Peri-procedural Risk with Urgent Carotid Artery Stenting: A Population based Swedvasc Study.

Current European Society for Vascular Surgery guidelines recommend that patients with a symptomatic carotid stenosis should be operated on within 14 days of onset of symptoms. Recent reports indicate that carotid endarterectomy (CEA) within 2 days of a neurological event may be associated with a higher peri-procedural risk of stroke. Whether urgent carotid artery stenting (CAS) carries a similar h

Hypoxia Sustains Cyanobacteria Blooms in the Baltic Sea

Nutrient over-enrichment is one of the classic triggering mechanisms for the occurrence of cyanobacteria blooms in aquatic ecosystems. In the Baltic Sea, cyanobacteria regularly occur in the late summer months and form nuisance accumulations in surface waters and their abundance has intensified significantly in the past 50 years attributed to human-induced eutrophication. However, the natural occu

Chronic glucokinase activation reduces glycaemia and improves glucose tolerance in high-fat diet fed mice.

Glucokinase (GK) plays a key role in maintaining glucose homeostasis by promoting insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells and increasing hepatic glucose uptake. Here we investigate the effects of acute and chronic GK activation on glucose tolerance and insulin secretion in mice with diet-induced insulin resistance. In the acute study, a small molecule GK activator (GKA71) was administered to

THE ANTIOXIDANT CAPACITY OF MILK - THE APPLICATION OF DIFFERENT METHODS in vitro AND in vivo.

Milk contains a wide array of compounds with established or putative pro— or anti—oxidant function. The functions of these compounds have been intensively studied. This review focusses on some important aspects in this wide field namely the methodology for measurement of the total antioxidant capacity (TAC), the content of TAC and some related compounds in human and animal milks and infant formula

«An Unintended Effect of the Introduction of the Public Support Systems» – Film policy, film support and the contemporary Scandinavian production landscape

This article is concerned with the conditions for contemporary European film production as exemplified by the particular example of Scandinavia and Sweden. The investigation is a comparative survey where particular statistics, on contemporary as well as historical audiovisual production, serves as a base for a compare and contrast study. More specifically, an attempt is made to assess and relate s

Association of hypogonadism with vitamin D status: the European Male Ageing Study

Objective: Interrelationships between hormones of the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular (HPT) axis, hypogonadism, vitamin D and seasonality remain poorly defined. We investigated whether HPT axis hormones and hypogonadism are associated with serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) in men. Design and methods: Cross-sectional survey of 3369 community-dwelling men aged 40-79 years in eight Euro

Reassessing the variability in atmospheric H2 using the two-way nested TM5 model

This work reassesses the global atmospheric budget of H2 with the TM5 model. The recent adjustment of the calibration scale for H2 translates into a change in the tropospheric burden. Furthermore, the ECMWF Reanalysis-Interim (ERA-Interim) data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) used in this study show slower vertical transport than the operational data used before

Lyme borreliosis: Clinical case definitions for diagnosis and management in Europe

P>Lyme borreliosis, caused by spirochaetes of the Borrelia burgdorferi genospecies complex, is the most commonly reported tick-borne infection in Europe and North America. The non-specific nature of many of its clinical manifestations presents a diagnostic challenge and concise case definitions are essential for its satisfactory management. Lyme borreliosis is very similar in Europe and North Amer

Use of tramadol in early pregnancy and congenital malformation risk.

Only few studies exist regarding the risk of a teratogenic effect of tramadol when used in early pregnancy. Using the Swedish Medical Birth Register, women (deliveries in 1997-2013) who had reported the use of tramadol in early pregnancy were identified. Maternal characteristics and concomitant drug use were analyzed. Among 1 682 846 women (1 797 678 infants), 1751 (1776 infants) had used tramadol

J/psi production and nuclear effects in p-Pb collisions at=5.02 TeV

Inclusive J/psi production has been studied with the ALICE detector in p-Pb collisions at the nucleon-nucleon center of mass energy = 5.02 TeV at the CERN LHC. The measurement is performed in the center of mass rapidity domains 2.03 < y (cms) < 3.53 and -4.46 < y (cms) < -2.96, down to zero transverse momentum, studying the mu (+) mu (-) decay mode. In this paper, the J/psi production cross sectio

Inelastic Neutron Scattering and Density Functional Theory- Molecular Dynamics Study of Si Dynamics in Ti3SiC2

Observed differences between measured and calculated elastic constants for Ti3SiC2 are investigated using Density Functional Theory and Inelastic Neutron Scattering. The agreement between the calculated lattice dynamics and the dynamics measured by inelastic neutron scattering is considered good except at energies below similar to 20meV where discrepancies suggest anharmonic potentials. This sugge

Prospective study of genital human papillomaviruses and nonmelanoma skin cancer.

Genital high-risk human papillomaviruses (HPVs) cause cervical cancer and are also found in a small proportion of nonmelanoma skin cancers (NMSCs). We used cancer registry linkages to follow the 856,000 serum donors included in the Southern Sweden Microbiology Biobank or the Janus Biobank in Norway, for incident skin cancers occurring up to 30 years after serum donation. Serum samples taken before

Practical estimation of high dimensional stochastic differential mixed-effects models

Stochastic differential equations (SDEs) are established tools for modeling physical phenomena whose dynamics are affected by random noise. By estimating parameters of an SDE, intrinsic randomness of a system around its drift can be identified and separated from the drift itself. When it is of interest to model dynamics within a given population, i.e. to model simultaneously the performance of sev

Intraneuronal A beta Accumulation, Amyloid Plaques, and Synapse Pathology in Alzheimer's Disease

Background: beta-Amyloid (A beta) plaques are a pathological hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and multiple lines of evidence have linked A beta with AD. However, synapse loss is known as the best pathological correlate of cognitive impairment in AD, and intraneuronal A beta accumulation has been shown to precede plaque pathology. The progression of A beta accumulation to synapse loss and plaqu

Autoimmune diseases and subsequent urological cancers.

PURPOSE: To examine the subsequent risk and prognosis of urological cancers among individuals diagnosed with autoimmune(AI) diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed systematically the risk and prognosis of prostate, kidney and bladder cancers among individuals diagnosed with any of 33 different AI diseases based on nation-wide Swedish database covering years 1964 through 2008. Standardized inc

Challenges in coordination: differences in perception of civil and military organizations by comparing international scientific literature and field experiences

The extreme pressure resulting from modern-day disasters in terms of severe shortages of resources, mass casualties, infrastructure breakdown, large-scale damage and their impact necessitate coordination between all the agencies involved in disaster response. Better coordination in international disaster response operations will make them more effective in organizing the different phases of relief

Results and recommendations from an intercomparison of six Hygroscopicity-TDMA systems

The performance of six custom-built Hygrocopicity-Tandem Differential Mobility Analyser (H-TDMA) systems was investigated in the frame of an international calibration and intercomparison workshop held in Leipzig, February 2006. The goal of the workshop was to harmonise H-TDMA measurements and develop recommendations for atmospheric measurements and their data evaluation. The H-TDMA systems were co
