Reading information graphics: The Role of Spatial Proximity and Dual Attentional Guidance.

In a naturalistic newspaper reading study, two pairs of information graphics have been designed to study the effects of a) the spatial contiguity principle and b) the dual scripting principle by means of eye tracking measurements. Our data clearly show that different spatial layouts have a significant effect on readers’ eye movement behaviour. An integrated format with spatial contiguity between t

Nanoimprint lithography for the fabrication of interdigitated cantilever arrays

We report on the realization of a novel interdigitated cantilever array with electrostatic control of the shape of the interdigitated array. It consists of an array of SiO2/metal double-finger cantilevers in a grating configuration together with an electrical connection part. The complete grating structure is fabricated with nanoimprint lithography, UV lithography and reactive ion etching. The pat

Bounding Volume Hierarchies of Slab Cut Balls

We introduce a bounding volume hierarchy based on the Slab Cut Ball. This novel type of enclosing shape provides an attractive balance between tightness of fit, cost of overlap testing, and memory requirement. The hierarchy construction algorithm includes a new method for the construction of tight bounding volumes in worst case O(n) time, which means our tree data structure is constructed in O(n l

Haemophilia B mutations in Sweden: a population-based study of mutational heterogeneity

The present series comprises all families (n = 77) with haemophilia B in Sweden and may be considered to be representative for the purposes of a population-based study of mutational heterogeneity. The 77 families (38 severe, 10 moderate, 29 mild) had 51 different mutations in total. Thirteen families had total, partial or small deletions, two had mutations in the promoter, eight families had splic

Air sampling of its pheromone to monitor the occurrence of Osmoderma eremita, a threatened beetle inhabiting hollow trees

Osmoderma eremita is a threatened scarab beetle living in the hollows of old deciduous trees and is regarded as an umbrella species of the beetle fauna associated with this habitat. Several methods like pitfall trapping and wood mould sampling have been used to monitor the occurrence of O. eremita, but these methods cannot be applied for trees with certain characteristics. Recently, (R)-(+)--decal

Thermodynamics studies of designed ligands binding to Cel7A using partial-filling capillary electrophoresis

A convenient experimental method for thermodynamical studies based on partial-filling affinity CE is presented. The advantages of this approach are the possibility to determine binding energies from relatively weak interactions as well as the small amounts of samples consumed. In order to explore the affinity and selectivity of the cellobiolrydrolase Cel7A, a number of propranolol analogues were r

Increased level of soluble HLA class I antigens in systemic lupus erythematosus: correlation with anti-DNA antibodies and leukopenia

The concentration of soluble HLA class I (sHLA-I) was measured by ELISA in serum samples from 30 well-characterised SLE patients at high and low disease activity states and from 100 healthy controls. HLA-A allotypes in the patients were analysed by a PCR-based typing technique. A higher level of sHLA-I was found in SLE patient sera both at high and low disease activity than in controls (P< 0.001).

Entedoninae (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) associated with gall-inducing insects (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) in Panama

A new species of Ametallon Ashmead, A. carinatum sp. n. and five new species of Chrysonotomyia Ashmead, C. dussiae sp. n., C. longicaudata sp. n., C. machaeriae sp. n., C. unimaculata sp. n. and C. claviger sp. n. (Eulophidae: Entedoninae) are described from Panama. New host associations are recorded for Ametallon gorgonaense Hansson, Chrysonotomyia auripunctata (Ashmead), Chrysonotomyia galbina H

Enzymatic route to alkyl glycosides having oligomeric head groups

Cyclodextrin glycosyl transferase (CGTase) from Bacillus macerans was used to catalyse the coupling of alpha-cyclodextrin to alkyl beta-glycosides. The acceptor substrate dodecyl beta-maltoside was thus converted to dodecyl beta-D-maltooctaoside. Further coupling steps and disproportionation reactions occurred, but by optimisation of the reaction time, a yield of 50% of the primary coupling produc

Combined Use of H2SO4 and SO2 Impregnation for Steam Pretreatment of Spruce in Ethanol Production

Fuel ethanol can be produced from softwood through hydrolysis in an enzymatic process. Prior to enzymatic hydrolysis of the softwood, pretreatment is necessary. In this study, two-step steam pretreatment employing dilute H2SO4 impregnation in the first step and SO2 impregnation in the second step, to improve the overall sugar and ethanol yield, was investigated. The first pretreatment step was per

Cooperation between MASP-1 and MASP-2 in the generation of C3 convertase through the MBL pathway

The complement system is an important part of the innate immune system. Three pathways, the classical, the alternative and the lectin pathway, lead to the cleavage of complement factor C3, a central event in the activation of the complement system. We investigated the deposition of C3b (solid-phase C3 activation product) on a mannan-coated surface at high concentration of human serum (17%). At the

Parents' experience of early discharge from hospital after birth in Sweden.

OBJECTIVE: to investigate the factors that influence the experience of mothers and fathers when they have chosen to return home, earlier than is the normal routine, following the birth of their baby. DESIGN: a qualitative study, using open interviews, was undertaken. The text of the transcripts was coded and categorised according to the grounded theory method using constant comparative analysis. S

Self-respect, dignity and confidence: conceptions of integrity among male patients

Background. Integrity is a complex and important concept in ethical reasoning and in nursing care. Integrity is part of being a human being, a wholeness, and in this sense it also refers to health. Preserving patients' integrity is an important aspect of nursing care, as a number of situations arise in which they can feel threatened or violated. Integrity can also refer to acting according to gene

Mechanisms of adaptation to nitrosative stress in Bacillus subtilis

Bacteria use a number of mechanisms for coping with the toxic effects exerted by nitric oxide (NO) and its derivatives. Here we show that the flavohemoglobin encoded by the hmp gene has a vital role in an adaptive response to protect the soil bacterium Bacillus subtilis from nitrosative stress. We further show that nitrosative stress induced by the nitrosonium cation donor sodium nitroprusside (SN

A new version of the stream cipher SNOW

In 2000, the stream cipher SNOW was proposed. A few attacks followed, indicating certain weaknesses in the design. In this paper we propose a new version of SNOW, called SNOW 2.0. The new version of the cipher does not only appear to be more secure, but its implementation is also a bit faster in software.

On the Interior Stress Problem for Elastic Bodies

The classic Sherman-Lauricella integral equation and an integral equation due to Muskhelishvili for the interior stress problem are modified. The modified formulations differ from the classic ones in several respects: Both modifications are based on uniqueness conditions with clear physical interpretations and, more importantly, they do not require the arbitrary placement of a point inside the com

Being different and vulnerable: experiences of immigrant African women who have been circumcised and sought maternity care in Sweden

The purpose of the study was to explore the encounters with the health care system in Sweden of women from Somalia, Eritrea, and Sudan who have been genitally cut. A qualitative study was performed through interviews with 22 women originally from Somalia, Sudan, and Eritrea who were living in Sweden. The women experienced being different and vulnerable, suffering from being abandoned and mutilated

Effects of the pyrethroid insecticide cypermethrin on a freshwater community studied under field conditions. II. Direct and indirect effects on the species composition

The effects of cypermethrin, a commonly used pyrethroid insecticide, were studied in small in situ enclosures situated in an eutrophic lake over an 11-day period. The experimental design used a regression principle that included three untreated controls and a gradient of six unreplicated cypermethrin concentrations, ranging from 0.01 to 6 mug/l. This paper is the second in a series of two and desc

Gas analysis within remote porous targets using LIDAR multi-scatter techniques

Light detection and ranging (LIDAR) experiments are normally pursued for range resolved atmospheric gas measurements or for analysis of solid target surfaces using fluorescence of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. In contrast, we now demonstrate the monitoring of free gas enclosed in pores of materials, subject to impinging laser radiation, employing the photons emerging back to the surface la
