A four-year follow-up study on the incidence of diabetic retinopathy in older onset diabetes mellitus

Out of 369 diabetic patients with an age at onset of diabetes > or = 30 years previously studied, 325 (88%) were included in an ophthalmological follow-up examination 4 years later. In patients treated with oral drugs at baseline, the incidence of any type of retinopathy was 30.8% and of severe retinopathy 5.7%. All patients who developed severe retinopathy received insulin during the follow-up pe

Leaving Home in a Peasant Society. Economic Fluctuations, Household Dynamics and Youth Migration in Southern Sweden, 1829-1866.

Popular Abstract in Swedish Avhandlingen behandlar barns flyttningar hemifrån i det förindustriella bondesamhället. Utöver att studera när barn lämnade hemmet kopplas också flyttningsprocessen till den förindustriella hushållsekonomins funktionssätt. Analysen görs på ett longitudinellt material för ett område i västra Skåne under perioden 1829-1866. Individerna följs från födseln, eller från det aThis study deals with the process of children leaving home and its interactions with the household economy in preindustrial society. A theoretical model of leaving home is outlined and then analyzed multivariately, using a longitudinal micro-level dataset for a sample of parishes in western Scania, Sweden, for the period 1829-1866. In a first introductory part the social and economic background as

Greater reduction of knee than hip pain in osteoarthritis treated with naproxen, as evaluated by WOMAC and SF-36

Objectives: To compare the improvement of hip and knee osteoarthritis during treatment with naproxen. Methods: Men and women aged 40 to 75 years with symptomatic osteoarthritis of the knee or hip of at least three months' duration participated in a six week placebo controlled, double blind study with naproxen 500 mg twice daily as one treatment arm. Naproxen was given to 403 patients (280 knee, 12

Submaximal-exercise-induced impairment of human muscle to develop and maintain force at low frequencies of electrical stimulation

The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that low intensity exercise-induced low frequency fatigue is caused by failure of excitation-contraction coupling. Changes in knee extension torque at 5, 10, 15, 20 and 50 Hz electrical stimulation of quadriceps muscle in ten healthy, young, male subjects were recorded during 20-min voluntary exercise followed by 60-min recovery. In seven of the ten

Woven convolutional codes II: Decoding aspects

An iterative decoding scheme for woven convolutional codes is presented. It operates in a window sliding over the received sequence. This exploits the nature of convolutional codewords as infinite sequences and reflects the concept of considering convolutional encoding and decoding as a continuous process. The decoder is analyzed in terms of decoding delay and decoding complexity. Its basic buildi

Sensory quality and the incidence of PSE of pork in relation to crossbreed and RN phenotype.

The effects of crossbreed and of RN phenotype on pork and its eating quality were evaluated in four different pig crossbreeds [involving Swedish Landrace (L) × Yorkshire (Y) sows and Hampshire (H), Duroc (D), Yorkshire (Y) or Hampshire × Yorkshire (HY) as the terminal sire]. Pigs from the LYH crossbreed were also classified as either carriers or non-carriers of the RN− allele. In the crossbreeds i

The hoverfly Criorhina ranunculi – a biodiversity indicator at the landscape level?

The hoverfly Criorhina ranunculi – a biodiversity indicator at the landscape level? The hoverfly Criorhina ranunculi is rare and red-listed in Sweden, but it may be overlooked. I made a detailed inventory of the species in the parish of Stenbrohult, southern Sweden, where the species was found at nine localities in 2006, at one of these with at least ten individuals. The study area, with many othe

Historiemedvetande. Elevers tidsförståelse i en skolkontext

The main aim of the study is to explain how pupils´ consciousness of history in comprehensive school is formed and created by teaching. A second aim is to emphasize and to problematise the prerequisites for developing the consciousness of history through teaching. The empirical data consists of three parts: 1. Pupil's associations to the concepts of "time", "past" and "future". 2. Essays (national

Glucose and insulin responses to porridge and gruel meals intended for infants

Objective: The objective was to determine the glycaemic index (GI) and insulinaemic index (II) of some common products intended for infants; that is, three commercial porridges and one gruel. Also, the influence of added fruit components to porridge on postprandial metabolic responses was studied by comparing corresponding data with a matched model product without fruit. Design: The volunteers wer

Is V2 really that hard to acquire for second language learners? On current universalist L2 claims and their empirical underpinnings.

This paper investigates the nonnative acquisition of German verb placement on the basis of new, quantified, empirical data from Swedish post-puberty learners. Contrary to existing claims in the literature on the acquisition of V2 languages (here, German), there is no evidence for a universal developmental sequence for verb placement. Rather, non-subject-initial V2 transfers from the L1 grammar (he

Detection of malformations in chromosomally normal fetuses by routine ultrasound at 12 or 18 weeks of gestation - a randomised controlled trial in 39 572 pregnancies

Objective To compare the antenatal detection rate of malformations in chromosomally normal fetuses between a strategy of offering one routine ultrasound examination at 12 gestational weeks (gws) and a strategy of offering one routine examination at 18 gws. Design Randomised controlled trial. Setting Multicentre trial including eight hospitals. Population A total of 39 572 unselected pregnant women

Desiring Agency

In this paper we explore the relation between agency and the (pathological) inclinations that lurk beneath the agent’s acts. We draw on the work of Jacques Lacan to argue that an adequate understanding of agency demands attentiveness to desires, the unconscious and the intimate relation between the subject and the Other. Based on some of the key features of the Lacanian subject we suggest agency t

Light exotic isotopes: recent beam developments and physics applications at ISOLDE

This paper is divided in three parts: (i) the measurement of yields and decay losses of Li and Be isotopes released from a thin foil tantalum target at the CERN/ISOLDE PS-Booster; (ii) results from β-decay experiments on 12Be and 14Be, an improved half-life of 21.49(3) ms has been obtained for 12Be; (iii) the β-decay of 9C. An outline of the analysis procedure to determine the branching at high ex

Pappersomslag och pappersband i arkivens samlingar

Paper wrappers and paper bindings have been used to preserve written and archival documents of all kinds. In the manuscript collection of Ericsberg (National Archives, Sweden) we find many examples of how written material was gathered and protected by simple paper bindings. Paper bindings are used as sketchbooks, for writing and calculating, as diaries, and as notebooks of administrative and econo

Semiconductor nanowires for 0D and 1D physics and applications

During the last 5 years the potential for applications of semiconductor nanowires has grown rapidly via the development of methods for catalytically induced nanowire growth using the, so-called vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) growth mode. The VLS method offers a high degree of control of parameters such as position, diameter, length and composition, including the realization of atomically abrupt heterost

Gamma-ray Spectroscopy of the Doubly Magic Nucleus 56Ni

The doubly magic N = Z nucleus Ni-56 has been investigated with two fusion-evaporation reactions; Ca-40(Si-28, 3 alpha)Ni-56 at a beam energy of 122MeV and Si-28(S-32, 2p2n)Ni-56 at 130MeV. To detect gamma-rays in coincidence with evaporated particles the Ge-detector array Gammasphere was used in conjunction with the charged-particle detector system, Microball and a 1 pi neutron detector array. Re

Presentation of laboratory and sonoclot variables using principal component analysis: identification of hypo- and hypercoagulation in the HELLP syndrome

The HELLP (Hemolysis, Elevated Liver enzyme, and Low Platelet) syndrome requires close monitoring of rapid changes in hemostasis. A bedside viscoelastic test--Sonoclot--was used together with coagulation, liver and hemolysis laboratory analyses in three parturients with the HELLP syndrome up to 10 days postpartum. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to reduce the dimensionality of this mul
