Compiling Java for Real-Time Systems

Our everyday appliances ranging from toys to vehicles, as well as the equipment used to manufacture them, contain an increasing number of embedded computers. Embedded software often implement functionality that is crucial for the operation of the device, resulting in a variety of timing requirements and resource utilization constraints to be fulfilled. Industrial competition and the ever increasin

dUTPase from Escherichia coli; high-level expression and one-step purification

The dut gene, which encodes Eseherichia coli deoxyuridine 5'-triphosphate nucleotidohydrolase (dUTPase), has been recloned to increase overexpression of the enzyme and to enable simplification of the purification protocol into a one-step procedure. The gene was cloned into the vector pET-3a and expressed in E. coli BL21(DE3) pLysS under the control of a bacteriophage T7 promotor. Induction results

Net ecosystem productivity and peat accumulation in a Siberian Aapa mire

Net ecosystem productivity (NEP) was studied in a bog located in the middle taiga of Siberia using two approaches, the accumulation of peat above the hypocotyl of pine trees, and the eddy covariance flux methodology. NEP was 0.84 tC ha-1 yr-1 using the peat accumulation method; it was 0.43–0.62 tC ha-1 yr-1 using eddy covariance over three growing seasons. These data were compared with NEP of the

WOMEN WITH IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME. Aspects of quality of life and health.

Delstudie 2. Utbildning av kvinnor med IBS. Delstudie 3. Hälsoaspekter i relation till användandet av Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common, worldwide, functional disorder affecting a significant number of people, predominantly women. Etiology and pathophysiology is insufficiently understood, but the research over the past decade has led to progress in the understanding of IBS, and it is generally accepted that the symptoms of IBS are multidetermined. However, management of IBS is still a cha

Behandlingsprogram vid ascites. Rekommendationer fran Svensk forening for gastroenterologi och gastrointestinal endoskopi

As ascites is related to liver cirrhosis in 80% of the patients, the present therapeutic guidelines are focused on ascites in liver cirrhosis. A combination of spironolactone and furosemide is recommended as first line therapy in patients with mild to moderate ascites and is effective in 90% of patients. In patients with pronounced or tense ascites, first line treatment is total paracentesis with

Suppression of serum TSH by Graves' Ig: evidence for a functional pituitary TSH receptor

Antithyroid treatment for Graves' hyperthyroidism restores euthyroidism clinically within 1-2 months, but it is well known that TSH levels can remain suppressed for many months despite normal free T(4) and T(3) levels. This has been attributed to a delayed recovery of the pituitary-thyroid axis. However, we recently showed that the pituitary contains a TSH receptor through which TSH secretion may

Using Virtual Reality for Participatory Design and Brain Injury Rehabilitation

Denna arbetsmetod har utvecklats och tIn this thesis, the usability of Virtual Reality (VR) has been investigated and developed within two applications: participatory design of workplaces and brain injury rehabilitation. In the first application, VR is used in combination with full scale modelling, drama and democratic meetings in an Envisionment Workshop. This workshop has been developed and tested through several real workplace int

Metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) scintigraphy and computed tomography (CT) in clinical practice. Primary and secondary evaluation for localization of phaeochromocytomas

OBJECTIVE: To determine the diagnostic value of metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) scintigraphy compared with computed tomography (CT) for the localization of phaeochromocytomas in clinical practice. DESIGN: Retrospective comparison between MIBG scintigrams and CT for localization of phaeochromocytomas in all patients successively examined with MIBG scintigraphy in Malmo from 1984 until January 1997.

Femtosecond pump–probe investigation of primary photoinduced processes in C60–Sn nanostructures

Investigation of photoinduced processes in different C60–Sn nanostructures excited by 150 fs laser pulses at 400 nm (109 W/cm2) was performed with femtosecond supercontinuum probing of difference absorption and reflection in the spectral range of 400–1600 nm. The dynamics of relaxation are quite different for various nanostructures depending on the deposition mode and the ratio of tin and fulleren

Sugar preferences and feeding strategies in the hawkmoth Macroglossain stellatarum

Hummingbird hawkmoths were tested for their preferences for different types of sugar. In triple choice tests, moths sucked for longer periods from sucrose than from fructose and glucose. Naive moths released in a large flight cage and monitored over 24 days, drank on average 137 mul sucrose, 67 mul fructose and 7 mul glucose daily. In an independent test, moths spent more time feeding from sucrose

Diagnostic and prognostic aspects of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies in systemic vasculitis

Primary systemic vasculitis is associated with a high mortality if left untreated and it is essential to make the diagnosis before permanent organ damage has occurred. In this thesis the diagnostic and prognostic significance of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) in systemic vasculitis is investigated. The clinical significance of a capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) bas

Low-impact exercise during pregnancy - a study of safety.

Background. Exercise is an important part of many women's lives. Women are often advised to refrain from physical exercise during pregnancy. The reason given is mainly safety, i.e. fear of maternal hyperthermia, which is known to be related to neural tube defects. However, exercise during pregnancy has not been shown to be related to hyperthermia. Objective. To study temperature and oxygen satura

Harmonic morphisms from complex projective spaces

In this paper we study harmonic morphisms emptyv :U sub CopfP m rarrN 2 from open subsets of complex projective spaces to Riemann surfaces. We construct many new examples of such maps which are not holomorphic with respect to the standard Kähler structure on CopfP m.

Essays on Exchange Rates, Exports and Growth in Developing Countries

This dissertation is a collection of four essays, where the unifying theme is how different exchange rate regimes have affected developing countries’ economic performance in different respects. In particular, we analyse the consequences on developing countries’ exports, but also, to some extent, the effects on their economic growth. Chapter 1 serves as an introductory chapter and provides a backgr

Accuracy of distributed multipoles and polarizabilities: Comparison between the LoProp and MpProp models

Localized multipole moments up to the fifth moment as well as localized dipole polarizabilities are calculated with the MpProp and the newly developed LoProp methods for a total of 20 molecules, predominantly derived from amino acids. A comparison of electrostatic potentials calculated from the multipole expansion obtained by the two methods with ab initio results shows that both methods reproduce
