Identification of humans using gait

We propose a view-based approach to recognize humans from their gait. Two different image features have been considered: The width of the outer contour of the binarized silhouette of the walking person and the entire binary silhouette itself. To obtain the observation vector from the image features, we employ two different methods. In the first method, referred to as the indirect approach, the hig

Appearance-based 3-D face recognition from video

In this work we present an appearance-based 3-D Face Recognition approach that is able to recognize faces in video sequences, independent from face pose. For this we combine eigen light-fields with probabilistic propagation over time for evidence integration. Eigen light-fields allow us to build an appearance based 3-D model of an object; probabilistic methods for evidence integration are attracti

Aminopyrimidine-galactose hybrids are highly selective galectin-3 inhibitors

Galectins are a family of carbohydrate recognition proteins involved in, among other things, modulating cell signalling and cell-environment interactions, giving them roles in several pathologies like cancer and idiopathic lung fibrosis. Hence, developing new galectin inhibitors with high affinity and high selectivity is important to be able to target such diseases. Most existing galectin inhibito

Coxsackievirus A6 and enterovirus 71 causing hand, foot and mouth disease in Cuba, 2011-2013

Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is usually caused by coxsackievirus A16 or enterovirus 71 (EV71). Between 2011 and 2013, HFMD cases were reported from different Cuban provinces. A total of 42 clinical specimens were obtained from 23 patients. Detection, identification and phylogenetic analysis of enterovirus-associated HFMD were carried out by virus isolation, specific enterovirus PCR and part

Bird colour vision – from cones to perception

Birds use spectral information for circadian control, magnetic orientation and phototaxis but most importantly for discriminating the colours of important objects such as food items or mates. Their tetrachromatic colour vision is based on four types of single cones expressing four opsin-based visual pigments and fine-tuned by the carotenoid composition in cone oil droplets. Bird colour vision is n

A wavelet subspace method for real-time face tracking

In this article, we present a new method for visual face tracking that is carried out in a wavelet subspace. Initially, a wavelet representation for the face template is created, which spans a low-dimensional subspace of the image space. The video sequence frames, where the face is tracked, are then orthogonally projected into this subspace. This can be done efficiently through a small number of a

Cardiac MRI Endpoints in Myocardial Infarction Experimental and Clinical Trials : JACC Scientific Expert Panel

After a reperfused myocardial infarction (MI), dynamic tissue changes occur (edema, inflammation, microvascular obstruction, hemorrhage, cardiomyocyte necrosis, and ultimately replacement by fibrosis). The extension and magnitude of these changes contribute to long-term prognosis after MI. Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) is the gold-standard technique for noninvasive myocardial tissue characteriz

First-degree relatives of persons with type 1 diabetes : insulin resistance and enterovirus infection are associated with different patterns of islet cell autoimmunity

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) results from the interaction of genetic and environmental factors. Previous studies indicate an association between detection of Enterovirus (EV) genome in blood and the clinical onset of T1D. Insulin resistance can also represent a risk factor for progression to clinically overt T1D. This study aimed at evaluating whether there is association between both EV infection and in

Molecular characterization of adenoviral infections in Cuba : report of an unusual association of species D adenoviruses with different clinical syndromes

Adenoviruses are common pathogens that are responsible for a wide variety of infectious syndromes. The objectives of this study were to identify and characterize members of different adenovirus species at the molecular level and to describe the correlation between viruses and clinical syndromes during a period of 4 years. Between 2002 and 2006, 45 of 512 respiratory specimens (8%) from patients wi

Mechanism of enterovirus involvement in epidemic neuropathy : hypothesis regarding pathophysiology

During the epidemic of optic and peripheral neuropathy which occurred in Cuba in 1992-1993, viruses antigenically related to the Coxsackie viruses were isolated from cerebrospinal fluid of patients. Concurrently with the virologic studies, epidemiologic, toxicologic, nutritional, immunologic, and histopathologic investigations were also carried out. Although it was demonstrated that the illness wa

A series of experiments was made at the Virology Department of the "Pedro Kourí" Institute of Tropical Medicine aimed at obtaining new evidences on the possible antigenic relations existing between the viruses isolated from patients with epidemic neuropathy and the structures of the human nervous system. According to the results it may be finally inferred that the persistence and/or autoimmunity m

An increase of the cases of viral meningoencephalitis was reported in our country from October to December, 1995. 23 faeces specimens were received from 2 provinces aimed at obtaining the viral isolation by their inoculation in cell culture and in newborn mice at the same time in order to compare the sensitivity of both systems in isolation. A higher number of isolations was obtained in cell cultu

Molecular characterization of an outbreak of respiratory syncytial virus (subgroup A) in Havana, Cuba, by monoclonal antibodies and restriction mapping (N gene)

Twenty-one respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) strains isolated from one outbreak in Havana, Cuba (1994 to 1995), were analyzed to determine their relatedness. All isolated strains were classified as subgroup A by monoclonal antibodies. Of 21 RSV strains examined, 20 were classified as having restriction pattern NP4 and only 1 was classified as having restriction pattern NP5.

Integrating video information over time. Example : Face recognition from video

The ability to integrate information over time in order to come to a conclusion is a strength of cognitive systems. It allows the system, e.g., to1verify insecure observations: This is the case when data is noisy or of low-quality, or if conditions in general are non-optimal. 2exploit general knowledge about spatio-temporal relations: This allows the system to exploit the specific dynamics of an o

Exemplar-based face recognition from video

A new exemplar-based probabilistic approach for face recognition in video sequences is presented. The approach has two stages: First, exemplars, which are selected representatives from the raw video, are automatically extracted from gallery videos. The exemplars are used to summarize the gallery video information. In the second part, exemplars are then used as centers for probabilistic mixture dis

Advances in stem cell research and therapeutic development

Despite many reports of putative stem-cell-based treatments in genetic and degenerative disorders or severe injuries, the number of proven stem cell therapies has remained small. In this Review, we survey advances in stem cell research and describe the cell types that are currently being used in the clinic or are close to clinical trials. Finally, we analyse the scientific rationale, experimental
