C-band heteromorphism in breast cancer patients
The pattern of heteromorphism in the C-band-positive constitutive heterochromatin of human chromosomes #1, #9, and #16 was studied in peripheral lymphocytes of 54 breast cancer patients and 78 control individuals. The parameters of the heterochromatic regions analyzed were relative size, symmetry-asymmetry within homologous pairs, and prevalence of inversions. Significant differences between the t

Global outsourcing of carbon emissions 1995–2009: A reassessment
Increasing global production fragmentation allows for outsourcing of emissions, which may undermine national climate policies. Researchers focusing on the gap between consumption-based and production-based emissions have concluded that developed countries are systematically outsourcing emissions to developing countries. However, asymmetries in emissions embodied in trade may emerge due to differen

Incidence of cardiovascular events in patients with stabilized coronary heart disease : the EUROASPIRE IV follow-up study
The EUROASPIRE surveys (EUROpean Action on Secondary Prevention through Intervention to Reduce Events) demonstrated that most European coronary patients fail to achieve lifestyle, risk factor and therapeutic targets. Here we report on the 2-year incidence of hard cardiovascular (CV) endpoints in the EUROASPIRE IV cohort. EUROASPIRE IV (2012–2013) was a large cross-sectional study undertaken at 78

Effective Interactions and Colloidal Stability of Bovine γ-Globulin in Solution
Interactions and phase behavior of γ-globulins are of fundamental interest in biophysical and pharmaceutical research, as these are among the most abundant proteins in blood plasma. In this work, we report the characterization of the oligomeric state of bovine γ-globulin, the effective protein–protein interactions, and the colloidal stability in aqueous solution as a function of protein concentrat
Charge-controlled metastable liquid-liquid phase separation in protein solutions as a universal pathway towards crystallization
We demonstrate that a metastable liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) in protein aqueous solutions can be induced by multivalent metal ions at room temperature. We determine the salt and protein partitioning in the two coexisting phases. The structure factor obtained by small angle X-ray scattering provides direct evidence for a short-ranged attraction, which leads to the metastability of the LLP
Assessing the Sustainability of Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Systems in Rwanda
Kigali city, the capital of Rwanda, relies on decentralized, on-site, wastewater systems due to the absence of central sewerage systems and the limited finances to construct sustainable sanitation infrastructures. However, the city has increasingly shown failures in managing these on-site systems either at individual or collective levels. This study aims at assessing the sustainability of the oper
BREAST CANCER AND ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES
A biological marker, strongly associated with early oral contraceptive use, for the selection of a high risk group for premenopausal breast cancer
In a population-based group of women, consecutively diagnosed, with premenopausal breast cancer there was a significant correlation between tumour size and plasma prolactin (r=0.30;P

Street-level priority-setting: The role of discretion in implementation of research, development, and innovation priorities
Research on priority-setting for research, development, and innovation (RDI) often does not take into account the many challenges associated with translating priorities into RDI programs and projects. Such implementation challenges are typically handled by RDI program officers at funding agencies i.e. those officers that manage RDI programs and projects. To address this challenge, this paper utili
Solar UV radiation and microbial life in the atmosphere
Many microorganisms are alive while suspended in the atmosphere, and some seem to be metabolically active during their time there. One of the most important factors threatening their life and activity is solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Quantitative understanding of the spatial and temporal survival patterns in the atmosphere, and of the ultimate deposition of microbes to the surface, is limited
