Computational Methods for Optimal Control of Hybrid Systems

This thesis aims to find algorithms for optimal control of hybrid systems and explore them in sufficient detail to be able to implement the ideas in computational tools. By hybrid systems is meant systems with interacting continuous and discrete dynamics. Code for computations has been developed in parallel to the theory. The optimal control methods studied in this thesis are global, i.e. the ent

Isolation, crystallisation, and preliminary X-ray analysis of the bovine mitochondrial EF-Tu:GDP and EF-Tu:EF-Ts complexes

Previous studies have shown that when bovine mitochondrial elongation factor Ts (EF-Ts) is expressed in Escherichia coli, it forms a tightly associated complex with E. coli elongation factor Tu (EF-Tu). In contrast to earlier experiments, purification of free mitochondrial EF-Ts was accomplished under nondenaturing conditions since only about 60% of the expressed EF-Ts copurified with E. coli EF-T

Rotenone-insensitive NAD(P)H dehydrogenases in plants: Immunodetection and distribution of native proteins in mitochondria.

Antisera produced against peptides deduced from potato nda1 and ndb1, homologues of yeast genes for mitochondrial rotenone-insensitive NADH dehydrogenases, recognise respective proteins upon expression in Escherichiacoli. In western blots of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) mitochondrial proteins, the NDB and NDA antibodies specifically detect polypeptides of 61 and 48 kDa, respectively. The proteins

First Observation of Excitation Across the 100Sn Core

Excited states of nuclei near the doubly-magic nucleus Sn-100 were studied with the Ni-58+Cr-50 reaction. The experimental setup consisted of the GAMMASPHERE array augmented with light charged-particle and neutron detectors. Excited states were identified for the first time in the proton emitting nucleus Sb-105. Excitations across the N=Z=50 doubly closed shell were observed in Cd-99 and In-101. S

Effect of maternal age on uterine flow impedance

Purpose. This study was conducted to determine possible maternal age-related changes in uterine artery impedance in normal late pregnancy. Patients and Methods. In a cross-sectional design study, Doppler velocimetry of the uterine vessels was performed in 884 pregnant women with normal, late, singleton pregnancies. We hypothesized that maternal age is associated with changes in uterine blood flow

"Vi kan inte göra hipp som happ" : Åklagares formuleringar av en objektiv ordning

The claim that politics, economics, and personal and social values are relevant in judicial decision making is not new. However, a shared view among legal practitioners tends to be that most cases are decided in an objective fashion. Drawing on material from two different studies (one on battered women and one on bribery), this paper investigates how prosecutors rely on and actively uphold an inst

A 2.2 GHz CMOS VCO with inductive degeneration noise suppression

A 1.4 V, 9 mA monolithic LC-tank voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) fabricated in a standard 0.35 μm CMOS process is presented. The VCO is tunable between 2.0 GHz and 2.37 GHz, and displays a phase noise between -140 dBc/Hz and -138 dBc/Hz at a 3 MHz offset frequency across the whole tuning range. This low phase noise is achieved through the use of an on-chip LC filter and an off-chip low frequen

Inhibition of dendropoiesis by tumor derived and purified prostate specific antigen

Purpose: Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is a serine protease produced by the prostate gland at high concentrations. Serum PSA may be significantly elevated in prostate cancer and benign prostatic diseases. It has recently become evident that, in addition to being a tissue and/or serum marker, PSA may also have biological effects. Despite the voluminous literature on this biomarker in the diagnosi

Mortality and cancer morbidity in cohorts of asbestos cement workers and referents

Total and cause specific mortality and cancer morbidity were studied among 1929 asbestos cement workers with an estimated median cumulative exposure of 2.3 fibre (f)-years/ml (median intensity 1.2 f/ml, predominantly chrysotile). A local reference cohort of 1233 industrial workers and non-case referents from the exposed cohort were used for comparisons. The risk for pleural mesothelioma was signif

Solid-state single photon sources: light collection strategies

We examine the problem of efficiently collecting the photons produced by solid-state single photon sources. The extent of the problem is first established with the aid of simple physical concepts. Several approaches to improving the collection efficiency are then examined and are broadly categorized into two types. First are those based on cavity quantum dynamics, in which the pathways by which th
