Dynamic effects of institutions on firm-level exports

The gap between theoretically predicted trade patterns and actual trade suggests that our understanding of what shapes trade patterns is incomplete. Institutional barriers may be one factor behind this gap, and recent research suggests that institutions are a greater obstacle to trade than tariffs. Using detailed firm-level data, we analyze how institutional quality in recipient countries affects

Redirecting International Trade: Contracts, Conflicts and Institutions

The global financial crisis has contributed to the redirection of trade towards new markets outside the OECD area, where both demand patterns and the institutional environment differ from those in the OECD. This study provides an empirical examination of the consequences of this shift, based on Swedish firm-level trade data. Results suggest that weak institutions hamper trade and reduce the length

The text sheds light on the actions and on the role of the priest of the German Church in Malmö, Herbert Kühn (1898-1977), in the time from 1930-1946. The analysis proceeds in three steps. The first part shows how Kühn manages to provide a sustainable foundation for the young and insecure German parish and how he becomes the NSDAP's most important representative in Malmö. The second part traces ho

Capital Freedom, Financial Development and Provincial Economic Growth in China

For more than three decades, China has managed to combine rapid economic growth with a strictly regulated financial sector. The discrepancy between economic and financial development has raised the question of whether China might be an exception to the so‐called finance–growth nexus. This study examines the relationship between finance and growth at the provincial level in China using a new set of

Ontological Insecurity in the European Union

The European Union (EU) faces many crises and risks to its security and existence. While few of them threaten the lives of EU citizens, they all create a sense of anxiety and insecurity about the future for many ordinary Europeans. This comprehensive volume explores the concept of ‘ontological security’ which was introduced into international relations over a decade ago to better understand the ‘s

Introduction to 2018 special issue: Ontological (in)security in the European Union

The European Union (EU) faces many crises and risks to its security and existence. While few of them threaten the lives of EU citizens, they all create a sense of anxiety and insecurity about the future for many ordinary Europeans. Amongst these crises are the more obvious challenges of sovereign debt and fiscal austerity; refugees from conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria; and the rise of po

Gustav III, Enlightenment and Religion : Ecumenical visions and Catholicizing Strategies

As part of the “enlightened” reform activity, Gustav III issued a Tolerance Edict for “foreign believers” in 1781. This law allowed Catholic immigrants to publicly practice their religion. The members of the Reformed communities had already been granted the same rights, and in 1782 the ban on Jewish immigration was abolished. According to previous research, these edicts of toleration, in addition

Pushing the Online Boolean Matrix-vector Multiplication conjecture off-line and identifying its easy cases

Henzinger et al. posed the so-called Online Boolean Matrix-vector Multiplication (OMv) conjecture and showed that it implies tight hardness results for several basic dynamic or partially dynamic problems [STOC'15]. We first show that the OMv conjecture is implied by a simple off-line conjecture that we call the MvP conjecture. We then show that if the definition of the OMv conjecture is generalizeHenzinger et al. posed the so-called Online Boolean Matrix-vector Multiplication (OMv) conjecture and showed that it implies tight hardness results for several basic dynamic or partially dynamic problems [STOC'15]. The Polish Case : Pedophilia, Polak-Katolik, and Theology of the Nation

A reflection on contemporary Polish-Catholic identity. It starts with ponderings on how a gluing-together of national and religious identity is evident in discourses about the most pressing challenge of the Catholic Church in Poland today: the child abuse scandals. The revelation of these crimes is bound up with the premieres in 2018 and 2019 of the movies Clergy and Tell No One. The reactions gen

Composition Engineering in Two-Dimensional Pb-Sn-Alloyed Perovskites for Efficient and Stable Solar Cells

Environmentally friendly tin (Sn)-based metallic halide perovskites suffer from oxidation and morphological issues. Here, we demonstrate the composition engineering of Pb-Sn-alloyed two-dimensional (2D) Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites, (BA)2(MA)3Pb4-xSnxI13, for efficient and stable solar cell applications. Smooth thin films with high surface coverage are readily formed without using any additive ow

Universal generation of devil's staircases near Hopf bifurcations via modulated forcing of nonlinear systems

The discrete circle map is the archetypical example of a driven periodic system, showing a complex resonance structure under a change of the forcing frequency known as the devil's staircase. Adler's equation can be seen as the direct continuous equivalent of the circle map, describing locking effects in periodic systems with continuous forcing. This type of locking produces a single fundamental re
