ESAs might also increase tumour growth. In this work, the effect of recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEpo) beta was investigated on a human head and neck squamous carcinoma cell (HNSCC) line in vitro

Conference Report: Media Studies

This article reviews the media studies section at the European Association of Japanese Studies conference in Ljubljana, Slovenia in July 2014. The conference marked the introduction of a separate media studies section at the EAJS, and the review comments favorably on the initiative as well as the overall outcome of the presentations and discussions in the section.
