No improvement in outcome of nationwide extremely low birth weight infant populations between 1996-1997 and 1999-2000
OBJECTIVE. Our goal was to investigate whether outcome in extremely low birth weight infants changes over time in Finland. PATIENTS AND METHODS. All infants with a birth weight < 1000 g born in Finland in 1996 - 1997 and 1999 - 2000 were included in the study. Perinatal and follow-up data were collected in a national extremely low birth weight infant research register. Data concerning cerebral pal
Differential proteinase expression by Pseudomonas aeruginosa derived from chronic leg ulcers
Pseudomonas aeruginosa colonizes 20-30% of all venous leg ulcers. Hypothetically, P. aeraginosa could release proteases and cytotoxic substances in the environment of chronic ulcers, thus negatively affecting the wound-healing activity in this patient group. Here we show that P. aeruginosa isolates from leg ulcers exhibit a highly variable expression of the proteinases elastase and alkaline protei
High-spin structure in Er-157 up to and above band termination
The high-spin structure of Er-157 has been greatly expanded using the Gammasphere spectrometer to investigate the Cd-114(Ca-48,5n) reaction at 215 MeV. Many new transitions have been placed in a greatly augmented level scheme up to spin 40h with many collective rotational sequences established. With increasing angular momentum, this nucleus undergoes a Coriolis-induced shape transition from a defo
A Landscape of Left-Overs : Changing Conceptions of Place and Environment among Mi'kmaq Indians of Eastern Canada
The Mi’kmaq culture hero Kluskap here serves as a key persona in discussing issues such as traditions, changing conceptions of land, and human-environmental relations. In order not to depict Mi’kmaq culture as timeless, two important periods in its history are examined. The first study
Stylistic Fronting
If stylistic fronting is analyzed as feature-driven movement into an articulated CP-domain, in particular FocusP in the sense of Rizzi (1997), it is possible to account for two facts about stylistic fronting that so far have received little attention, namely that stylistic fronting has semantic effects and that there are differences in stylistic fronting in subordinate clauses with no overt subjec
Potential selection for female choice in Viola tricolor
That sexual selection can be an active force in plant evolution is still under debate. When the number of pollen grains deposited onto a stigma exceeds the number of available ovules, competition among pollen grains for fertilizations will result in selection on traits that increase siring ability (e.g. pollen tube growth rate). The pistil can be regarded as an arena for pollen competition, where
Interobserver agreement in defecography--an international study
BACKGROUND: Defecography is considered to be an essential investigation in the evaluation of functional anorectal disorders, but the agreement between observers from different clinical centers has never been evaluated. METHODS: 14 defecographic studies were selected aimed to cover the most relevant defecographic findings responsible for disordered defecation. Eight studies were considered unequivo
Long-term clinical effects of a peritoneal dialysis fluid with less glucose degradation products
BACKGROUND: Glucose degradation products (GDPs) are cytotoxic in vitro and potentially toxic in vivo during peritoneal dialysis (PD). We are presenting the results of a two-year randomized clinical trial of a new PD fluid, produced in a two-compartment bag and designed to minimize heat-induced glucose degradation while producing a near neutral pH. The effects of the new fluid over two years of tre

Burchnall-Chaundy theory for q-difference operators and q-deformed Heisenberg algebras
This paper is devoted to an extension of Burchnall-Chaundy theory on the interplay between algebraic geometry and commuting differential operators to the case of q-difference operators.

Search for Hyperdeformation in 146,147Gd
A search was undertaken to look for evidence of hyperdeformation in Gd-146,Gd-147. Three experiments employing Gammasphere for gamma-ray detection coupled with the Microball for channel selection via charged particle detection were carried out with increasing detection sensitivity and statistics. No definitive evidence for band structures that could be assigned to hyperdeformation could be found.
Another attack on A5/1
A5/1 is a stream cipher used in the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) standard. Several time-memory tradeoff attacks against A5/1 have been proposed, most notably the recent attack by Biryukov, Shamir, and Wagner, which can break A5/1 in seconds using huge precomputation time and memory. This correspondence presents a completely different attack on A5/1, based on ideas from correlation
Characterization of anti-GBM antibodies involved in Goodpasture's syndrome
Characterization of anti-GBM antibodies involved in Goodpasture's syndrome. Goodpasture's syndrome is a life threatening autoimmune kidney disease. The patients have autoantibodies to the glomerular basement membrane, which are specific for the C-terminal domain of type IV collagen (NC1). The major antigen has been localized to the alpha3(IV)-chain. We have investigated sera from 44 patients with
Response of Bolivian Altiplano Lakes to Seasonal and Annual Climate Variations
The Bolivian Altiplano is situated between two mountain ranges, the western and eastern central Andes in South America. It has two major lakes, Lake Titicaca to the north, and Lake Poopó to the south, which both are important for the nature as well as for the living conditions on the Altiplano. The two lakes are the remnants of large paleolakes. They are joined by the Desaguadero River. Lake Poopó
Long-term regulation of contractility and calcium current in smooth muscle
Longitudinal smooth muscle strips from guinea pig ileum were cultured in vitro for 5 days, and the relationship between extracellular Ca2+ and force in high-K+ medium was evaluated. In strips cultured with 10% fetal calf serum (FCS), this relationship was shifted to the right (50% effective concentration changed by 2-3 mM) compared with strips cultured without FCS. The shift was prevented by inclu
Screening for MODY mutations, GAD antibodies, and type 1 diabetes--associated HLA genotypes in women with gestational diabetes mellitus.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether genetic susceptibility to type 1 diabetes or maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) increases susceptibility to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We studied mutations in MODY1-4 genes, the presence of GAD antibodies, and HLA DQB1 risk genotypes in 66 Swedish women with GDM and a family history of diabetes. An oral glucose toler
