Factors limiting physical working capacity in predialytic uraemic patients

The exercise capacity of 20 predialytic uraemic patients (mean age 43 ± 12 years) was studied prospectively. Nine of these patients were examined twice in a longitudinal study. The maximal working capacity, measured by standardized exercise test on a bicycle ergometer, averaged 74 ± 19% of the expected normal. Normal exercise ECG were registered in 16 out of 20 patients. Total hemoglobin/kg body w

Open-loop optimal control of batch chromatographic separation processes using direct collocation

This contribution presents a novel model-based methodology for open-loop optimal control of batch high-pressure liquid chromatographic (HPLC) separation processes. The framework allows for simultaneous optimization of target component recovery yield and production rate with respect to a parameterization of the input elution trajectory and fractionating interval endpoints. The proposed methodology

Comparing Lagrangian and Eulerian models for CO 2 transport-a step towards Bayesian inverse modeling using WRF/STILT-VPRM

We present simulations of atmospheric CO 2 concentrations provided by two modeling systems, run at high spatial resolution: the Eulerian-based Weather Research Forecasting (WRF) model and the Lagrangian-based Stochastic Time-Inverted Lagrangian Transport (STILT) model, both of which are coupled to a diagnostic biospheric model, the Vegetation Photosynthesis and Respiration Model (VPRM). The consis

The regional aerosol-climate model REMO-HAM

REMO-HAM is a new regional aerosol-climate model. It is based on the REMO regional climate model and includes most of the major aerosol processes. The structure for aerosol is similar to the global aerosol-climate model ECHAM5-HAM, for example the aerosol module HAM is coupled with a two-moment stratiform cloud scheme. On the other hand, REMO-HAM does not include an online coupled aerosol-radiatio

Psychological well-being over time among informal caregivers caring for persons with dementia living at home

Objectives: To investigate informal caregivers’ psychological well-being and predicted increase in psychological well-being, when caring for persons with dementia (PwDs) living at home, related to caregiver, PwD and formal care (FC) factors. Method: A cohort study at baseline and 3 months’ follow-up in eight European countries. Caregivers included (n = 1223) were caring for PwDs aged ≥ 65 years at

Sn-seeded GaAs nanowires grown by MOVPE

It has previously been reported that in situ formed Sn nanoparticles can successfully initiate GaAs nanowire growth with a self-assembled radial p–n junction composed of a Sn-doped n-type core and a C-doped p-type shell. In this paper, we investigate the effect of fundamental growth parameters on the morphology and crystal structure of Sn-seeded GaAs nanowires. We show that growth can be achieved

The electrostatic persistence length calculated from Monte Carlo, variational and perturbation methods

Monte Carlo simulations and variational calculations using a Gaussian ansatz are applied to a model consisting of a flexible linear polyelectrolyte chain as well as to an intrinsically stiff chain with up to 1000 charged monomers. Addition of salt is treated implicitly through a screened Coulomb potential for the electrostatic interactions. For the flexible model the electrostatic persistence leng
