Balanced Truncation for a General Class of Discrete-Time Markov Jump Linear Systems
This paper develops a generalization of the balanced truncation algorithm applicable to discrete-time Markov jump linear systems. The approximation error, which is captured by means of the stochastic L2 gain, is bounded from above by twice the sum of singular numbers associated to the truncated states of each mode.

The effect of asset visibility on managing returnable transport items
Returnable transport items (RTI) have increasingly been introduced for environmental reasons and to achieve logistics benefits such as better protection of products, improving working environments, and enabling more efficient handling and cube utilisation. Even though RTI are often of high value, vulnerable to theft, and critical for production and distribution, they are often managed with limited

Blood Group O Does Not Increase the Risk of Inhibitors in Severe Haemophilia A : Data from the PedNet Study Group
INTRODUCTION: Inhibitor development against factor VIII (FVIII) is the most common complication of hemophilia A replacement therapy. One of the variables considered to influence inhibitor development is the ABO blood group. Patients with blood group O have, on average, a 30%-40% lower endogenous von Willebrand factor (VWF) concentration. It has been postulated that VWF levels influence inhibitor d

Neutrophil-derived matrix metalloproteinase-9 is a potent activator of trypsinogen in acinar cells in acute pancreatitis.
MMPs are generally considered to regulate degradation and remodeling of the ECM. Convincing data also implicate a role for MMPs in inflammatory conditions, such as AP, although the mechanisms are not known. The aim of this study was to define the role of MMPs in regulating activation of trypsinogen and tissue damage in AP, which was induced by infusion of taurocholate into the pancreatic duct in m
Phosphatidylethanol in blood (B-PEth): A marker for alcohol use and abuse.
Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) represents a group of glycerophospholipid homologues where ethanol by phospholipase D has been bound at the position that normally contains an amino-alcohol. Since the formation of PEth is specifically dependent on ethanol, the diagnostic specificity of PEth as an alcohol biomarker is theoretically 100%. The half-life of PEth in blood is approximately 4 days. The amount
Phenotype-Based Discovery of 2-[(E)-2-(Quinolin-2-yl)vinyl]phenol as a Novel Regulator of Ocular Angiogenesis.
Retinal angiogenesis is tightly regulated to meet oxygenation and nutritional requirements. In diseases such as proliferative diabetic retinopathy and neovascular age-related macular degeneration, uncontrolled angiogenesis can lead to blindness. Our goal is to better understand the molecular processes controlling retinal angiogenesis and discover novel drugs that inhibit retinal neovascularisation
High hyperdiploid childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
High hyperdiploidy (51-67 chromosomes) is the most common cytogenetic abnormality pattern in childhood B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), occurring in 25-30% of such cases. High hyperdiploid ALL is characterized cytogenetically by a nonrandom gain of chromosomes X, 4, 6, 10, 14, 17, 18, and 21 and clinically by a favorable prognosis. Despite the high frequency of this karyotypic
“Challenges to Legitimacy in Food Safety Governance? The Case of the European Food Safety Authority”
The ‘old’ forms of governance have been criticised for being neither sufficiently democratic nor effective. The popularity of ‘new’ modes of governance includes the embracing of values – integral to democratic processes – such as legitimacy, public accountability and trust. By relating parts of this ‘old-vs.-new’ distinction to March & Olsen’s dichotomy of aggregative vs. integrative politica

Approximate soft shadows on arbitrary surfaces using Penumbra wedges
Shadow generation has been subject to serious investigation in computer graphics, and many clever algorithms have been suggested. However, previous algorithms cannot render high quality soft shadows onto arbitrary, animated objects in real time. Pursuing this goal, we present a new soft shadow algorithm that extends the standard shadow volume algorithm by replacing each shadow quadrilateral with a
